NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

SGI NSW Cup
Jersey Flegg Notes (46-10):
  • Took me a while to sum up the courage to watch more footy after last night...
  • Silktails got their first win 'ever' against us earlier in the year, snapping an outrageous field goal to win by 1pt... so great to get this revenge.. the Silktails are big and strong but lots of errors and thats the reason they are in last spot.... and now that we have Reed @7, our team is nothing like the team earlier in the year... and we were just flat out better than them, defended well.. good field position thru Reed, good skill and enough speed, good forwards, even without Meafou who is still injured, and Liu who must have gotten the week off.
  • Hammoud one of our best #6 prospects finally back as 18th man this week, lets hope he gets back in the side soon.. genuine 5/8 competitor to LKT.... its an easy choice imo as TPH is really struggling at 6, so many passes went to ground today including one of the grossest passes that went forward by 45 degrees ive ever seen.. its incredible how much tougher U21s has been for this kid who was very small in U19's but absolutely dominated at that level and was a huge reason we got the SG Ball title in 2024.
  • Reed in jersey #18 is odd.. wonder if he wasnt meant to be playing.. was once again so good today.. full kitbag..
  • CST was down with an injury at one point but stayed on for ages till Langdon took over.. hopefully he is ok, hes crucial to this team... even though hes good enough for NSW Cup.
  • Lyric is once again really thriving on the wing.. a centre who I think wasnt quite up for it, esp over Buchanan and Heidke.. hes rly quick on the wing, pretty athletic.. the odd error, but keen to keep an eye on him, definitely a fan over Toby Rumble.
  • The Reed/Heidke combo is so powerful, they are really in sync.. hope the combo can continue into NSW Cup at some point. Heidke did come off with 20mins to go, but I cant see any injury he had...

Jett Liu ankle injury

Shadi played local footy last week, so easing him back in, hard to change a winning side, although with injuries in teams above and rep duties I can see some shuffling happening.

Cyrus was just winded after big hit up.

Charlie had back issue replacing was just cautionary, heard he will be back up back for NSW so still able to play next week.

Spoke to Tom E he has started work with the boys.

feels like Cyrus/Heidke/Reed are all on the same timeline in their careers.

I mean that in terms of - Can’t see them debuting in 2026 but a large chunk of next year in cup and then potentially involved in first grade for 2027 if they prove they warrant selection

Kade is moving quicker than expected.
At some point this year he needs some Cup games
But it's hard with both teams going well.
We spoke about this today, if Flano ever dropped Kyle for Lachy I would like to see Kyke in dunmy half rotation and Kade, Jonah halfs but more likely have to wait for an injury than Kyke dropoed.

There could ofcourse be an injury or multiple injuries tomorrow or in a months time.. one never knows.. but if everyone is fit.. then yes you would normally think Reed would play atleast a handful of NSW Cup games late season, similar to LKT actually in 2023.

However as Justa said.. as of right now.. you have a Flegg and NSW Cup squad flying with 2 in form halfbacks.. it does seem crazy to change that trajectory... winning is secondary to player development.. but winning very much helps that process.. not to mention playing finals is great practice (Flegg no guarantee to play finals either, but looking promising in a Top 8 finals series I assume).

imo there is no need to change anything right now, unless ofcourse they genuinely think Kade needs to be fast-tracked to the point he just comes up a grade early.. this would be much easier if Ilias or Kyle was no longer in the halves rotation.. potentially you could play Reed/Glover in NSW Cup.. I do actually feel for Glover cause I dont think he could do any more.. hes clearly working on his goalkicking also.. but his ticket almost seems punched before the season kicked off.

I think it would be good for Reed to have a few games in KOE cup this year and next year if all good, give him the whole year in KOE if he is able to handle it.

Wondered the same thing.

Not sure I agree with that. Craft-Te Moananui is also sensational in the air so suited more to wing or even fullback. He could also morph into a centre down the track. Early days for Heidke but reminds me a touch of a young former Saints centre Ken Maddison. Imho, LCT and Heidke are two of our top outside back prospects.

Trust me, Cyrus is that guy. Really talented big man with soft hands.

He reminds me a little bit of Koloamatangi from Souths with the hands and footwork + the ability to play middle and edge

He’s also sneaky athletic, there’s a clip of him in a trial against Balmain this year beating about 4 defenders with his physicality to score

Cyrus and Halangahu I’m very curious to see what position they end up as long term

Halangahu is the prototype for a backrower for the next 7 or 8 years, isn't he? In his last few years he might move to the middle.

Excatly
Cyrus is a slow burner with all the skills, can see him as a middle.
Cyrus and Nick would be perfect bench players middle, edge and fill in at centre.

  • The big in is #4. I guess with a couple of spots in the top 30 free, this means he is one step away from first grade.
  • God knows who the other centre will be.
  • I wonder if Hutchinson is on line to get promoted into the missing prop spot.
  • Ditto for the other second rower.
  • For the most part, for me it's a question of who are they.
  • #17 is obviously one a lot of people have high hopes for.
  • Borg recalled to play centre.
  • I guess that answers my question about Hutchinson. He must be injured.

Very keen to see how Heidke goes at the next level, would be good for one of he or Buchanan to really kick on in the next 12 months

I’m of the belief that outside backs in general are a position where you shouldn’t allocate that much of your salary cap towards and we have a fair amount of money sunk into that area

Penrith hit a golden era with Crichton/To’o/Tago/Turuva/May who gave them value in the salary cap in relation to what they were actually getting paid which obviously allowed them to spend big in the spine + Forwards

Id like us to head down that road over the next 2-3 years and I think we’ve got good value in Atkinson next year at 500k

We’ve got a good foundation with the young forwards who wouldn’t be on much coin
