Round 4 v Storm - Sat 3pm

Great win today, played with one less man for the entire 80 minutes and triumphed at the end, great character by the boys, defense on our line was really good compared to the last few weeks where we let so many soft tries, just need to back it up again next week against the ells.
Gutho was brilliant, he might be slow, but he aint slow between the ears, was also happy with Sloan, getting better and better each week, hopefully he can add a few more kg to his frame over the next 12months.
Special mention to Dylan Egan, huge game, his first run on debut he also got a 6 again and then obviously the big play, where he got that penalty, both times he was rewarded for attempting a quick play the ball, by doing that put pressure on the defence to try to hold him down and earned us 6/penalty, was watching him on the sideline he was practicing getting tackled and rolling up to play the ball quickly, if he keeps performing like that he will have along career and will be a fan favourite.

How are we going to keep all these kids?

I believe starting the game with Guler and Klemmer was a good move. Both are big bodies which can soak up energy from the opposition starting props, and they can give a bit back in defence as well. Bringing on the young brigade after twenty or thirty minutes, allows coach Flanno to inject some enthusiasm and mobility. I agree with the above comments regarding Egan and Couchman.

We move out the plodders like MMolo, Lawrie, Eisenhuth for starters, then eventually in a few years Su'a, Luch, Guler will move on along with JDB & Klemmer, hopefully with a little bit of game time here and there before they become starters, just need some patience (players)
Those kids are going to demand much more money than Eisenhuth, RFM, Lawrie.

For me this was one of the proudest wins ever. Back against the wall, showing heart, toughness & determination with our defence while taking our limited opportunities in attack. I'm just proud to be a Dragons supporter after that performance. Gutho's entire seasons salary is worth it after his performance. That performance matched his style imo, tenacious, gritty & competitive. Defensively we were amazing. Legitimately amazing.

Three games in and yet to be remotely enthused by Cook. Distribution is clean but that is his only asset. Watch his defense closely, is reluctant to make first tackle, when he does he usually misses his man or falls off him. No longer has that blistering pace needed to scoot from dummy half. Flanno erred bringing him here and making him co captain as he gets the priviledge of starting and playing far too many mins, while the better player, Liddle is given the crumbs.

All you guys were going ga ga over the Egan debut. Yes he showed intend with his strong running , has some mongrel and does his share of tackling. Gotta say I was more impressed by his bench mate Stewart. Pretty much took over Jacks role as back line link man, had a few good carries while his defense was clinical almost all round the legs like our great defender. I think we may have found Jacks replacement if Flanno things the same.

From an old coaches perspective. One of the signs of a good coach is identifying your weaknesses and strengths and try to find that balance so as to make the individual player and the team competitive. Yesterday's surprise victory, to all but the most ardent dragons supporter, against the premiership favourites is an ideal example.

No mass axeings after our opening 2 losses, basically the same 17 apart from a couple of changes and in a fortnight he is able to conjure up a victory from the same group of players who lost the previous 2 weeks.

So we finally have a coach who has more than 1 game plan, it's important to set achievable goals and targets that your team will buy into and support, now we have that group of players that believe and are committed, we saw that yesterday.

So the cornerstones are there, still need to attract a decent bookend and game manager but our youngsters are maturing and the future looks brighter than it has in so many years.

I mentioned earlier in the week in another post that the Storm and Panthers would be vulnerable in their next games after their early season GF rematch, that was a very tough game and I was hoping that the physical side would catch up to the Storm, not forgetting its extremely difficult to get up mentally after such a game the week after, relying on my own personal experiences.

The wet weather also always brings teams closer to each other and in the end it is all about completing your sets, take your scoring chances, minimising your errors, obtaining field position and tackle your backside off.

The stats show we competed in these areas, didn't win any, but were good enough on the day to collect a much needed win. Now the team will have the confidence that they can actually compete with the best, consistency is the key moving forward. Looking forward to our round 5 clash against a desperate Eels team, no pushover.

Can I take an opportunity to blow my own trumpet? I've been saying for about a year Egan is a very good player and should be in the NRL side. From the first hit up yesterday there was nothing doing, he got the ball, surged 15 min, dragging a few of them along, fell on his front, got a quick play the ball. I'm not making him a future immortal just yet but first impressions could hardly be better.

Reminds me of the first time I saw Couchman. Can't remember which it was but from the first hit up, looked like he was really hard to tackle. Purely hypothetical now but Egan should've made his debut before now.

Need to beat the ells or it makes our victory over the storm less significant in a way, they will be desperate as potentially they will 0-4, Lomax will be looking to have a big game and so will Gutho for us, with Guler out, it will again test our middles, does Flano throw in Loko or do we see RFM back in

You've done well. Just relying upon my own experiences the development of young players, future 1st graders is a delicate balance. The number of times as a reserve grade coach that I was approached back in my day and told the kids ready why you holding him back your cruelling him, he will leave to play 1sts for another club, I lost count.

In the end the people in the best position to actually make such decisions lies within your coaching and development group. Its difficult to explain to supporters and other club administrators why you believe now is not the time and on some occasions it can actually cost you your coaching job.

I believe our current coach is the best we have had for at least 7 yrs so I believe that he knows what he is doing. My opinion Egan was not ready for the rigours of 1st grade last season
