Kyle Flanagan & the coach

It's a shame. I continue to believe Flanno could have been good. He's put together a very good pack. A pack which has arguably taken it to the 4 teams so far this year. Then with KK next year, it'll be very formidable.

Just this thing with Kyle and recruitment of backs! Already had a big, slow backline so he goes ahead and recruits CT and Gutho. I rate them both but they are clearly not what this team needs for a fullback and winger.
Next season we will have a pack injury free that will match any other. The biggest hurdle is still the 7 but if Reed keeps on developing as we all hope, that will allow Atkinson to go back to his more natural 6.

9 will be the combination of Cook/Liddle. So I believe we have a competitive 6 to 13 in 2027.

We need to recruit speed into our backline. Especially 1, 2 and 5. I am also concerned about our 3 and 4. That would be our next progression.

has he though ...

The only forward that has come to the club without a prior connection here is Guler
KK of course coming next year

Did Flano assemble or benefit from others?
Well yeah, but all except Lawrie have been extended under Flanno's watch. So I think we can say Flanno assembled the pack though with a lot of help.

I don't think he's left us, well he hasn't left us yet, in bad shape with the salary cap either. Those on overs are all gone at the end of this year or next. Should be plenty of money to extend the Couchmans.

He's probably on the low end of contract and it depends if we have a termination clause, Manly’s payout to Seibold is 300k.

Are we in a financial position to pay him out no matter the price, Yes.

One thing Webb did well was finance, the club has been millions in profits each year for a while now.
Anyone you think could do a good job as a head coach mug?

There’s got to be an assistant coach that’s worth a shot somewhere if not Brad Arthur

Haven't overly thought about.
It's a big job with a lot of damaged playing group.

Michael Cheika in a mentor type coaching role with say someone like John Morris, Peter Wallace.

Cheika is very much a Bennett coach mentor who gets the best out of players, which has been a big issue for a long time at the club.

Kerr for example mud at Dragons, origin squad at Dolphins, mud at Dragons.

If we had someone on staff that could improve each player by 10% we win 50% of our games.

Isn't he with the Roosters at the moment?

Get Dean Young as a caretaker.
There is an upside to Dean Young as caretaker. If we continue to have the crap year we look like having, it basically rules him out of the big gig. If on the other hand he turns things around, he'd be odds on to get the job - and rightly so.
Don't think he'll do that!
I loved Deano as a player and he's Dragons through and through, but he's presently our defensive coach and results suggest he's not very good at it.
What, if anything, has HE PERSONALLY done about Sloan and LKT'S defence?

Seems LKTs defence has improved significantly in the very limited chances he's had this year. Was good in reserve grade.

Sounds like just what is needed. There should be lots of assistants with good technical knowledge who played under coaches with good technical knowledge and who were or are assistants to coaches with good technical knowledge.
I’m talking full time coaches. I already said Willie Talau interim if he’s keen
WT is a solid choice but he hasn't even been an assistant to a head coach yet. Is it a bit like throwing Reed into first grade right now?
Left field one: John Morris
Peter Wallace is the best pick of the bunch imo but not sure how long he’s been an assistant for
John Morris and Peter Wallace would be good but I know Wallace is and isn't John Morris an assistant somewhere already? He is not going to quit his current job to be caretaker coach of the Dragons for a few months.

So I'll stick to my opinion, if it isn't going to be Dean Young, it has to be someone like Hasler or even Seibold. I don't like any of those opinions but unless you are going to pick Willie Talau out of reserve grade, which would be seen as an insult by Dean Young, I can't see any other options.

Thanks Mug. Knowing this club, we will probably look at a couple of old boys in Dean Young and Ben Hornby as long term coaches. Personally I wouldn't go with either, especially Young who has been a part of the current shit show for too long. Mug, do you have thoughts about Young and Hornby as potential Head Coach targets?

Ben Hornby seems to do okay. But I hope they don't get an old boy.

True that. Will be looking for a caretaker head coach and caretaker assistant coach. Presuming Ennis isn't interested because it would mean he has to quit his job at Fox which he seems to really like. And was he only hired due to his friendship with Flanno? Deano cops it a bit but Ennis is the attacking coach and the attack has been woeful. Worse than the defence.

Name is Ben. Currently assistant to his brother at Dolphins. Before that was assistant (Defensive) to Griffin at Dragons and, after Flanno arrived, he was Dragons NSW Cup coach in 24.

What about the Dolphins coach brother Kristian? I think he was tauted a few years back as being a decent coach, but went back to the UK to coach Super League team?
He would have to be a desperate signing in my opinion.

Wow, we have certainly come to that ugly part that we have had many times in the past decade in a big, big way. Flanno not wanted now by most. I've even convinced a buddy of mine who I've known for over 52 years and is a mad Dragons supporter, and he now agrees, that the club has not been in a good place even with Flanno at the helm.

Years and years of frustration, that many of us have been patiently and hoping for better outcomes, is again with us. I was pinning a lot of hope that Flanno would be the answer when he agreed to coach the players at the Dragons after the Board sacked Griffin (I bet Hook hasn't stopped laughing for the past 2 and a bit years). I can visualise his gleeful face that the fans are turning on Flanno just as he was.

Whether or not it will be this year or sometime next year, Flanno will be gone if this current losing trend continues. In my opinion, the Board should be making a decision based on would Flanno as head coach bring us sustained success for many years to come or will it be almost making the top 8 or ending up 8th and then the following year drop back to the bottom 4. They must want someone who can deliver yearly best results - consistent wins and ending up always in the top 8. That should be their ultimate goal for success. Is there one person who can deliver us with wins consistently? Bloody hard now.
