NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

I know its still early but if things fall into place and injuries don't affect our playing group the two standout teams are the Warriors and us.

Today showed that this season we have depth and thats exactly what is required when coaching ressies because of the demotion and promotion of players and giving our younger players a taste of football against the men.

I said last week and I will repeat myself, I am very impressed by this ressies coach.

NSW Cup Notes (38-6 Win):
  • Jack Cole missing for Penrith which is great, but were missing plenty also
  • After forcing an error a nice backline movement with a cut-out from Ilias to put SFinau thru in the corner.. lots of speed to get it done.. could do with some of that finishing in 1sts!
  • Competitive grind for a while before we finally get to attack.. Ilias to Glover this time with a nice ball to Heidke running a great line for his first of many tries I imagine.. love this kid.
  • Another attacking raid and this time Muhleissen fakes one way and passes the other to put Treweek over for his 1st try at this level, playing right which is not his natural side.. so ironic given we normally have a logjam for right 2nd row.. but Nick is up a grade and Jacob is in origin camp..
  • Can see that a 1st grade halves spot is up for grabs, both Glover & Ilias are being very adventurous today, 14-0 up at half time.. very dominant.
  • 4mins into 2nd half, Ilias > Glover > Ramsey > Heidke in for his 2nd, I had to rewatch this a few times I couldn't even see the pass from Ramsey it was magic, but against its Heidke running the perfect line outside him.. the kid just dissects defensive lines.
  • 10mins left in the game and guess who runs an incredible line to dissect the defence again.. draws the fullback and Heidke puts Ilias away under the posts.. 26-6.
  • And a nice backline movement with a speedy ramsey offloading to finau to fly over in the corner.. really clinical performance today with plenty of players out....
  • Ok I thought we were done.. but 1 more on fulltime, Ilias Glover Ramsey interchange with an offload to Glover to go under to finish the game 38-6 Final..
The thing out of today once again for me, is get Heidke the hell into 1st grade, either the 30th spot or pay someone out.... even if its on the wing.. hes our bostock only more centre than wing.. but he will handle both.

Not a knock on Buchanan because he’s very talented as well but Charlie had a better game today in his cup debut than any game Buchanan has had at that level

Im putting it down to the Mongrel/Intensity/Strength of Charlie, even his defence was top class
the kid has got it.. lock him up.. its probably good for us that hes not on display in origin next week.

the thing is he could literally play right ctr in first grade right now and move NickT into the 2nd row.. we just dont think like that though..

Jersey Flegg Notes (30-38 Loss):
  • Missing a bunch of kids to U19 Origin and Heidke up to NSW Cup.. very vulnerable.
  • Penrith kick off the game with a short-dropout that goes 20m and catch it unopposed.. and score first set, thats not a good omen, I thought there was a gentleman's agreement to kick long early in a game...
  • We didnt even touch the ball for 8 minutes, Panthers are really on today.. this is brutal, long periods of scrambling to defend against a side that is big and fast today... feel like this defence will hurt us later.. 0-16 after 22 minutes.
  • Despite the penrith dominance.. we have bombed 2 tries with forwards crashing over the line, 2nd one i dont even know how its possible I think he got it down but judged to have fumbled it.. potential game changers but instead we hand the ball back for more pressure =(
  • 30mins in and finally we get down their end and Reed puts his 2nd rower away! 6-22.
  • Next set and our props cart us up big and strong.. 5th tackle Reed chips and regathers and puts Lyric away under the posts.. holy lol.. the Reed show again... 12-22.
  • Game in the 2nd half was up for grabs, but we kept giving away penalties or errors at the wrong time, and Penrith r too good to keep doing that too.. when they get close to ur line, they throw speed and size and its very hard to hold em out.
  • Reed puts on his 3rd.. short aerial kick into the in-goal for Hammoud to score on his return to footy after a long lay off... 18-28, 30mins to go.
  • More penalties just keep gifting panthers out of trouble.. dud call also.. eventually we get the ball back and Reed puts another short aerial kick up for Lyric to take the mark and score.. 24-34, 14mins left.
  • Rubie has been going off (prop who nearly played nsw cup this week), another attacking raid, reed sends it left to Hammoud with quick hands and TPH a really quick bat on that goes behind Borg (playing ctr), but a catch and pass and Saifiti cuts back in to score out wide.. was a good finish.. despite all the penalties against us were still in it 30-34, 9mins to go, Reed has kicked every goal so far.
  • Had our chances to ice it late but penrith defended well and we werent good enough.. penrith went the length to score with 2mins left.. great game in the end, one we prob should have won even with our players out.. 30-38 final score.
Did Hammoud start? How did he go? Think he'll be able to take the next few steps into the NRL?

Just off the bench, not even sure what position he was playing tbh, has to take over from TPH I feel soon though.. hes just bigger and more likely, even though TPH had some nice moments today. Had a long time out though, so dont think anyone was expecting too much.

Boys did well to come back after poor start and so many out.
Reed standout again, Shadi really sparked them when he came on, big talker.
Borg had a good game looks like he has added some size too.

Drew Langdon had another shocker and after being dropped a few weeks back, doubt we see him again.

Plus side next week Shadi at 6 Pek to 1
Plus Heidke, Afu, Williams, Stanley-Traill, Treweek, Hjaltason and Hutchinson back

Great game from Cup boys from the kick off till full time.
Charlie exceeding expectations, class written all over him.
Thought Jarrah played better than he has been in Cup
Hutcho didn't look out of place too.
7 game streak and have Jake, Nick and Hayden to come back next week maybe Allan or Sloan too.

Hutchinson as well. Stepped up easily.
I don't often engage in self-praise but I've been raving about this bloke for a while. Thought he was flying under the radar below LPT, Latu and etc but might turn out to be just as good or better. I still think that. Seems to have it all for a prop, doesn't he? Leg speed, can find a pass and offload, stamina, good defender. If the club can get rid of Lawrie, Gular, Sele, I'll be backing Hutchinson in for a top 30 spot next year. Or at least a development contract.

Terrific summary Rev.

Yep Finau our best finisher. Today and last week he used a kinda in and away with his shoulder to avoid the tackler then crossed untouched both times. Never seen it before tho probably is done by all the best finishers..

Agree Charlie Heidke looks a special talent. A strong defender too. Yes fast track this kid. Where is he from, local jr or outsider?

Big chance to play semi finals football with this group of players and this coach

Big chance? This team is almost certain to play semis. Just a question of winning the minor premiership or not.
2 losses this season, 1 against the best team in the competition the Warriors, and we were handed a footballing lesson that day and the 2nd believe it or not against the team running last, South Sydney.

I'm always cautious when it comes to declaring semi finals football with our club, its top 5 only but im more confident now after yesterday win with those youngsters stepping up.

The results certainly back up your assessment of the coach Jodragon 40. I haven't seen many of the seconds' games, but the coaching staff appear to handle the weekly changes in available players without too much disruption.
