Round 6 v Manly

If I was selecting the team, my biggest selection dilemma would be who to start at fullback. It would be out of Holmes and Sloan. I settled on Sloan, because of his X factor in attack. The other one was my last bench forward out of Kerr, Lawrie or Sele. I would select Su'a captain.

1 Sloan
2 Tu
3 Holmes
4 Suli
5 Tuipulotu
6 Atkinson
7 Reed
8 Leilua
9 Liddle
10 T Couchman
11 Su'a (C)
12 Halangahu
13 Stewart
14 Cook
15 Pasifiki Tonga
16 Guler
17 Kerr
18 Sele
19 Buchanan

I'd suggest its just getting the kid use to game day atmosphere and being around the 1sts squad on match day. But your right after 4 ressies game he is sitting on the extended bench. Wouldn't surprise me it is also because Flanagan may not get through the game especially if he is hit hard. I was at the Titans game and he appeared to be unconscious for a short period of time after that head clash.
I feel our pack is stronger than Manly’s, but their backline has far more strike. The pattern this year has been fairly consistent, we match sides for the first twenty minutes, sometimes even look the better team, but once our middles begin to fatigue their outside backs cut us open.

jodragon40 jodragon40, interested in your thoughts on what a coach might emphasise this week to stop that pattern repeating.

One of the biggest issues that I see is how predictable our attacking structures are. It isnt really working.

Personally I would have been training this week using alternative attacking structures. An example being instead of hitting your edge forwards by running sideways and turning the ball back inside run a structure where your play makers take on or hold up the line and cutting out your edge forwards playing out the back, offer alternatives in attack.

The emphasis for me this week at training would have be, in defence, reducing the missed tackle count which has been far too high in the last 2 games and start communicating with your shoulder defender, number off in defence.

In attack increase our completion rates and obtain better field position. Chase hard kick chase do not have a staggered defensive line.

Thanks. I doubt Flanno reads this forum, but I’m pretty sure Tim Watsford does. Hopefully he passes the memo on.

I really think we are beyond fixing the current issues with Flanno, the team are just not there and have slowly but surely switched off, thats why he needed to cut Flanno now and introduced a new younger vibe to the surroundings.
I hope it's true and Flanno, Young and Ennis are gone and a complete new approach comes in from outside.

  4. Valentine Holmes
  5. Setu Tu
  6. Daniel Atkinson
  7. Kyle Flanagan
  8. Emre Guler
  9. Damien Cook
  10. Toby Couchman
  11. Luciano Leilua
  12. Jaydn Su’A
  13. Hamish Stewart
  14. Jacob Liddle
  15. Blake Lawrie
  16. Jacob Halangahu
  17. Josh Kerr
  18. Hame Sele
  19. Kade Reed

No surprise. Coach rushes the superstar halfback or 5/8 or now halfback in.

Only surprise is how utterly useless our management is for not sacking the coach yet.
Either way I dont think he'll use him. But to have KF at 7 again, didn't we have that last year, utter madness.

What caught my eye watching the Tigers play the Eels yesterday, young Madden in attack ran to the line with plenty of speed and then passing to a support runner. Our halves don't do that. Doueihi was great as the half back. He is a very good reader of play.

We need to get our attack in order but I feel our defence has gone down the tube and Manly have several long range try scorers in their team so cut them down and not let them run amok.

Fascinating.. if Gutho was available there would be a whole heap of possible changes.. but without him I'm thinking it could be:

1) Atko to Fullback (but I doubt it cause I think he wants a crack @6)
2) Val back to the left (thats the most basic of changes and long overdue)
3) Cook <> Liddle switching, dont rly feel this is necessary, just need to give Liddle more minutes

Dont think were doing anything silly beyond that.. there are more dramatic things around Kyle/LKT/Cook that I could see working, but I dont think we would do anything silly, and there is Reed, I mean maybe he does 20mins from the bench (if no injuries occur) that would be a positional change technically.. but I doubt Reed is in the equation just yet.

the only other one is potentially hamish playing on an edge with luch ball playing at lock, suli and holmes swap makes most sense.

Boys it’s obvious. Lawrie to replace Kyle at 7 when the game starts. Manly will be so stunned by this and Saints catch em off guard to win. The crowd also stunned will chant Flanno Flanno Flanno for an hour after the game, just like Rocky at the top of the stairs, arms raised in the air.
