Daniel Anderson - Head of Recruitment and Pathways

Dragon David

SGI NSW Cup
Role Focus: He is tasked with identifying talent and improving the club’s pathways and roster.

Background: Highly experienced coach, having led the Warriors and Eels to Grand Finals and winning Super League titles with St Helens.

Comeback: This role marks a major return to a senior role following a 2022 spinal injury that left him a quadriplegic.

Anderson's appointment is seen as a major move to bring elite recruitment structure to the Dragons, who have sought to improve their talent identification.

Congratulations Daniel for securing Keaon Koloamatangi, Scott Drinkwater, Phillip Sami and Luke Metcalf for the Dragons and it is hoped that you will be able to sign several more for 2027 to make the squad a much better all round team.

Not so enthusiastic about Sami but better than any of our present wingers.

I really like what DA has done. Honestly, he seemed to be doing nothing except sign Josh Kerr until Flanno left. I wonder if Flanno was working to prevent DA from doing his job properly. It just seems like the shackles have suddenly been released and he's completely reshaped the roster is weeks while he didn't seem to be doing much of anything for months before.

I don't think so. Sami, Drinkwater and KK were works in progress for quite some time while Flanagan was in charge so he was obviously part of that process. Metcalf is an impressive quick-draw reaction where he's taken advantage of a situation, great work. Why would Flanagan not have wanted DA to improve his roster that just sounds a bit silly.

Very easy answer to that question:

Because he feared it wouldn't be best for Kyle's continued selection.

No mate we're talking about the club trying to sign players in every position not just in the halves. And your idea that the Head Coach would be actively working against that.

First time I have seen the 'tiny terrier' on our reserves bench. Good call Deano. Betting he could do a better job than both Flanagan or Atkinson as he does have ball skills and game awareness. Been in fabulous form in Ressies from the back and jeeze he is so tuff for a little dude. He also has the respect of his players and visa versa..

Kerr signing was announced 6th August last year ... Anderson joined 28 July.
I mean it is possible that Kerr was signed by Anderson but equally possible it wasnt.

Tu was announced well after Anderson joined - Tu on a supplementary deal for 26 with promotion in 27 ... Anderson would have been across that but was still operating with what Flano would allow.

Got me thinking, is the general consensus on Baldy McGregor too harsh? Out of Price, Mary, Hook and Flanno it's:
  1. McGregor: Took a rabble, made them average then took them back to a rabble but had to deal with the JDB fiasco.
  2. Griffin: Took and rabble and improved them only a touch.
  3. Price: Took a good but sliding team and turned them into a rabble.
  4. Flanno: Took a rabble and turned them into an all-time basket-case.

Sami is an underrated signing imo. I was watching snippets of the Sharks game last weekend and struck by how important Ronaldo Mulitalo was for them. He’s obviously a very effective winger, but in addition to that he’s a bit of a force of nature out there – not just a yardage beast and huge attacking threat but a bit of an emotional leader for them with his energy out there. Reminded me of what we had with Lomax when he was at his best. I think Sami could feasibly do that for us, and, co-incidentally, he’s Mulitalo’s cousin!

Sami’s averaging over 200m every game btw, he's top 3 in the NRL for average run metres behind only Tedesco and Edwards, and he 100% should have been picked for Qld over his Titans teammate who got destroyed by Sharpe on the weekend

I like it. Yeh Mary perhaps judged too harshly. Bottom line is our choices for a head coach since Bennett have been abysmal. We are due a good one with the next.

Got me thinking..... I'm not saying the best (though not far off, IMO) but has JDB been the most influential Dragons player in...... I don't know how long but a long time?

Even when he, Hunt, Widdop, Frizell were at their best, the number of times they would lose when JDB was out must have been over 80%, maybe 90. Then he was out for 2 years and we know what happened and now this year.
