Recruitment and Retention for 2026

Chat at the time was that Firman was a victim of Barrett ... Something happened in that Round 1 game vs the Raiders and Baz had a whinge ... Firman was blamed/relegated and then snapped his leg a week or so later.

Head was probably the 2nd best halfback option we had post Noel, for mine Dean Byrne was the one who had the ability but again injuries were cruel to him.

Byrne and Head though, actual halfbacks ... it has been a while.
Yep a quarter of a century believe it or not

As I previously mentioned, we wanted to keep Finau Latu bad, but his manager didn't even given an opportunity to offer a contract. I just thought of something that I have never seen spoken of on forums or in the media. Canterbury could have offered "his manager" extra money (undisclosed and not on salary cap)? Think about it. If a club was to offer the manager, an extra 100K or even 200K on a player's 500K contract, that would entice a manager to want the player to sign with that said club and not give the current club a chance to counter offer. Now that I think of it, it could be common practice. It probably couldn't even be policed either. It even sounds like a good idea. I think he will be a top line forward and it will hurt seeing him be that at Canterbury. He may even play origin in the future.

What was more interesting was that post all this to-do with Latu happening his manager and crown parted ways with his manager joining Wasserman.
The other key player the manager had with us was Halangahu who signed a new deal with Crown/Tartak and stayed.

I am sure others know more about his however it did appear from the outside looking in that shit went down within Crown after Latu joined the dogs.

I agree they paid overs for him ... and i also agree i probably wouldnt have gone that way ...

But getting him has meant they have signed Turuva/May x 2 all of whom have improved them - yes they may be flogs but the one key signing gave them the next ones. My hope in this is that KK opens the door for others who may see the pack building and think - yep, i could enjoy running in the space KK creates for me.
Yeah good point. Wests look to be a close knit playing group with Luai, the May Brothers and Turuva who all played for Penrith or in Terrill May's case related to one who did and that helped them get Taylan. They probably were responsible for Marshall keeping his job and being extended. I think Wests will improve over the next few years.

I actually wasn't a Goldthorth fan, but he did alright.

About 20 years ago now the NRL introduced the A.A.S.(Accredited Agent Scheme). All player managers must be registered with this scheme.

This scheme regulate conduct, set standards (like commission fees), and protect both the players/clients and the league/organization. Its administered by both the NRL and the Players Association. It is policed by the NRL. I believe it's still active.

I think it goes the other way - i dont see Benji as someone that will drive standards. Feels like it could easily become a joint like us around the time of the BBQ. When the mood strikes they will pull out a good game but weekly grind of NRL will be beyond them ...

Good players don't always make good coaches. I believe personally that Marshall is an example of this. Just my views.

The thing with Reed is the history of players like Beau Henry - a kid who did it all in juniors/promised the world and simply failed to take that step.
We cannot just think Reed is the future and open an uncontested path for him ... we have to continue to recruit capable players and pick the best of them.
As an old ressies coach from many moons ago. In my time I can count the number of the next big thing actually taking the step to 1sts on 1 hand.

Step is definitely not the right analogy, it's always been a long and winding staircase in my view.

I have never considered myself left or right wing. I have always considered myself an independent thinker and had/have some views that are labelled left wing and some that are labelled right wing. Going back 15 years plus, I think others would have put me in the left wing category. I noticed that site would ban posters for expressing views/opinions/beliefs that are now labelled right wing, but often wasn't labelled right wing 15 years ago or more. That in itself is what bigotry really is, which the site says, they do not tolerate. I am quite certain that no one has been banned from that site in the last 13 years plus for expressing any views/opinions/beliefs, which are now labelled left wing. I also use the word "labelled". One thing I thought was left wing was "freedom of speech", but the left wing don't fit that criteria anymore. 15 years ago or so. I also thought the right wing was "politically correct" and the left wing were the ones who weren't politically correct. Was I wrong about that or is it that it has now it has been flipped.

PS I am not interested in getting into any political discussions on this site. I am only pointing out what I have "noticed" and noticed long ago and think should be pointed out and said.
I got banned for saying something that was definitely correct because I was there at the time and knew what went on and what was true ....... But was banned because they didn't like the truth .....

Nobody should fear a ban on here. I had to do my 1st and only 1 yesterday and I've been on here for years. If there is an issue we will email the entity directly and discuss the issue constructively. I've always found in my long work career you can't only be a good communicator you also need to be a good listener. If there is an issue there will be a warning after that it's up to the individual whether they wish to stay and comply with our terms of use and rules or they wish to leave. Not hard , we are all grown men and if I may say so myself this is a great forum.

benji is a massive draw card in recruitment, players look up to him. they’ve come off 3 spoons and made good signings. placed higher than us last year. way i see it they’re just like us trying to build their roster nicely & bring good kids through to get away from the bottom
