fed inedible food
You guys wanna know what they fed us at the boarding school, porridge so thick and lumpy you stood your spoon in it, a staple yr round dessert was warm stale bread and milk with nutmeg, a vile soup we called dishwater because it was tasteless, with the only protein in it being weevils, dead set. We were allowed an egg once a week otherwise toast only. No fruit juice. Our only decent meal for the entire year was a roast at Easter. While we kids ate this slop and rationed food, the house masters dined like lords of the manor.

Wow that just sounds horrible. Bordering on outright cruelty.

So many kids have been mistreated in Boarding Schools. Conditions in those days when you were just a little kid RVH would have been tough. To me kids who have been sent to Boarding Schools is a cop out by parents who don't want to spend their time to look after their kids and is bloody selfish and of course lax in giving their love and bonding that is needed by the kids as they grow up.

Mate spot on. Conditions were very tuff as after two yrs I was alone when my big brother went up to senior school some 5km away. Other than visiting days the only other time I saw my brother was the monthly movie nite. But we were seated well away from each other. Up till that yr I've never known such loneliness. David please call me Ritchie here.

Oh yes Illusion! Chiko Rolls are still made did you know? I had one with chips for lunch yesterday. Been ages since I had a Triple Treat because Streets deleted it. There was a petition lodged in '21 to bring back the iconic ice cream. It failed.

Eaten at the footy too.
Yes, these goodies were special. Those Triple Treats were really great treats. You could not beat the choc cover over the strawberry ice cream with the marshmallow. Yummo! I wonder why they decided not to bring them back even after the petition? Lots of people would go bananas if they were being sold today in my opinion. In any case, I prefer the Marathon brand spring rolls from the take away nowadays instead of the Chico rolls.

What was your first movie theatre guys. Mine was the old Engadine Plaza, long gone I'd say. I recall a couple of us kids would sneak thru a loose piece of boarding at the side of the building and get in for free. That is until the manager sprung us and threatened to "tell the police or your father, take your pick". I chose my father and he gave me a couple of whacks across my bum with his belt. The very first time my dad had used violence on me. I learned the lesson.

Funny David, your not the first person to tell me that. I like both but Chiko has my top vote due to the sodium in the spring roll being overly hi.

Yummo for sure; Our Streets made so many great ice creams.

What do you mean? You said you were a Ten Pound Pom.
Wonderful story. Dad was 16 when the Germans came knocking on his home country Poland in 1939. He and his older brother escaped by foot eventually ended up in England.

Joined the British Army Polish Corps in 1941 at 18. Was a tanker in USA made Sherman tanks where he faught Rommel in both the African and Sicily campaigns. His tank had a lower shooting range and was hit on 2 occasions but survived.

My mum was Italian and escaped Mussolini's rule also fled to England. She was a nurse. They met after the war. Had 4 children and in 1969 emigrated to Australia as £10 poms from Bradford, Yorkshire.

So we were brought up mainly in the Italian culture as Roman Catholics who didn't have 2c to scratch together. I still thank my parents for their sacrifices in my prayers.

I recall the Plaza showed a mixture of serials, cartoons and the feature. Being cliffhangers the serials were so annoying as you had to wait till the next time to find out what transpired and some times you did not have sufficient pocket money so missed the next episode which may have been the ending.
