Recruitment and Retention for 2026

I honestly don't know but aren't we all over-reacting a bit? Broncos have given him permission to sign elsewhere. They don't want him. I know they recruited Pezet and I know he's better than any of our halfback a for a number of years but I still didn't think he was that good. Wishart who is about the same age has been the preferred option when one of Melbourne's halves were unavailable.
I’m certain Brisbane would’ve much preferred keeping him. He’s been the highest touted half in quite some time. Wishart is about to turn 26 in a few days. Pezet is 22.

Wishart has become one of the most overrated players in the comp, great #14 but if he was starting in the spine over the course of a season he’d be exposed. One trick pony with the right foot step

The only reason wishart got reps in the halves the last 12 months is because Pezet’s ACL was cooked

I do think the risk vs reward of signing Pezet who’s injury history is a worry and his on field performances aren’t elite + losing Coby Black as a result is quite the gamble

Broncos get away with so many daft decisions because of the sheer amount of resources available to them

They literally let Reece Walsh go to the warriors 4 years ago and because of his baby daughter he had to move back to Brisbane on a cut price deal

And now he's virtually the No 1 player in the world.

Broncos didn’t want him to go, they wanted Black and Pezet to fight it out and see who comes out on top

But since it’s November he can do whatever he wants

o Rumours are that Wishart returning is one of the more likely outcomes.. and it makes sense as hes a steeler originally and his dad... he probably will never secure a starting spine spot (or anywhere in the top 13) at the Storm. I don't hate him coming back, im not sure where we would play him though as we sort of have that 14 role sewn up I assume with Kyle and we have Atkinson and LKT too.. and I dont actually know what Wishart's best position is.. thats the main problem... but he seems to have good footy iq.. I dunno if he could be a starting 7.. and I doubt we get him for 2026 anyway now that the Storm lost Pezet.

o I think the Broncos have been ruthless to sign Pezet over the top of Black after so many years developing him.. but Black is young.. he will turn 21 start of 2027 season.. i.e. when Pezet starts.. so arguably still 1-2years short.. whereas Pezet will have some serious first grade under his belt... and potentially Pezet/Mam will be there longterm halves pairing now. I don't however know what the attraction to Canberra was mind you, they have Ethan Strange in front, and they've been trying to sign every 7 they can of late (on the cheap only).. not sure if they are still doing that...

Mailroomsgi Mailroomsgi said Wishart is overrated. I agree but I think he'd be good on the bench, coming on to give Liddle a rest or there in case of injury. Just as long as he isn't asking for too much money.

If Cook has retired, Liddle is probably our 9.. and either Kyle or Wishart as a 14.. but.. if Wishart came here from the storm.. I think it would be for a 1-13 position.. he could probably make a good fist of ctr, maybe too slow for fullback.. 6 ideally.. but we have Atkinson.. 7 maybe.. but we need someone for this year, so if were gonna take a punt its probably this year.. probably its Atkinson.. dont rly like the idea of 2 years in a row 'taking a punt' on your halfback.

This assumes no other 7s on the market we would be chasing.. Metcalf was the one we were after but we missed him.. oh and sorry im forgetting Savala.. hes the other and brings the big boot.. but I havent seen a single rumour that we have even spoken to him or have any interest.

I thought he was very average at centre in the GF. Worst player on the field. He says he wants to be a 9. I think that suits him. Coming on elsewhere only due to injury.

If you judge Canberra by their actions and not by words I’d say Ethan Sanders maybe hasn’t hit the heights they thought he would so far, so signing Black and maybe selling it to him that Sanders is by no means promised a spot in a year or 2 from now was enough to convince him

On the wishart topic, if we sign him that would make absolutely zero sense to me. Daniel Anderson is a smart and logical thinker. He would surely think where does he fit and is it a smart use of salary cap to pay a decent bit of coin for a player that’s not great in a specific position. Kyle and Liddle contracted for a while in similar position and Mason Phillips 12-18 months away from NRL potentially who is a bonafide Hooker with talent

I’d rather use the coin to upgrade and extend our good young guys we want long term and sign a Stud Fullback (Tolu Koula 👀)

The rumours I’ve seen floating about link Wishart to Perth which makes complete sense for a new team coming in to sign a player that can fill nearly any position. I haven’t heard too much about him returning to us and to be completely honest I don’t really think we should go for him.

I don't know much about Mason Phillips so I'll take your word for it. Other than hooker the only position we are lacking in is outside backs, in my view. Wingers specifically. I know Williams is big and fast but I think it's too early to say he's going to make it in the NRL yet. I'm much more confident about Heidke and Buchanan.

But that depends on LPT becoming that big prop jodragon40 jodragon40 often talks about and more than anyone else, depends on Reed becoming a top halfback. With all these halfbacks coming and going off the market, I don't think Flanno will survive Reed not working out.

Bringing Wishart back will only further the muddy waters of where he plays in our team. Long term I think we have the 9 sown up with Liddle KF and Phillips. We need specialists in their positions not utilities, plus he has mentioned that the Dragons didn't do him any favors in his development and his dad backed him up. For me let him seek something at the Bears.
You think KF can transition into a decent hooker this late in his career? I doubt it but I fully support him getting a chance in reserve grade. Halves to start the year should be 7. Reed and 6. Hammoud. I think Phillips will still be in Jersey Flegg.

I doubt it too Chris. In my opinion, he lacks the middle forward toughness and the fortitude needed to withstand adversity and the pain. Would he be resilient enough, I don't think so. It's tough in the middle.
Wont know DD until we try him there, say in the trials. He did go into the middle when he was off the bench last season. But mostly edge. He is a big unit and can play big minutes even when he is unfit. Being fitter now may bring a change in attitude, will wait and see. I still rate him.

The rest are conjecture.Toby will return to the front, expect Ryan on one edge where he played before his ACL. Cook blah, Egan has no ball skills and lacks the strong defense needed. Nick T is a show at either lock or edge.
Yeah I dont know about Egan RVH, I thought he went quite well before he did his ACL, I would have had him locked into that spot.
