Recruitment & Retention 2027

Putting all the puzzle pieces together:
  • Purdue staying put
  • Bula looking like staying put
  • Tracey staying put
  • Us not being interested in signing Fuller for 2027
Drinkwater becomes the last cab left at the station, with nowhere else to go apart from us who can offer him fullback cash.... and we must be pretty confident.. otherwise Fuller for 2026+2027 was a no-brainer move..

With KK, Drinkwater & Sami signed (if that all proves right), add in a competent 7 and that is the nuts and bolts sorted.. with a half decent coach & 12mths on our young forwards... we should be able to be far more competitive in 2027... I mean it'll still be the 17th best roster but the roster-gap that ive been banging on about for years will be less pronounced.
I'd like them to make it a rule for the next 2 years that no one under 25 or 26 can be signed. Even if it means we have to go back before going forward. I'm just so sick of the club signing all these veterans at the end of their careers. Some of them are still good but we have signed way too many of them over the last several years!

I'll take it that you mean "over"

I’ve taken the responsibility of pretending to be Daniel Anderson with full autonomy over the incoming and outgoings of the team, this would be the 2027 changes I would make or would like to see

Fullback - Prefer Bula, think it’ll take a minimum of 3 years to get him at 800k PA. By far the best all round including age/upside

Drinkwater 2nd - Turning 30 next year and is reliant on his pace, excellent ballplaying and defence is shite. Would not be offering any longer than 2 years unless the 3rd year was a club option

3rd - Fuller on a 1 year deal next year if we miss out on the other 2 guys listed above, I know he’s knocked us back for an immediate chance to play now but if you offer him 450k for a year instead of 200k he’s on now he’s coming

Halves Situation

Atkinson 6 and Reed 7 pending his development and progression in cup

LKT backup 6 and Kyle backup 7

Hooker situation

-Liddle starting and Cook let go, Jayden Brailey or Tom starling whoever we can get from Canberra to share minutes with Liddle

Edge Backrowers

-Let Leilua go and I’m ambivalent on Sua. Keep him if it’s a good price, let go if it starts to creep past 600k, we have backrowers coming out the wazoo. Time to use them

Middles
-Extend both couchmans asap, Stewart lock and Keaon front row with Toby is the core of an excellent middle group
-Need a decision on Loko, has the frame now needs to out it together and show some tangible improvement in cup

I'd like Kyle to leave with his Dad. Put this whole episode in the rear view. Plus have O'Neill and Hammoud. I know Mug Fan Mug Fan was talking about another halfback as well, I think only a year younger than Reed. Can't remember his name.

No player should be making any decisions until we appoint our 2027 coach... get a feel for what our future looks like coming out of this situation, obviously as of 'right now' its not a place you would want to be if you have other options.

But yes im not sure Sua has as many external offers as some may think.. hes ok but hes on big coin and hes not in the top 20 or so of 2nd rowers out there.. id even take Egan over him if he can actually stay healthy for the season... thats still yet to be seen though.

Backrowers hate playing middle, unless they get paid a motza they don’t want to do it. Way more tackling and cardio than playing edge

Gun to head I think Sua will go, he’ll get a big offer from Perth and he’s 29 in a few month's, it’ll be his last big contract. I’m not fussed if he goes due to the young guys coming in to replace him

Tamale is shit, bostock definitely was the one, could’ve had a team with bostock and Lomax on the wings with Garrick in the centres… could’ve had a lot which haran has overseen and fucked up… conveniently his contract is up at the end of the year
What😂

Most reactionary statement haha, Tamale is a gun

Bostock is very good as well, imagine them 2 on either wing for us 💀

The Robson/Mcinnes situation is one of the all time fuckups

Many backrowers have made the transition from backrow to prop and been very good at it. Papali, Koloamatangi, Chris Walsh, Pat Jarvis, Barnett, Les Boyd, Luke Bailey, Janson, Stone, Steve Price, maybe Paul Harrigon and or Anthony Butterfield started their careers off in the backrow.

It’s not a very common thing, a lot also just can’t do it at a high level. They might be a 6 or 7/10 at prop but they’ll want big money and they might just move elsewhere if you tell them you have to play prop

It’s a non starter lads trust me, you’ll almost never see an established backrower move to the middle willingly

Wowsers. I love that list you have compiled. Some of them would be on the aged pension these days. Stick to modern day players not some who played the game over 40 years ago

What you say is valid, but some wingers defy what you say. Ones such as Eric Grothe from the 80's, Brett Morris, Semi Radranda, Nawaqanatiwase and Greg Inglis, when he play wing were all match winner all come to mind and are more than just wingers who finished off what the players inside them set up or created. In today's game, good wingers are more important than ever. They take hit ups. Their aerial ability can be match winning. Jacob Kiraz has a great offload, same with Lomax. Lomax was a revelation on the wing.

Personally Nawaqanatiwase would be the first winger I would choose for NSW this year. I think he is a very special player, who can do things most others can't.

Semi Radrandra was such a special winger. He was much more than just a winger.

Jenkins form has even surprised me. I certainly wouldn't have had him in the picture for a NSW wing position at the start of the year. I thought he wouldn't even be in Penrith's first grade team, after being dropped for the finals. If Izack Tago didn't have a disrupted pre season and was picked for game one, Jenkins may not have even been playing first grade this season.
There are always exceptions but rule of thumb is what I have indicated
