NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

I thought Loko had a pretty good game. He is very mobile for such a big unit and was often the first defender into tackles. I believe Latu on the other hand needs another year in seconds before he could be considered for first grade. He made a couple of strong runs. However, he was generally the second or third tackler in defence and seems to go quiet for several sets before he takes the ball up for repeat runs.

The metres were maybe 50% less than last week, I think its because we were simply outplayed all game.. but to look at the main props numbers:
  • Latu played 54mins: 10 Runs for 109m (41 PC) - 32 tackles - 2 missed
  • LPT played 51mins: 7 Runs for 78m (31 PC) - 39 Tackles - 1missed - 1 ineffective
  • Liu played 57mins: 7 Runs for 70m (33 PC) - 32 Tackles - 4 Missed - 1 ineffective
  • MMolo played 54mins: 15 Runs for 132m (48 PC) - 34 tackles - 0 missed
Latu seems to always have the best carries, 10.9m per carry and more work than his young comrades, Micky Molo is just a professional in that grade.. i dont think hes made for first grade.. but hes always solid in cup.. 8.8m per run which is the lowest of the 4 props by a fair bit.. but no missed tackles and nearly double the number of runs compared with most of em.

I know they lost but I'm still bullish on the young NSW Cup team. NZ's first try came about when LKT thought he had been tackled but actually had broken the tackle. Got up and played the ball and was penalised. Was probably the right call. The defender had let go on LKTs ankle. This kind of thing happens and no one is to blame.

Their third try came about as a result of I think Liu's offload was fallen on by a Dragons player, ref didn't know what had happened so just ruled a knock on. Comes down to poor refereeing. Dragons young team was chasing due to things largely beyond their control.

A few observations:
  • Couldn't Ramsey goal kick a bit before his illness? Because Glover is a poor goal kicker.
  • The younger Rumble might make it into the NRL but very much doubt Ben will.
  • Ramsey's lack of bulk came back to haunt him. He puts everything into the collision but it's not enough right now.
  • Glover made a few mistakes and his passes found the ground a few times.
  • Who was that replacement hooker? His passes also found the ground a few times and a few times had Glover or LKT reaching behind, jumping up or catching passes around their ankles. Anyone remember Mitch Rein?
  • Mike Molo isn't getting in the NRL anytime soon due to the form of the young forwards but I've long thought he is better than his older brother. Nothing I saw yesterday has changed my opinion on that.

Everyone is asking about Glovers goalkicking, but until we bring in fresh blood, whether its Reed or another, Glover is the best we have.. and yes we lose numerous games off the back of it.. but when Ramsey has taken over in the past, he sprays the ball anywhere in a 90 degree arc, I assure you Glover is way better.. but he struggles with kicking it over the crossbar when hes out wide, and his accuracy is average.. but he has the odd good week like last week where he got lots in similar position on the left and he dialled in a bit.

But my armchair view in general is recruiting genuine goalkickers is the first priority in every grade.. 2pts is 50% of a try, and it pi$$es me off that a conversion is worth that much.. but it is.. and most games are won/lost off the back of the dude kicking goals.. over all the other brilliant runners, passers, forwards.. the kicker gets 50% of a try every time he kicks..

I think Latu can handle 1st grade now, something like 10-15minutes before half time and again the same amount after, he was good yesterday, just that last 5 minutes was a bit poor, especially the last try conceded , where he was standing tall at marker on the line and had eyes for the runner not the dummy half.
I look at the lower grades slightly different to most, i want the team to win, but especially Matts, SGBall, JF i look at how players are developing and progressing as they go up in grade, realistically only a couple will go all the way, the rest won't make it, so if Player A has a good game and the team loses, so be it, also understand the teams has to be somewhat competitive to allow players to develop, like a half is able to steer the team around, get to good kicks but he would rely on forwards doing their job as well.
Anyway have a great Easter for those that celebrate for those that dont enjoy the day..

This is my position exactly in regard to junior teams. I wish they could win every game but recruiting and preparing some of them for first grade is much more important. Better to have a very bad team with 2 or 3 very good players than a very good team without anyone really standing out.

Ressie ref caned us in the penalties. Even one inexplicable one on LKT for playing the ball too quickly.

Going on the number of hospital passes thrown by Glover I figured I was again watching the nameless one. Also sack him as goal kicker Talau. Ramsay has a decent boot on him give him a crack.

The nameless one who was an immortal when it came to hospital passes.

Was watching Latu, who played well, but his last 5 or so minutes, Dropped ball, missed tackle resulted in a try, then right at the end at marker on the tryline he is standing tall invitation for dummy half to burrow right under him and score, should have been crouching..
Which is probably why Flanno hasn’t used him yet ?

I think we will get an answer on contract this week.. if hes staying def bring him in for Lawrie (with Guler for Stewart).

If hes leaving though.. im on the fence.. dont rly care, but wont be much fun blooding him for another club.

Yes, it really is no point in playing him in NRL in preference to others if he is not going to stay. I just have my fingers crossed that he will stay.

Lawrie has out performed Guler. I don't like either anymore tbh but Lawrie has nailed his bench role the last 2 weeks while Guler was poor in all his games. Latu for Stewart would be good as we blood another youngster but I think Flanno will go for the experience of Guler, especially since it's a big hyped game.

  • Bit of a hiccup last week but they had some things go against them. But have to be able to defend those bits of bad luck or bad referring.
  • Good to see Halangahu back in NSW Cup.
  • Honestly, would prefer #18 be coming back from injury at another club. Does anyone still think he's going to bother the NRL team?
  • Is #13 leaving or what? This contract thing has been dragging on for a while.
  • I guess Buchanan is going to come back into #4.
  • Several big names from SG Ball making thier way into this team. And god know they are needed.
  • Are Cyrus Stanley-Traill and Jarrah Gaia Treweek unavailable or is one of the two pencilled in to be the missing #14 in NSW Cup?
  • If for one reason or another Allan was unavailable for NSW Cup, would be interesting to see Heidke selected and be in a shootout with Buchanan.
  • #2 was the least of NSW Cup teams problems last week but maybe needs a few more kgs of muscle on his frame before he's really good at the next level.
