Recruitment & Retention 2027

It feels like recruitment patterns across the NRL have shifted over the past five years. Most major signings now seem to be wrapped up at least a year in advance, while the upcoming season is filled by lowerโ€‘grade promotions, hence the need to stockpile promising juniors, or players moving on after a fallout. At this rate, weโ€™ll probably be talking about our 2028 recruitment strategy before long.

An amusing story about The Mole from a mate of mine who worked at Souths a few years ago. The Mole, of course, was an "anonymous" gossip column in the Rugby League Week, and in one issue there was a hush-hush piece along the lines of "a young Souths player accuses coach of favouritism, furious at not getting a start in first grade" etc etc. The Souths officials had an inkling of who it might be, but couldn't be sure. They suspected it was a certain kid who was a bit of a douche and had attitude problems. In the very next weekly issue of RLW, they featured an interview with that very player, conducted by Tony Adams, aka the Mole. That player, of course never played first grade at Souths nor anywhere else.

Bula was apparently about to sign with the Tigers over 2 weeks ago but still no announcement.
If Purdue does extend with Nth Qld, at least he didn't go to one of the Sydney or Brisbane clubs, or Melbourne.

If we were prepared to offer Bula 900K a season. I wonder if we offered Purdue 900K a season to play fullback for us, if that would have got us his signature? As you all know, I would take Purdue for fullback over Bula for the same price.

It was said Dearden was offered 1 mil a season from a rival club, but chose to stay in Nth Qld for 700K. That is a big difference, like an extra 40% more than 700K. Maybe his contract with Nth Qld was topped up with 3rd party payments?

With Dearden and Purdue, Nth Qld have 2 top line spine players to build a team around, as long as Purdue does extend.

The young man is a good player but is it worth it to have that kind of attitude at a club? It usually ends in tears.
At least 95% share that attitude but some are less open about it.

He's a very good fullback from what I've seen but a million $ a year? I'm not so sure about that.
