Don’t know how to explain this Steelers game other than we look toothless outside of Heidke and Reed. Don’t look like scoring at all

Steelers SG Ball Notes (20-34 Loss):
  • Missing a bunch of players including Mason Phillips + 2-3 of their best forwards against another unbeaten team.. tough assignment... the size difference is very noticeable, they have some big strong units.
  • Very windy conditions and the Raiders got off to a flyer with 2 tries under the posts for easy conversions... 0-12.
  • Finally got some ball.. Heidke with a big run to start the set and then a nice grubber from Reed to thread it into the ingoal for Hedike to finish. 6-12.
  • Next attacking set.. Reed > Borg > Saifiti too quick into the corner.. Saifiti is rly quick btw lol. 10-12. Goalkick off the upright from the edge.
  • Another barge over close to the ruck.. ffs.. we have to fix that area up just left and right of the ruck.. again in front, 10-18.
  • Been some flabbergasting decisions by the ref against us.. commentators are like wtf. 10-18 halftime.
  • Crap dropped ball turns into a raiders try out wide.. ffs.. 10-22.... then Kirk puts the restart dead in goal for a penalty on halfway.. come on boys..
  • Heidke runs about 40 with a beautiful slicing run.. I thought the offload might have been forward but tbf camera is at an awful angle.. trytime with Reed supporting. Beautiful tough conversion of his try too.. 16-22.
  • Heidke again lol.. Reed puts him in a little space and hes too skillful.. hes like a surgeon the way he cuts into open spaces. 20-22.
  • Damn it Saifiti makes an error on a hitup.. hes an incredible player but has some glitches.. and its rly hurt us a big canberra forward crashing over again under the posts, 20-28 that could be the game with goalkicking such a challenge.. 55mins in.
  • 3 raiders to contest Borg taking his bomb.. he knocks is back thankfully and Kirk has a 40m run into a penalty and were attacking their line.. Heidke cut down 1m out.. unforced error from Parker at dummy half.
  • Borg runs 50 off the kick return.. but 5mins left.. on their line but cant convert.. 4mins left.
  • Timmins runs 50.. but his eventual offload gets knocked back by a raider into another raider and they survive..
  • Penalty against us.. and a soft try for them to finish again under the sticks.. 20-34 loss.
Was a very even game, the raiders had more size than us was the only thing.. very hard to tackle some of those forwards running at pace.. but having said that a couple of key moments was all that was in it.. and letting them get off to a flyer.. rly hope we get DMeafou and Weatherall back soon.. our best forwards r out.. so we can be a better team than this.

Could do with another young 7 in one of the systems.. lot of pressure on young Reed who is going good.. though he should be in his 2nd year of SG Ball.. but feels like we are loaded with classy young halves but they are all 6's.. that said you can kind of see the difference in quality/growth required to keep moving up the grades.. watching TPH today in NSW Cup, who was my man crush last year.. ok well i had a couple.. its completely different, everyone is faster and heavier.. you have to be so much better than the average player, or be able to develop at a faster rate.

But just watching some HM highlights, their 7 was in everything, he looks too tall and solid for a halfback.. looks like an outside back or something.. and sort of looks like hes very calm and tbh almost too calm (something I say about LKT) but when he switches on, he talks, he runs, he kicks, he goalkicks, he throws long cutouts.. did everything required, think he was involved in every try today + the 1 he scored. Would be a next to impossible path to make first grade 7 at the chooks.

Yeah the size issue for TPH is too much to overcome, of the halves we have outside the NRL 17 I really like LKT,Reed and Jasais Ah kee as blue chip talents. Haven’t seen maclaren enough and been disappointed with Sargent-Wilson.

I don’t mind a taller 7, what I liked about that CC Roosters 7 was how he dug right into the line for his ball playing. A big bodied half doing that will always do well. The Fesolai brothers on that team are big time talents as well. What a shame the roosters have a hold on that region

I'm having a hard time judging the other young halves.. doesnt feel like ive seen enough of a sample size.. Charlie Jones has moments (the Dragons HM 7), Humphries and Brookfield in Steelers HM, Brookfield has some gun moments in his first 2 games.. including a beautiful long pass today... but he genuinely looks about 12 (his size and his face).. like.. genuinely if you saw him on the street. Boyle looks good in moments (Dragons SG #6), Sargent-Wilson I dont really notice..

Fitzy has some nice touches and his kicking game.. and I didnt think he would necessarily make it to Flegg, but then who else will be in Flegg? LKT will be in NSW Cup, Ah knee I dunno how old he is.. maybe next year he plays SG/JF? So not sure who the Flegg 6 is this year... Reed goes alrighty @6 also, but we need him to play 7.

Sometimes I feel like fans are too hard on halves... cause when the team is going great, the halves look like gods, but when the team is being dominated.. the halves look awful.. its the same player though.

Oh and my thoughts on Cody Ramsey today... noting that the footage was very hard to watch (Genuinely from the grandstand):
  • Cody came on at halftime at fullback and played 30 minutes.. took his first bomb and got plenty of cheers.. lots of slashing runs and was almost hyperactive when we were attacking.... he was floating left and right trying to look for opportunities.. still has speed and footwork.. lethal.. but.. just hasnt got the weight he used too.. so if anyone can get a hand on him hes easy to bring down (a lot like dufty).. and being so light would make it a real challenge for him to bring a big strong ball carrier down.. that said he doesnt lack for courage.
  • Not sure where Cody will play this year, im sure he could make a crack of NSW Cup, but I think Rumble or Sloan are the first choice Fullbacks... cant see him playing wing either with all the guys we have.. unless we have a lot of injuries... Ctr maybe.. but hes very light. Suspect he will probably play a lower grade... and have to wait for opportunity.

Yeah that’s a good point, Hammoud looked outstanding in SG ball playing behind an incredible forward pack, eager to see him in a less dominant side

Hard to judge them until you’ve seen them in a few different situations.
Ah kee looks special because he’s literally doing it all by himself at some points to keep a struggling St George side in games.
We’ll see over the course of the SZN how the young halves go but I’ve really liked what I’ve seen from Reed,Brookfield and Ah kee in a small sample size

I missed most of it

I only watched bits and pieces of it also, and I didnt know half of the players (Justa just posted the squad then in another thread which is starting to fill in some blanks for me)... I dont mean to be disrespectful but todays squad was rly just whoever wasnt already involved in another grade.. cause most of our actual NSW Cup squad is playing tomorrow.. im sure its the same for the roosters though... rly felt like we were just playing for a bit of exercise.. no real purpose.

I mostly just wanted to see the section that Cody played, hes the wildcard.. could he make it back.. could he not.. had his family on the field after the game.... very emotional for him... but was nice seeing TPH get a run though (without being amazing either), I thought he went ok, and tbf Borg is probably the only possible Flegg Fullback this year.. so 1 injury and who knows...maybe TPH does play this year..

I didnt really study the forwards but I now realise that big ranga was Hutchinson, I couldnt put a name to his face, and I swear he wasnt red before.. good to see hes still with us, I reckon he will play some Flegg this year for sure.. one of those ones that probably would have a contract if it wasnt for those big name forwards we have coming though who took all the spots.

Hopefully he continually puts on weight for the rest of the year and comes back at a good weight next year.

Realistically if Steelers SG go deep in finals.. I mean thats 9 + 3 or 4 weeks.. plus a rest week.. its half a season until they start filtering a few kids up.. so yeah I guess that really will be the flegg side for a good portion of the season.. plus maybe Buchanan is the only guy from tomorrows game that might drop back... or maybe Halangahu?
