Recruitment and Retention for 2026

Glad we didn't re-sign JDB, he looks soo slow now. I'm leaning towards not re-signing Klemmer for that reason too. Need mobility in the modern game, we ran with slow players across the park this season & our defence was problematic as a result.

It's all well to say our defensive system is bad and/or coaches have been bad but you can't realistically expect someone like Klemmer, JDB, Guler etc to lead line speed or have the mobility to stop more agile fwds. That's based in fantasy & not reality.

IF you want better line speed & defence then you need to pick players who have good mobility & capable of consistent high quality repeat efforts. It's pretty basic saying our defence is bad but not addressing the core reason. That's my concern on Halangahu, can he handle the mobility required at 2rf in defence? tbh he was beaten for speed on a few occasions against the panthers.

It's like driving a ford laser & expecting it to perform as a ferrari, it's literally not capable of doing it even if prime schumacher is driving the car.

So we are dropping LKT to make way for Anderson? Who is gonna be the halfback?

Didn't Tim Watsford say in the podcast that his top priority is to sign an elite halfback? I suspect Luke Metcalf may be his target, although he is not available until 2027. If the target is Metcalf or another player in 2027, our half for 2026 is likely to be young Flanno, LKT or Ilias.

LKT has to work on his defence but no way I'd be dropping him or having him play halfback.

I think Anderson will do well with Saints if he is paired with an organising half. Although he didn't do a lot of running last night, I feel his strengths may be getting the backline moving and running set plays.
Atkinson will be interesting for next year. He doesn't have great speed but he is a good reader of the game and can back up and defend plus has a good kicking game. Anderson needs to get us some props and a marquee of any sort for next year.

Great analogies Dave03 and good points you raised. Yes. JDB has slowed down noticeably and I am thinking the same that the recruitment/retention staff have made the right decision about him. But the big thing you mentioned was the need to get players with great mobility. With them we would certainly improve our defence.

Lets cut to the chase Dave, so what we are saying is we are relying heavily on our juniors to fill the mobile forward void for next year. Thats fine, but both JH and LPT will have to have big pre seasons, they both struggled in defense against the panthers, throw in LKT to get his defense right and we maybe a show, I think we can all forget about getting that Alpha prop, pretty sure Klemmer is going to be the one.

Again, it could be a case of chasing our tails Justa. We continued that going in circles and not really getting anywhere syndrome this year and like the past 10 or more years. If things don't come good and we stay in that rut for next year with the juniors not really reaching the heights that we have placed on them, something drastic has to happen and we will be disappointed yet again.

I don't have the answers. All I know is that our squad just doesn't match the better clubs squads. I reckon if we played today against the Dolphins and the Eels, we lose big time with the players we ended up with at the tail end of the comp.

Yep agree we do have a lot of 'mobile forwards' most of them 20-22yrs of age, but they still need atleast 1 big dawg to lead them around.. I know Klemmer isnt gods gift at his age, but if we are arent going to sign any more props for 2026.. then 1 more year for Klem.. so be it... again 'manage his minutes' that has been his problem end of season, he did huge minutes in that warriors game and i think 1 or 2 others around that period...

I dont envy Flanno/Andos decision because Klem has to make a call if he wants to take up the Manly offer.. so if we want him we need to sort it asap.. we cant wait till Nov 1 or to see what shakes out in months to come..... maybe we have someone else in mind.. NAS is the one that keeps getting raised, then maybe we dont need Klem.. but the fact we didnt announce his departure means its still in the air.

On top of Klem/whoever... we also may just run with 29 players again like we did this year basically.. keeping 1 slot open to go after an out of the blue released prop (or other), would have to be a good one though..... but I highly doubt there will be another Terrel May or Frank Molo for example come on to the 2026 market.

There would be no question Dave that we would be smoked by either of those 2 teams. I am always worried about blooding juniors into teams that are struggling and expecting them to be the Saviour. Have a look at the good teams their juniors come in and its seamless. Please tell me what ours would have learnt over the last few weeks getting thumped by 40 pts each game. Sure they will need to improve their defense, and how many years in a row have we been waiting for that to happen. ? We needed to be further up the ladder to at least attract some good prospects, we're not, as a matter of fact we are worse than last year. I would be imagining that DA would know that recruiting for the Dragons is not an easy task.

Thats the thing Rev, no one knows what the Dragons are up to, good thing or bad thing ? I imagine that DA with what he had available to him at the Roosters didn't have to pull too many strings to get players there, we of course are a different story, lets hope he can weave his magic.
