Recruitment & Retention 2027

Glover is not same as Ilias ... Glover was told he was next to get a chance, was told earlier in the season he was in front of LKT.
Controlled reserves all year as a proper 7 when 1st grade needed a 7 .. didnt get a chance at all because daddy preferred junior.
Justified in his decision to leave and be disgruntled - however the choice of club to go to a bit interesting considering the depth the bunnies have in halves/
Glover is currently 23 years old and is yet to play first grade. Even at 22 last year, he would have been late to play first grade. Not many backs who have not played first grade by 23 turn out to be anything special. There are some exceptions. Cliff, Lyons 23, Paul McGregor 23, Cody Walker 26 and Nicho Hynes 23 are 4 players who come to mind. Lyons turned out to be very special. Here is a copy and paste regarding McGregor

Dapto centre played reserve grade with I’warra in 1989 but returned to the local competition the following year to play with his mates. McGregor was at first reluctant to return to grade but was finally lured back to the Steelers in 1991.

The plot thickens.

I can understand the clubs reluctance to invest time and resources in players who aren’t here for the long term.

It must cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring a promising youngster up to even factory standard.

That would be a consideration for retention. How much the club has put into the player and whether it’s been value.

Within individual variables, what’s an acceptable pass mark?

I have a mate who got told his nrl footy ambitions were over. 5 or 6 years later he’s eternally grateful for the honesty of that coach. It might spoil the story for some, but my footy mate rated Hook. I think you can have good footy minds out there that can’t quite find their way at certain clubs and so forth.

Hes playing in the Penrith A grade this season as he loves footy. Training is a lot of running and even more running during the milder summer evenings. Horses for courses!
I think there would be many good players who for different reasons, don't make first grade or maybe should have or could have. Some don't even get picked for the junior rep teams because of favourtism towards others or for what ever reasons.

Yes.

It’s a sport that never strays too far from emotions.

And there’s plenty of cases of players and coaches over-indulging!

In the heat of the battle, it’s can be more understandable, but some of the off field stuff hits another level.

As for retention, I’m still wondering how the brains trust decide someone’s not going to make it.

DA is supposed to be a guru at this.

The average career in the NRL gets shorter each year.

I think the chances of an Ilias rebirth is slim unless he can screw his head on. That could never happen.

Cook would under enormous strain now. The mental strain of being asked to perform like you did years ago.

Like those weightlifters whose bones shred through their skin. The mind orders the body to do stuff it can’t do.

I think he was an aus schoolboy. A prodigy of some kind.

I know it was true several years ago a lot of the most talented schoolboys never make it. Some have a body type that doesn't suit the game they played in the age restricted games. Some just aren't prepared to put the hard work in. Some played the game for fun and don't have motivation to become a professional.

As for body type etc, when I got a photo with DWZ one day, we were embracing in a gentlemanly way and by the crikey, his upper back was solid. Concrete solid.

And so far as I know he has but factory strength and build.

It brought home to me the extreme nature of training for NRL. I can’t blame any youngster who finds it daunting or too much.

And after you’re fit and strong enough, then you have to find the skills and abilities beyond that.

The human body simply wasn’t built for this type of impact. Our players are incredible athletes, courageous. They continue to astonish me.

I knew a bloke played lock al his life until he hit open age. He was an outstanding lock, won a lot of awards and all that. In the open age he had the build of a typical hooker. They tried to turn him into a hooker or at least an interchange who could play hooker but didn't work out. He gave up and ended playing in one of the group competitions. Can't remember which but heard he was very good.

I'd rather read that than gossip about another club.
You dont have to have to read anything that doesn’t match your interests.

During preseason with no news, im interested in peoples take on recruitment.

Ryan was talking about a good player who wasn’t allowed to follow his own natural position and therefore was lost to the game. It’s a good point and I wonder how often that occurs?

I might ask DA about it one day. I’m sure he’d be open to answer it.

first player:

I had to pick up the phone
And ring the members true
with Dufty sitting next to me
and Piggy, yeah he knew.

second player:

The deals getting closer
27 all but done
But swapsys or an early release
To help me flee the Queensland sun

Im not youthful or a glamour
Not aged like dickhead hunt
I’m slow but still reliable
So the club who seeks me punts.
