League scene + Danny Weidler reporting Hornby and Brad Arthur are the main targets for Head Coach
I'd take Brad Arthur over Hornby, but my guy is Trent Barrett. Yes I can hear all the oh no's but as a very experienced assistant he has won premierships with the Panthers and Broncos. His attacking drills are one of the best as attested by Deine Mariner who today on the Footy Show said that all credit must go to Trent Barrett for the way that they attack. Yes, he failed at Manly, Dogs and Eels (interim) but what I am saying is that we need a much better attacking coach - one that we have not really had in over a decade but we wont be able to get Barrett as the assistant because he will stay on at the Broncos for as long as possible and maybe he might end up head coach there if Maguire finishes up. Alongside him I'd bring in James Maloney (If he can overcome some personal problems that he went through). Not too sure about a better defensive assistant coach though).League scene + Danny Weidler reporting Hornby and Brad Arthur are the main targets for Head Coach
Hornby would still have a tremendous amount of love for the Dragons. I only wished that he had a go at Super League head coaching. He has been assistant at the Dragons and several years now at the Bunnies under the coach that help win us a grand final and also JD. I have some reservations as to whether or not Hornby will be able to be a strong leader as the coach like he was as a player and would he be able to attract the types of players we really need to bump us up to a better level of results? If they can steer us away from Dean Young, I'll take anyone.. Hornby has no real head coaching experience imo.. but atleast hes gotten his assistant experience elsewhere.. and think hes a bit smarter in general... but be quite a dice roll imo...
Seems like JD & Arthurs are going decent in the UK, but I dont know how to assess their roster situation or really judge it.. I can see some pros and cons for both of those guys.. not enough to make a decision, but I would like to atleast talk to both of them before we make any decisions.... I thought this whole 2027 thing would happen over a month of interviews... and only once as had an interim in, but looks like we are going straight to head coaches.
I also rly didnt want the 2027 coach to start now and undo all the good will from players, fans, media that you get starting fresh in the offseason.. dont think there are many wins coming this season with no chance to fix the roster short-term, and no preseason to work with them... but Hornby willing to come now apparently.. so anyway we shall see..
Plus he played under Bennett then Price so he should have a good idea of what to do and what not to do as a coach. I know Deano did too but unfortunately, he's proven a bad assistant coach so I don't see how they can appoint him coach. If they can steer us away from Dean Young, I'll take anyone.. I just want someone to come in, not play favourites and pick the best available team each week. Not sticking with the same shit over and over then crying poor. Certain players are picked week after week no matter how poor they play.Plus he played under Bennett then Price so he should have a good idea of what to do and what not to do as a coach. But my choice would be Brad Arthur as well.
I wouldn’t be signing Trent Barrett beyond 2026, Dave, but he’s available, and he wouldn’t be any worse than our current head coach. He’d also be a better option than either of the assistants.I'd take Brad Arthur over Hornby, but my guy is Trent Barrett. The main thing is No Flanno, No Youngo and No Enniso.
