Recruitment & Retention 2027

If players knew Flanno wasn't the coach anymore, would we be a more attractive recruitment destination? I doubt players are coming to be coached by him, especially the younger ones who don't really care about his premiership & tbh looks washed out now with his game style.

We are the Illawarra Dragons
It is starting to look that way. We wear the predominately red jersey too often. I think it should only be worn at away games, when when playing teams who have a predominately white jersey, such as Canterbury or Nth Qld. The changing of the logo is moving away from the St George brand and history. At the new CEO that new logo is everywhere. At the COE, they only trophy on display was us winning the 2010 premiership. They are not even recognising all the premierships and the midweek cup St George won. I think it is very disrespectful towards St George. Illawarra didn't win anything pre merger for them to display or remember. At the game at Wollongong there was some kind of "red towel" promotion, which looked "Illawarra" to me. It wasn't a red V towel or even a red and white towel. There were people in the crowd holding up that "red towel" when we scored. It seems to me they are moving more and more away from anything that is "St George" and more and more towards anything that represents, signifies, or symbolises Illawarra. The COE being built at Wollongong and the ground upgrade at Wollongong will have us firmly entrenched at Wollongong. If we had been successful based at Wollongong, it would be hard to argue against it, but that hasn't been the case for the last 14 years that we have been based there.

When we merged (Joint Ventured), St George looked to be the dominate partner. The Jersey was St George, the logo was St George. It was said St George will provide the money and Illawarra would provide the juniors and half the games would be played at Kogarah and half at Wollongong. Some even said it was basically St George taking over Illawarra. Well it hasn't turned out to be successful in the long term. It now appears that St George provides the supporters and that is about it. If you look at the forums, I think the majority of St George Illawarra fans who were fans before the merger are "old" St George fans. There doesn't appear to be many "old" Illawarra fans on the forums

We have not been an attractive destination for recruitment since 2012, long before Flanno took over. It has gotten worse since 2012. First it was Price's, then McGreggor's, then Griffin's fault. Now it if Flanno's fault. I remember saying in 2012 that we could end up as a club that players didn't want to play for, similar to Souths before were bought by Holmes A Court and Russel Crowe and before they signed Roy Asotasi. I am not happy about being correct in that prediction either, but I could see the writing on the wall back then. Since Souths were bought by Holmes A Court and Russell Crowe and signed Asotasi, they have been a much more attractive destination for recruits. They have signed big many marquee players such as Sam Burgess, Greg Inglis, Latrell Mitchell, Jack Wighten, David Fifita and probably others I can't think of off the top of my head. Our billionaire half owner, doesn't looked to have done anything to make us a better destination for recruits, or set up TPA's. Is being located/based at Wollongong the problem? Koloamatangi is our biggest name/marquee signing we have made since 2012, with Ben Hunt the only other one who could possibly be in that category. This problem certainly didn't start with Flanno coaching us. Flanno has been trying to fix the problem, but could being located at Wollongong be the problem? Sorry if this is "unpopular" with some on this forum. The lack of success if obviously "unpopular" on this forum. We have been blaming coaches for the last 14 years, but as Phil Gould said, our problems go beyond our coach. As I have pointed out, no teams who are not based in the big cities such as Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne have had much or even any success in the NRL over the last 28 years and chances are none will be winning a comp in the next 5 years or more. Redcliff have come into the only few years ago, but are already looking stronger and to have a better future than any other club no based in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne. I don't think the WA Bears or Papa New Guinea Chiefs will ever win a comp either, certainly not in their first 15 years in the comp at least. New Zealand is yet to win a comp since entering the comp in 1995. They have played in 2 grand finals, but not since 2011.

So Flanno hasn't been able to fix the problem that we have had long before he took over. He did say he was implementing better pathways programs. That is a long term plan, which will take numerous years to bear fruit. We did make our biggest name signing in Koloamatangi under Flanno. Next year, will should have a forward pack that can match it with the better teams in the comp, with most of them being under 23 years old, all of which I think Flanno has blooded and developed. We will have a halfback who looks our best halfback prospect, possibly since Billy Smith. That can provide a foundation for success. But Flanno may not be here to reap the rewards for what he has sown. I doubt any other coaches would have had success as our coach over the last 2 years and 4 games either.

Frank, you're starting to sound like a fan giving the coach more time, possibly another year?

Don't get soft now his time is up! ............,new coach and new modern direction needed.

These young forwards cant keep banging their bodies and get defeatist, this is not fair on them or us fans

I am stating the our problems were there long before Flanno took over. I am saying that I don't think any other coach would have done any better than Flanno has over the last 2 years and 4 games for us. I do think he shouldn't be playing Kyle, but I don't think King Togia is the answer. I would be playing Reed if I was in his position and coaching for my career. I am saying that being located at Wollongong is the problem and has been the problem, since Bennett left. I am saying that our billionaire half owner doesn't look to have done anything to help us win.

I'm not sure if Wollongong is the real problem and it doesn't matter because it's the new home mostly from now on. So we need to suck up and get on and make it attractive for others.

Flanno’s not 100% responsible but has certainly contributed to the problem. He’s gotta go

I haven't read it but please, I beg, tell me Frank isn't still banging on about all our ills being due to being based in Wollongong....... Not only is it tedious but it's plain wrong!

Before Flanno was coach, Price, McGreggor and Griffin were all the problem who had to go. The common denominator in the time all the above 4 coaches have coached us is us being based/located at Wollongong. Since 2010 only one team has won a premiership that wasn't located in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne. That is the common denominator. Does anyone see a team who isn't from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane winning a comp in the next 5 years. I don't and everyone I ask doesn't either. Those teams are just making up the numbers for the TV deal.

Kyle must go. I can blame Flanno for sticking with Kyle, but we haven't exactly had any other halfbacks or 5/8's besides Reed who I would like to see in our team. I wouldn't not be against him coaching us next year, with the team he has assembled and developed since taking over. I would rather we wait go big for the likes of Ivan and Nathan Cleary, who I doubt would sign with us or go big for Webster when he if off contract. By then we should have a much better team and possibly be attractive to propective coaches. I would like Bruce Gordon to open his cheque book offer the likes of Cleary and Webster the biggest contracts any NRL coaches have ever got to entice them to coach us. That would be him contributing in some manor. I would even add Bellamy to that list, but again, I doubt he would come and coach us either for any amount, but at least have a go. If we sign pretty much any other coach, chances are we will still be in the same or similar situation in another 5 years from now. I think the same things apply to all the other non Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne based teams as well.

I would also like to see Flanno given until next year, just to give him a chance with a decent roster and and a chance to prove all the Flanno blamers and haters wrong and see us make the top 8 next year. I never expected us to make the top 8 the previous 2 seasons or this season. Before this season started, I said, I was hoping we could be a top 8 team by next year and that same still applies. I also said I would be playing Reed at halfback this year. That is my biggest gripe with Flanno. Him picking Kyle also looks like it is also getting the playing, players relatives and fans all offside with him. I agree we should have better than Kyle. We also need some faster and better backs. I would be looking at Jenkins for starters. Hopefully Jesse Williams can come on this year and be our other winger by next year, but we have already signed Sami, who I am not very happy about. We need a good fullback, I have stated many times who I would go for as that player, but it doesn't sound/look like we have even tried to sign him. By next year, we will have a good forward pack and a good halfback. That is the base for a good team.

We have not won a game this year, but we came very close against Canterbury. Were leading Melbourne with 20 to go, before the wheels fell off. Were in the game against Parra, pretty much all game and then got beat near the end of the game by the Gold Coast. With a bit of luck, we could have won all the games we played this year, but instead we have lost all of them. If we had won against the Gold Coast, Josh Hannay would have been 4 loses from his first 4 games.

There’s a massive difference being in the mix for the 8 but sort of just dropping short and being inept, dog shit, rudderless and stone cold last on the ladder.

From the 35th min vs Parra until full time vs the GC we were reserve grade quality. Absolute garbage. All 2nd half vs Parra they we’re begging to get beat, playing poorly, man short for 10 mins, a 2nd rower playing centre and we totally screwed it up over and over again.

The GC game, geez, where do I start?? That was the saddest performance I’ve seen from Saints in a long time. Horrible, horrendous, garbage, dog shit, whatever you want to call it. GC were about a 3/10 and found a way to win in the last 10 mins. So what does that say about us?? That performance was as soulless since the dogs destroyed us at Kogarah for the Lance Thompson memorial game. RIP Thommo.

As I indicated in another post Flanagan is still a no go zone with a number of player managers.

I was there, never ever during that game did I believe that we were going to go on with it even after we hit the lead. We still lack a game manager

Agree with all that, but coach still needs to go.

The team is just going through the motions overall. .......its so slow and painful with absolutely zilch creativity. We can't win like this.
Just my 2c worth. As a coach by the time round 1 comes along you have decided with the personnel you have what game plans you can have based on the current team.

As a coach you have to set achievable goals and targets that the players can reach and buy into.

You won't be seeing 2nd phase football from inside our half much this season because we simply don't have the speed and creativity in our backline.

You won't be seeing surprise chip and chase, inside flick passes or taking on the line with dummy or steps because that is not the types of players that we have in our halves.

We have big players, Suli/ CT in our backs and the edges Luc and Su'a your not going to make speed related game plans around those players.

So the game plans need to be restricted to your individual players and the team as a whole strengths.

I just base those comments on my own personal experiences. Just my views.

Unbelievable! We are on a 8 game losing streak, lose to NQ and Manly in the next two rounds and we'll be in NRL losing streak record territory by the time Origin comes around, well under 40% win ratio, probably worse than Price, McGregor and Griffin and you want to give Flanno until next year. Talk about a losing culture.

But I don't believe. Do you have some kind of personal relationship with the Flanagan family? Or let me put it this way; After Flanno is sacked, will you still support the Dragons?

I agree that we looked terrible against the Gold Coast. We were leading with not long to go, after playing that badly. I know it was the Gold Coast. I also agree 100% we lack a game manager. That is why I would be playing Reed. He looked excellent in the trial against Souths. He was easily our best player that night.

Reed showed in the one trial game he played that he was prepared to chip and chase and I think he was also prepared to take on the line with a dummy or steps.
