Recruitment and Retention for 2026

Flanno likes boosting our players confidence by going to the media and praising them smart way in my opinion

but I reckon who ever has the better year out of Joseph O’Neill or Kade Reed will get the nod I can’t see dragons keeping both just my opinion
Has Mr. Flanagan and Co gone a bit negative on Kade Reed? I thought he'd be locked in to start the year as #7 in reserve grade but looks like maybe not. He might be in Flegg.

No way Flanagan. Does this mean he has no plans for Kade Reed to be our long term half.
I'd be spewing if another club was to benefit from Kade's special organising ability.
Given the footage I have seen of Daniel Anderson he looks like a dead set five eighth.
You are echoing my thoughts exactly, unless we could sign someone like Purdue to partner with Reed or Atkinson. Reed does look like a very good organising halfback. A very good playmaker/general.

There aren't many players off contract at the end of this season, who I would want, but I have found an outside back who I like the look of who is off contract at the end of this season. Last season on Youtube I heard or read someone talking about Chris Vea'ila. I looked up his highlights reel and like what I saw. He is a centre/wing who's off contract at the end of this year and is someone I would be very interested in us signing. He has pace, can beat a man on his own, has a good right hand flick pass, competes in the air and can find he try line. I think he could be a strike centre in the making. He has the likes of Iro and Ramien ahead of him at centre right now. Here is his highlights package
"edit", I hadn't seen Leighton Craig's above post before posting this.

The following would be very handy acquisitions. Specially if they could come a year early.
  • Jaxon Purdue
  • Murray Taulagi
  • Jesse Arthars
  • Will Warbrick

  • Dene Mariner
  • Josiah Karapani
  • Jack Bostock
  • Lehi Hopoate
  • Tolutau Koula

I have previously mentioned Jaxon Purdue. He mostly played centre last year and looked excellent. He played in the halves in his juniors. I think he is a future superstar. If I was Flanno or D Anderson, I would be taking a gamble and going 1 mil a season over 4 years to sign him to play in the halves, even up to 1.2 mil. I actually don't think it would be a gamble. He could also make a great fullback, in the Billy Slater mold. I would like the idea of a Reed Purdue set of halves, or Atkinson Purdue. As we all know good halves are very hard to come by. He is mostly training at halfback for Nth Qld. I consider him to be the most exciting prospect I have seen for a long time. Here is his highlights reel playing in the halves

If he is a really good 5/8 but as is right now, you would be paying a million a year for someone who will probably become a very good centre but possibly not one of the best. It'd be a huge gamble.

I was sure NQ had already secured Purdue but you are right, he is currently free to negotiate. He is a real livewire. Fullback might be his ulltimate spot.

Yeah definitely the kid could be anything, honestly I’d rather Tolutau Koula who’s currently better in my opinion but his price tag would probably be too much, so dragons should push for Purdue I reckon.

I would be buying him to play halfback or 5/8 or fullback. 1.2 mil a season is top halfback, 5/8 or fullback money. I am super confident it would pay dividends. If I was Flanno or our coach, I would be betting my job on him. It reminds me of when I first saw Haas play for off the bench and then his 3rd game the next year starting and when I first saw Ponga play his first game for Newy. You watch and see how good he is over the coming years.

Jaxon Purdue would be a good acquisition, but not at $1M. I recall watching a young Jayden Sullivan in reserve grade and thinking he was significantly ahead of the other players, certain he’d become a star halfback. Unfortunately, some players struggle with the jump from reserve grade to first grade, whether it’s the pace, the physicality, or just the overall intensity of the NRL. Talent in the lower grades doesn’t always translate to success at the top level.

I wouldn't mind Koula at fullback. He has speed to burn, but he hasn't been able to take the number 2 fullback spot at Manly, with Hopoate jumping the queue ahead of him. Does he poses the passing game for fullback, that is my question? If we had Purdue in the halves and Koula at fullback, we would have some speed to burn.. Add Jesse Williams and it would be more speed. It reminds me of Phil Gould's line from way back, when he said. "I love speed, give me pure speed, I'll take speed any day of the week"

Sullivan had massive wraps on him after we won, I think it was the SG Ball. He was being touted as the next Johnathon Thurston or compared to Thurston. The biggest difference with Purdue, is if he doesn't make a top halfback or 5/8, I am confident he will make a top fullback and those 3 positions are where we should be spending big.

I wouldn't go a mil a year for Koula though. He was looking good at the end of last year. Was that when he was playing fullback or centre?
A lot of talk about fullback. I think we are fine with Gutho and then should look to replace him with the lower grades fullback. Is it Burton? 16 on extended reserves for Australian schoolboys. If he isn't quite ready, gives Holmes a year at fullback. I think it would be a mistake to sign a potential good fullback to 1mil a year. Reece Walsh is on about 1mil a year.

Burton is nowhere ready for 1st grade in the near future, not even guaranteed to end up as a fullback.
