Round 24 - DRAGONS vs Tigers at Parra (Sun 4pm)

We still certainly lack a genuine game manager who can shut the game down in the last 10. Thats what I gleamed out of today's game.
I thought we focused too much on shutting the game down in that final portion. We probably should've been more ruthless when the Tigers were vulnerable and tried to kill them off. By "managing" the game it seemed to give them an invitation to attack us.

Anyway... not an easy win but no wins are easy when you're 17th. The boys are definitely a committed bunch though and fought hard under some adverse non-calls. Dean made some risky selection decisions in this one and its hard to deny they were correct (perhaps aside from Guler). LKT has lit up that left edge, and his try was a nice cherry on top of the tasty attacking cake he has baked for us out there. I didn't believe we were capable of scoring a try like that. It was Dolphins-esque.

The highlight of course was the Loko tackle though

My takeaway after re watching the 2nd half this morning was phew we got away with that one.

Atkinson was solid enough at the back , found his running game 20 runs albeit from fb for 181m only matched by who I personally consider one of the best young props to have ever come out of our juniors T Couchman 21 runs 181m, 80m post contact outstanding.

I hope the new Blues coach is sitting up and paying attention to this kid surely he has to be in the mix for a spot in his squad next season.

Stewart again menacing with the ball. Has a very smart football brain as we saw with his beautiful grubber kick in the 1st half. Don't be surprised if his name also is mentioned for a Blues spot next season.

Special mention to LPT those two next season will be outstanding for us as bookends with KK. LPT tackle to stop the Tigers forward late in the game after he had broken through the line was outstanding. Egan also matched his figures 13 hit ups for 120m identical.

LKT best running figures in his career 13 runs 89m he is our eyes up attacking 5/8 that we hoped Atkinson would have been and he also made 16 tackles didn't miss one definitely improving in that area well done. Set up a lovely try for Stewart and then scored 1 himself from that beautiful kick by Sloan.

Flanagan 2 runs for 9m, 19 tackles but missed 5 defensively poor yesterday which was unusual for him. Poor communication by Flanagan /Suli cost us 2 tries late in the game.

Thank god we held on though the Tigers finally starting attacking our weak edge alas too late. Two wins in a row next week against a desperate Bulldogs team trying to make the top 8. Kikau will be player we will need to stop.

No sir. Here is the rub for you:
  1. If LKT keeps playing like did yesterday, Kodi Nikorima is going to have a hell of a time keeping him out of first grade.
  2. KF has gotten still worse! But he's still trying hard so I guess it's ok.
Hope your right the kid is playing some good footy especially since coming back into 1sts. He is definitely working on his defensive frailties and yesterday was outstanding in defence. Thats all you can ask as of any player as a coach but you don't pay big $$$ for Nikorima to having him.play ressies

Agree with all you have said, we are still looking for a decent game manager. Hopefully Metcalf if he is fit next season

How good is back to back wins? Can we dare to dream that we may just avoid the spoon?

Positives:
- We showed great resilience to get momentum back at the beginning of both halves when the Tigers had a heap of posession. In the recent past we give up in these situations and let the opposition dominate.

- Hamish is going from strength to strength in the second row. He, LKT, Val and Sloan are producing some great attack on the left edge which is great because not much is happening on Kyle's side. Well done to the Big D on unleashing Hamish on the edge it is paying dividends already.

- Scramble defence was pretty good overall, we made some crucial one on one tackles especially towards the end to stop the Tigers come back.

Negatives:
- The right side attack is still pathetic and I feel sorry for Egan that he isn't being given as much opportunity as Hamish to show his attacking credentials, we can thank KF for that.

- We need to get out of the business of trying to defend narrow leads with 20 mins to go. 12 points is nothing in the modern game, we put the cue in the rack and stopped trying to score points for the last 20 mins which helped the Tigers back in to it. We should keep looking to score points and go on with the win. This is a key reason why we haven't seen many big margin wins for such a long time.

- Who do we have to cosy up to so that we can finally get some fair officiating? Multiple high tackles/HIAs with no repercussions or penalties whatsoever.
I think we were trying to score but kept on getting pounded by the ref

I think maybe KF will be the 18/19 next year if he is still there and if LKT is playing that well then I guess maybe Nikorima could be a 9. Just my thoughts but no way is Nikorima not in the starting 17

900k is huge money, that’s marquee player money for a spine player

If he averages 10 games a season it’s a massive i
Problem. If we can creep that up to 18-20 starts a season out of 24 games + 3 byes that’s fair enough given his injury history.

We’ve got some depth to fill in for half a dozen games if necessary + Drinkwater and Nikorima creativity mean there’s way less of a burden on LKT/Reed when coming in to be absolutely top class to win us games

Agree, then Walker asking for $1.4 is absolute elite I suppose, if he gets it.
