Round 17 vs Eels

Another twelve point lead, another loss.

I have to admit the “ball did not cross the plane” decision against Shonkies was an absolute joke !!

But Flanno is just plain stubborn about wanting the team to defend when they have a lead.

Anyway, what about Cook or Liddle into the halves ?

Kyle must be in a good union as his job security is very high !!

I think he’s the only member though !

His dad is the secretary..
I have said before , for me we are not getting enough out of Holmes in the centre's , I would have him at fullback , Gutho doing ok but not quick enough anymore , Gutho to 7 , I'd keep Nick at centre , with Suli if we have to or Allan to his position and throw Suli on the wing for hit ups because that's all he does ....... Or give Ilias another chance at 7 ........

Can I ask, why are you, and its not just you there are a few on this forum and others that are saying move Gutho to 7?

To my eye and I know that they are not what they use to be he has limited quick lateral movement and I wouldn't believe he could stand up to the rigours of front line defence.

Good point. Mid season it might be really hard on Gutho. With a full off season training at half, should be ok. I think Ilias has to be recalled and go with him and LKT for the rest of the season. If he's not cutting it, Gutho trains at halfback in the off season. By round 1 2027, Reed halfback and Gutho a bench utility for his last year.

I think he could do the job , being one of the fittest at the club , and tough enough to handle it ...... His ball playing would be better than we have at the moment of time and with Holmes at fullback he would be dangerous bringing the ball back ....... Just my opinion , and you are entitled to yours .........

Flanno is at it again. What are Dean Young and Ryan Carr doing? They have to confront Flanno and let him know his love for his only son has blinded him to reality and it's either Kyle gets dropped or Flanno gets sacked then Kyle gets dropped.

Shane Flanagan slams nepotism suggestions, puts critics of son Kyle in their place

St George Illawarra coach Shane Flanagan has slammed suggestions of nepotism around his son Kyle after two heavy defeats for the Dragons. Saints fans went into meltdown over the weekend after the club’s second-half capitulation against the Cronulla Sharks on the back of 56-6 loss to the Dolphins.
Most of it was aimed at his son Kyle rather than a number of his teammates who have also been struggling in recent weeks. “To say Kyle is under pressure is ridiculous,” Flanagan said. “I think people are looking in the wrong direction.
“He’s been among our best players all year. It’s not me, ask the other players and coaches. I’m probably harder on Kyle than any other player.”

So Flanno thinks we should ask rival coaches and players for their honest opinion. He's completely lost the plot!!!

Yep just read the whole story in the DT . He said a number of things such as:
" To say Kyle is under pressure is ridiculous ".
" In the last couple of weeks.... we've been steamroller in the middle".
" We know where our problems lie and will fix it".

So we have the bye this week then a must win game against the Eels at home. Enough time to fix the identified issue? Time will tell.

To say Kyle has been among our best and asking people to ask rivals about it is utterly demented! He's lost the plot. Is he still a good coach? I think he is but his blind love for his only son is destroying his career and bringing about more pain for the club and everyone involved in it.

I read it too. I want to talk about Phillip Rothfield. The well-know drunk with a severe case of St Georgephobia. In order to defend his good mate Flanno and a player in the team who clearly doesn't belong in first grade, he referred to "try involvements". If anyone thought "try assists" needed to be tightened up and made more specific, I give you "try involvements".

It's not that Kyle is a bad player he puts in every week , defends well tough enough to be a Bench player but definitely not a 7 to guide the team around ........ Something needs to change .........

I think you're right. If Flanno came out and said something like, "Kyle needs to pick up his game but right now, he's the best we have", it'd be hard to argue, wouldn't it? Might be true or maybe Ilias is better or maybe Gutho to half. Hard to say. Gutho is a skillful fullback and Ilias had his chance.

But stop saying Kyle has been one of our best! That is not true! Not even debateable!

Shane Flanagan is in denial over his son but surely he can see his continual inability to take charge of the team. It was his old man after all who put him at #7 as the chief play maker when he knows full well, as Jodragon says, K S will never be a game manager. I call that nepotism as former Dragon enforcer Gorden Tallis said in the Tele. And I agree with what he said, that S F has no choice but to make the hard call and dump his son, otherwise he himself has to go.

The writer of the article, Paul Crawley, listed the 16 other half backs in the comp and it it is plain to see that KF would sit at 17 or at best 16th in that list which would indicate his low standing as a 7.

However, for as long as we do not have the tough forwards taking the ball up hard etc we could have say Cleary as our half and he might flounder because of our "poor" forwards stock. Nevertheless, Kyle should not be the halfback for the Dragons. He landed into that position by default when initially he was to be the 14 in the team and we had Amone and Hunt at the time, but we know what happed to Amone and that led to Kyle being the #6 during Hunt's remaining time with us.

Hasn't this hit the headlines, 'Flanagan accused of nepotism'. Full disclosure here, I coached both my sons and both were talented. One perhaps, if things went his way could have had the opportunity to make 1sts but back in the day after he dislocated his kneecap followed by an ACL it was never to be.

So first hand , god I was tougher on them than any other player in my squads. Thank god I was never called upon to make that call to drop either because that would have been a heart wrenching decision.

Our strengths as a family was the ability to sit around the dinner table and discuss issues and to do so freely. Listening and communicating was very important.

The actual definition of nepotism is-
' When someone in authority ignores a more qualified person to hire or advance a family member into a position '.

So the question here is, has he? I personally don't believe so. Who has he overlooked?, who has he disadvantaged?

In my own personal experiences in coaching, and I never did this, was to blame an individual player for the woes of the team.

Coaching at any level is a tough gig, coaching in 1sts can be unforgiving but it should never get personal unless there is very strong evidence that supports such a view. Just my views.

Sir, the whole team has been disadvantaged by the coaches determination to shoe-horn his son into the team. Remember, coach said he was signed to be a hooker/utility.

You miss my point. It was about nepotism. The team has been disadvantaged not just because of 1 player who is playing out of position but reflects the team and club as a whole that it ever came to this.
