Round 17 vs Eels

Ok ill give you my personal experiences in Nepotism.

Work profession I was applying for a promotion. I was the best applicant on paper having served in that position for 12 months previously. However I did not get the job. Later I discovered 1 of the 3 panel members was related to the successful applicant.
Seems like nepotism. I don't know all the details but they way you explain it, I'd say it's definitely nepotism.
Coaching I applied for the coaching position. Once again I had served my time in the lower grades. Once again I missed out on the job. I was later told that the successful applicant was related to the club president.
As above though a bit harder to say for sure. Maybe the applicant was a young coach who had big wraps on him. Wasn't Nathan Brown, was it?
So how is Flanagan in his current position stopping a better applicant for the 7 jersey from obtaining that jersey? Who is better credentialled to wear the 7 jersey? In my view nobody. So it simply cannot be Nepotism because nobody who is better qualified is being stopped.
Well, straight away I'd say in my opinion Ilias is better than KF but I understand that's an opinion. Wasn't Bud Sullivan let go after KF was signed? He was definitely rejected even with Tigers willing to pay a very large % of his contract. If KF wasn't in the top 30 and on the money he is one who knows who might have come or might be getting a chance. Souths halfback who I think is injured now was going well after being plucked out of Manly reserve grade.
I rest my case your honour
Senior Constable, if Shane Flanagan wasn't appointed head coach, do you think Kyle would have been offered a contract with the Dragons? I'll need the witness to answer that before resting my case.

I did get promoted in the end during my professional career ended up a DSS.

Now that is exactly why it's not nepotism, what you have said there. KF being offered a contract is not nepotism, KF being offered a contract instead of Illias would have been. There has to be a detriment to someone as a result of any alleged nepotism. In KF case there hasn't been.

Did SF position as coach influence a decision by the club to sign him, now that is the question but a mute one.

To me -
* Hook gone May 2023, Hunt not happy - possibly first signs of being disgruntled.
* SF signs on 14 June 2023 to be head coach of the Dragons.
* Hunt on 19 June 2023 told by Club his request to be released is denied. SF has talks with Hunt and Hunt reluctantly stays on.
* Prior to all of this, Junior Amone gets arrested for hammer attack in Nov 2022 - so there is uncertainty about his playing future at the Dragons. He continues to play to October 2023. In the meantime, Hook goes, SF signs, Hunt's tenure uncertain then KF's position with the Bulldogs is also uncertain and contract not renewed so SF arranges his coming to the Dragons and KF signs on 7 Sept 2023 - as a utility as they had Bud Sullivan and Amone still on the books.
* Amone stood down by the NRL and therefore not in the team and if there was any nepotism shown it was KF selection over Bud Sullivan as KF started the 2024 season alongside BHunt in round1's victory over the Titans. Maybe Sullivan was injured - I dunno. KF remained in the team as the 5/8th and had an up and down year possibly better than this year alongside Hunt though and of course ended the year suspended for allowing Crichton's nose to enter his mouth.

I think you are right in your last sentence Jo. I feel sure that SF had some influence in having KF signed. I also think that while his Dad is the coach, his Dad honestly thinks that KF is OK as compared to what he has available and unfortunately all halves we have are below NRL standard. I think that KF will be playing against the Eels next week after the bye in #7 position and for the balance of the year if fit and not suspended.

Big day for the naming of the team tomorrow. Judging by the media and success of reserve grade.
  • Ilias or Glover could come in though unlikely.
  • Will Nick T be sent back to reserve grade or play in the second row, probably from the bench.
  • JDB, Couchman and Stewart will be three middle forwards. So out of Gular, Klemmer, Sele, Lawrie, LPT take the other 2 or 3 spots depending on who is partnering Su'A in the back row.
  • Who will the wingers be? CT if fit and joined by Lawson, Sloan or Finau.

I would like to see LPT back to KOE. he’s
starting to look weary and some of his runs have lost their venom.

I'd love Tonga to have a week or so back in Reserves also, hes not an every week proposition, that might be possible if Toby is back @8, and Sua back in the 2nd row.. then potentially if we could play Nick as the other 2nd rower, we can get Luciano back to the bench.. and now were balanced.. and with strength off the bench.

There are many armchair coaches who believe LPT should remain in 1sts and even be in the run on team.

I am not one of those. I was asked on another forum why is it that we blood our youngsters just to drop them back to Ressies in a few weeks time, especially when other clubs don't.

Anyone with any real experience in RL as a coach whether 1sts, Ressies or JF know the physical differences between each level. In my experience blooding a back into 1sts v a forward are two entirely different situations.

Yes you can get away with a naturally talented back being blooded and remaining in 1sts, akin to a Galvin or a Katoa but the high impact collisions in the forwards can quickly take its toll on a young body and cause serious injuries.

Even young Couchman was feeling those affects playing 8. LPT is also in my view showing the affects and needs to be rested for a few weeks or play in Ressies. He is not hitting as hard as he was initially to my eye.

I am sure the coaches and performance staff have the best interests, long term, of our young forwards. Just my views.

Fifita destroyed them last weekend, like holleee.. I dont mind that selection, perhaps they are considering extending him if he has a good game.. that said its a different world in 1st grade, and LPT also needs a week or 2 off anyway.

Toby needs to play prop though, this seems to be a blind spot for Flanno.. he doesnt want to back Nick to play 2nd row, but we cant afford to not have Toby there to help Jack out. But Nick is still on the extended.. so maybe..

God knows why Fifita is named
I agree. Just doesn’t have the motor to go decent mins. Played 36 mins last week, 30 the week before. Translate to 1st grade and he’s struggling to punch out 15-20 mins. A waste in my eyes. Better off putting Toby C up front and Nick T on the bench. At least Nick will make a bucket load of tackles and his motor is huge compared to Vili.

Rev I usually agree with you 99% of the time but in my eyes, Fifita has been nothing short of disappointing since joining the club. Such a shame but I just don’t see it changing.
