Recruitment and Retention for 2026

I read this yesterday in regards to an article talking about possible mid season signings and had a laugh, but was also surprised to see what he was on. I thought 500K was bad but 600K. It is an exaggerated example of how poor our recruitment and retention was. It also say's we have been trying to ofload Lawrie for months, when it has been years.

Blake Lawrie

The Dragons have been trying to offload Blake Lawrie for months.

As reported by Danny Weidler and Michael Chammas in August, the club have been trying to get Lawrie's $600,000 a year deal off their books to free up space for a marquee signing.

However, no club has yet to show interest in the 29-year-old.

For the Dragons, it is wasted money.

If the squad is at full strength, Lawrie doesn't make it anywhere near the starting side, only finding himself on the bench due to injuries or suspensions.

So, if another team comes calling for Lawrie, don't expect any resistance from the Saints.

Must be hard turning up for training every day knowing you aren't wanted.

Another of Haran's marvelous deals he was involved in, what is this guy still doing at the Dragons, that is a waste of space.

I think the 600K a season would soften the blow. Many footballers train and play for nothing or little to nothing. I think anyone would love to train with the great facilities and equipment he does. Many people pay memberships to be able to used fitness centres. Some even pay for personal trainers. News is, he is in very good shape, so he looks to be making the most of it. It is like he has won lotto several years "running". Say if he has made 1.6 mil over the last 3 years. The average Australian salary is just over 100 grand a year. At that rate it would take the average Australian 16 years to earn that much money and they probably wouldn't even like their job.

There had to have been others, including Coach and Recruitment officer who were involved and responsible for the contract. Griffin played him a lot. Flanno has hardly played him.

It is like we will have an extra 1.1 mil salary cap space with Lawrie and Slone gone next year. That covers the signing of Koloamatangi on it own with a 100 grand left over.

if Luciano Leilua, Blake Lawrie, Hame Sele, Tyrell Sloan, Damien Cook, Emre Guler all leave end of this season which is probably likely dragons will have over 3.2 million in our salary cap to spend in 2027 minus 1 mil for Keaon that’s still a lot to spend, could we see dragons making a play for bula and taulagi?
add to that Nathan Lawson and Mathew Feagai who could leave aswell

A few might need to be upgraded.

I read on here that the amount of money Lawrie is reported to be on is actually much more than he is actually on. Though can't remember the figures which were mentioned at that time.

I dont think we actually had a recruitment manager, it was Flanno I suppose with Haran as his sidekick. But when Hook was there it was all with Haran, with several F%$k ups to show for it.

DRAGONS

Added a key component in Daniel Atkinson and believe they have unearthed a few hidden gems in David Fale and Setu Tu with the pair competing for a starting wing spot. Still lack a marquee recruit – although that is coming in 2027 after they secured Keaon Koloamatangi.

Rating: C

This is from the DT. I thought for a change, it was very fair. If Atkinson is a good halfback, it'll be B. If not, D.

The talk about Fale & Tu, reminds me of the hype around Lawson. TBH they've been in reserve grade for a reason & unless something in their game improves drastically they'll still perform at that level. My hopes on them are tempered, hope I'm wrong & they gun it.
GC debuted a mid 20s winger last year or maybe the year before. He is actually very good.

Our recruitment for this year is still a mystery. It could go to A or E. Next year will be A.

Still have 3 spots in the top 30. 1 will probably be left open until mid season. Maybe even 2. So I guess there will be at least 1 more signing before the season starts. Those Taulagi rumours seem to have disappeared. So I guess whoever it is, or they are, won't be big names.
