Recruitment and Retention for 2026

Paying out or front loading contracts isn't as easy as just saying it.
Players have to agree to it.

Take Vili Fifita why would he take a payout if he doesn't have another contract. He stays at the club, monthly wage, uses the training and medical staff and plays weekly footy.
Even Tom could still want access to medical staff and monthly wage.

Extra salary cap is usually spread over a dozen players and even then a lot don't like it
You can't bulk pay a player like Lawrie.
Say he is on 480k we give him 240 front load and then next year he gets 20k a month instead of 40k. He's not agreeing to that
Plus you could end up with a Molo situation where Lawrie leave early and we have to get 200k back off him
So as a rule it would only work if a player has another club to go to? I doubt Lawrie or Fifita will get picked up by another club in the NRL and Eisenhuth will retire.

Crown Sports International, 9 players
  • Damien Cook (Rich List, $700,000)
  • Luciano Leiua (Rich List, $900,000)
  • Moses Suli
  • Jacob Halangahu
  • Ben Murdoch-Masila
  • Viliami Fifita
  • Finau Latu
  • Sione Finau
  • Cyrus-Stanley Traill
Mario Tartak’s Crown Sports has a strong foothold at the club with the likes of Damien Cook, Moses Suli, Sione Finau and Ben Murdoch-Masila on the firm’s books. They also have rising stars Jacob Halangahu and Canterbury-bound Finau Latu. David Riolo negotiated the loan deal for winger Mikaele Ravalawa, who is at South Sydney this season but due to return to the Dragons next year. Riolo’s Titan Sports Management has a steady list of players, including Blake Lawrie, Dylan Egan, Hamish Stewart. Steve Gillis has always been a favourite of the club and he has a steady list of players; Jack de Belin, Mat Feagai, Toby and Ryan Couchman.

Luciano is on 900K a year? Unbelievable! One of the most overpaid players in the competition.

Hard-working Dragons forward Tom Eisenhuth is set to retire from rugby league, effective immediately.

The 32-year-old played every game for the Dragons last season and was among the club's most consistent players in a disappointing year.

But this year, a series of injuries, including a concussion in the trials, have made it difficult for the former Junior Kangaroos forward and he is expected to formally announce his decision to hang up the boots in the next 24 hours.

He is held in high regard within the Dragons ranks and is hopeful of getting a coaching or junior development role at the club

I wish him well in what he does from now. Hopefully make a full recovery from his health issues.

Unfortunately could see it coming after that nasty knock in ressies. Obviously a shitty situation to be in but glad he and the club are prioritising his health and hope he recovers well from it all.

Tapau seems like the only first grader available who would be open to a 6mth contract, unless we have someone higher up the food chain who is agitating.

We obviously need to improve the 2026 roster, but we are in some strife atm with our 2025 props.

I think we aim for higher, with that David Riccio article saying we have $$$, i think we have thrown the line out to see what we can hook, with Tapau, he would be on the bottom of the list, if we cant get anyone of note, we offer Tapau contract for the rest of the year, if SF wants to go down that track..

I so agree in principle.. we keep settling and it keeps creating problems down the track... though we could in theory buy both now that Tom is retiring.. but maybe he wants a spot for Lawson too..

Either way only a month to go if were gonna get a deal done.. could end up with none of em..

My take is hes been better defensively than his last couple of games in 1st grade (which you would expect anyway), but has still been out shined by Glover in attack for the most part. His support play has netted him some tries and his kicking has been ok, but wouldnt say hes getting re-called anytime soon until he's got his confidence up or something forces a change.
