Dragons SG Ball:

First Half:
  • This sides moves so differently to HM.. more like a proper footy team in their sets.. its such a stark difference.. in any case we have been dominant early with some raider errors, a lot of players been good but Lorima Saukuru the #1 (also captain) has been the interesting one.. hes yet another lightweight fullback (we can find a lightweight fullback) but hes exciting too.. fast and loves to run.. went himself and almost scored.. came back across and set up the #3 Pappas for a try.. Pappas a solid unit also. 6-0 up.
  • Gardiner the #7 has been rly solid so far running the team around a sideline conversion (left footer), hes not tall but hes not a twig like so many of the young halves are, got a little bit of meat on the bones.. def one to keep an eye on.
  • Cornelius Pupualii the #3 is a massive strong dude.. esp if hes a year young.. lil recjless maybe with his passing but I dont mind him trying to stand out.. were winning literally every contact and penalty right now, so I dont wanna get too excited until posession evens up.
  • Rauna Te Pou Ryder-Kingi #9 another crazy name im never going to remember, been rly solid all game and found himself without any other options attacking their tryline and managed to step his way over and just get it down.. again everything going our way so far 12-0 up.
  • Mouhamad Ayache #20 been running strong.. this is an absolute smashing (so far), Saukuru almost scored the try of the season (ok so far) off a chip chase, but pulled up 1m short... damn.. would have been an epic highlight reel moment... that said there is a loose wild pass in him.. I can see he could be a coach killer too, but a heap of fun.
  • Saukuru went on to score after a drinks break, though it was more of a team try, couple of good runs from Cornelius and Mardini cut back in and puts him over. 18-0 up, loving having a goalkicker again!
  • Getting a bit carried away in the tail end of the half with penalties, #16 on report.. but the raiders are a rabble thankfully.. not rly sure why were taking the 2pts here when were dominating.. but 20-0 it is.
  • Disappointing end to the half, an error and let the raiders score a try right under the posts, 20-6 up. of ffs.. weve let em in on the following set again.. winger #Falaniko letting his man get outside him but should never have had them attacking us at all.. 20-10 Half Time... need an absolute reset at half-time, should never have let them back in.

Second Half:
  • Lot of back and forth we havent really settled and the raiders have scored again.. Gardiner held the play before up 1on1 was a great effort.. but they scored straight after.. 20-16 up.
  • We've had opportunities but were just a bit frantic.. and weve eventually let them in again... 20-20 with 20mins left.
  • I dont even know what to say, all these massive boys are great when they have the ball but getting burnt and making bad calls in defence.. Raiders now up 32-20.. jesus.. I dont think we come back from a loss like this in a short season.. positives from the first half of course but had so many chances to regain composure but speed and athleticism is too much for us.
  • And Pappas has put his shoulder of its socket.. far out.. kid looked alright, assume hes a local greek boy.
  • Couple of other mentions.. #17 Fililava is the size of a house.. not sure if he could make it but will keep an eye out and the other Ah Kee (Johannan) has rly bulked up something crazy since last year.. very big for a hooker now.. also will keep an eye out. Mardini the winger looks a lot more ready this year compared to last.
  • We did manage to score with 3 mins to go but rushed conversion on the absolute touchline just waived away.. 32-24, we were held up on fulltime but we werent gonna win anyway, gutted.
gotta catch up on the steelers game, that ambo delay has rly messed the timing.

it is really hard .. that first 20m was as good as any SG Ball i have seen. Then with the subs coming on it felt like they wanted to really stamp authority but instead of doing it via the hard play of the first 20 we went dumb niggle and gave away a bit of possession.

Then with the amount of ball the Raiders had they ran over us ... In terms of fitness they had it over us for sure ...

As mentioned the big moment for me was taking a kick at 18-0 up with all the momentum and them on a warning ... such a good chance there to score or draw another penalty and the resulting sin bin ... that would have really drained their energy. Instead they go bang-bang after our penalty, start to take some time out of the game and get their momentum back and they used it well.

Steelers HM (18-16 win):

First Half:
  • Had to watch this one sort of delayed due to previous game, Ollie Burton holds one up over the line to save the first try.
  • #8 Fangupo they compare his look to Tino, athletic prop with footwork.. huge flowing mullet lol... looks really dominant the way he stands up right and forward when he runs.. but 2 mistakes in the first 10minutes very uncool.
  • Nice backline movement.. Ollie jumping in and creating the space to put the winger Sager over in the corner.. 4-0.
  • Really physical stuff.. souths in particular are putting us on our a$$es over and over again.. but we still are in their end.. and we managed to score another right on the touchline.. Sager getting it back inside to his centre nicely for a try to Berghuis. 8-0.
  • Souths scored next with an easy try just fast men close to the tryline.. 8-6 Half Time.
Second Half:
  • Having to fast forward a bit to catch up.. watching Burton in defence is such a pleasure after seeing Sauruku.. floated back to make a critical 1on1 tackle.. then sprints back and does it again.. then sprints back again..
  • Jed Young #12 having the same blonde spiky haircut as Amone the #13 is outrageous, need to make them easier to tell apart. While i'm at it, #11 Young also cant be using Ollies headwear.. white headgear should only be for the mighty #1.
  • We nearly score but piggyback penalties and they go the length and score.. 1o1n against the little #7 in Fitzgerald is too easy, were gonna have to do something about our goalline defence, cant be letting tries in so easily. 8-12.
  • Off the kickoff the #15 Farquhar has probably got trapped between his teammates and storming forward run.. his shoulder is out or broken..
  • I think Fitzgerald has been axed and Chapman is now the 7.
  • Finally were in again.. little left hand movement with the winger Efaraimo just getting it down.. were not making burtons life easy with goalkicking.. 3-2 tries up but every try has been on the last millimetre of grass.. Burton kicks it though from the opposite side to the last 2, brilliant 14-12 back in front.
  • Been 2 blokes taken off the ball, one on fitzgerald earlier which was a sinbin for sure if they had a review.. not even penalised, but this one was Amone the #13 and sent for 10 this time, pr1cks. Amone off with concussion though... which could be him gone for 3 weeks at this age.. we did go on to score in the set also so thats a positive, Chapman @7 just putting his 2nd rower Ruiz over easy as. Missed the conversion though bugger, 18-12 up.
  • Sadness.. let an easy backline movement put the winger in basically untouched.. on the sidelines atleast, kick missed, still 18-16 in front. 6mins to go. I think we have 2-3 injuries also..
  • 3mins to go and Souths did a really cheeky play down the short side.. like rly cheeky and he was away too but Sager chased and pulled him into touch in desperation.. had a great game Sager.
  • seconds to go and we've given away the penalty goal-kick to lock it up fark.. 40m out..... hes missed it.. distance too much for him.. thank f*** something gone our way today.

The young guys miss 2 full games iirc for concussions, so hopefully that doesnt apply here but definitely a concern.. just thankful we got 2pts.

Not sure if Fitzgerald was injured or axed (he also got poleaxed a full second after releasing the ball), and his defence wasnt good.. they have to sort that out, make them earn their tries.

Yeah the performance from the whole team was underwhelming today but they get a bit of leeway considering it’s the first ‘proper’ game of the season

Think I’ve taken for granted that trio of middle forwards + Creighton Meafou from last seasons Steelers Matt’s. They really did provide a great platform for the attack and dominated most games

Side note - He’s a very well known talent but Payton Tarau for Souths was probably MOTM. Impressed me loads today with kicking,ballplaying and running game

Don’t want to be negative but Souths SG ball side looks the goods. Strike all over and a good forward pack

Think it’s a bit of a reset year for Steelers SG ball before the good players from Matt’s progress

I think thats the piece missing, not a lot of elite forwards in the HM squad, that said Amone is rly decent which is why its really bad if were gonna miss him for 25% of the remaining competition (lets hope), and I rly hope Fangupo with his epic mullet turns into an absolute tear-away.. cant rly tell from today.. physically looks elite but there is much more to it than that.. and needs to cut the errors out.. also not sure how old he is.

Dont think I can take another loss today... 4 games in a day is too much.. still got the actual 1st grade trial also.

Edit: oh f***, Zane Timmins done his hamstring this week apparently.. great.. one of our best last year in his 2nd year would have been dominant.
