Junior Reps 2026

Results of the Junior Rep teams for both the Steelers and Dragons were not good were they? A lot of improvement needed by the looks of things.

That's the simple view.
The opposing teams are most likely top 4 teams minimum.
Dragons Matts was a good unexpected win.
Dragons Ball was a bad loss but expected.
Steelers Ball was a great effort v competition favourites 8 nil down at half and lost 9-8
Steelers Matt was the only disappointing result.

Clubs that stick to only developing kids from their local league have been left behind

It’s not 1995 anymore, times have changed. Our SG ball side that won the comp in ‘24 the best players were from Penrith/QLD and the best player in St George SG ball is also from Penrith

The most successful products from Steelers SG ball the last 2-3 years are Savelio Tamale (Manly) and LKT (Dalby QLD)

The reason Melbourne/roosters have been so good is they were forced to behave different to other clubs with large junior bases and they have become the best in the league at junior pathways recruitment

I am crying out for us to be among the best in that regard. If you are consistently good at that level you will produce NRL players regularly and not have to rely on big money signings like KK to succeed

Definitely not enjoying my junior footy games as much as 2024 and 2025 where we had a rly strong SG Ball side in 1 of the clubs.. and missing Ah Kee one of my faves... the Steelers HM is probably the best overall package.. but maybe missing some forwards or havent gelled.. its so hard cause u have kids playing young and so ur strong in some positions and not quite ready in others..

Steelers SG I thought did enough to win that game also.. they have a good pack.. its a shame about McLaren, and I didnt enjoy us coming up against Carter Mareko either.. he was really the difference.. not to throw shade on our 7 Butler who pretty good himself.

And Melbourne and Easts SG Ball sides are made up of players who are not from their junior leagues. So much for having junior leagues.
Lol too funny, when the StGeorge Dragons announced the original HM squad of 36 players, 11 were actual internal juniors the rest were external, and when they culled 6 players, i think 4 or 5 were Internal, the SGBall squad that was originally announced only had 2 StGeorge Dragons juniors and 1 Illawarra junior (Phoenix Johns) not sure how many got culled but either way 3 juniors out of 30 or 36 players..

I agree with everything you wrote, but my comment was in regards to so many other posters saying that Illawarra supply the juniors and our Illawarra juniors is supposed to be our strength and we should be like Penrith etc. While I say, recruitment is the most important factor, whether it be juniors or players already playing first grade. I say we should be more like Easts and Melbourne.

Yeah, I know most of the "St George" junior teams are now made up of players not from the St George junior league. That is what we should have been doing a long time ago. With Illawarra, we also have 2 junior teams in each league. That in itself should mean we have more better juniors coming through our system. But Easts and Melbourne often have great junior teams, with no junior leagues. I have been saying for many years, juniors don't win NRL premierships, good recruitment does. It would be good to see St George vs Illawarra in junior league grand finals.
