Individual Requirements

SGI NSW Cup
I was just thinking about what we need from the individuals. I don't know about all but for some:

1. Sloan: His attacking skills are well known but the best fullbacks also get their teams on the front foot early in the tackle or whenever. Something Dufty hopelessly failed to do. If Sloan is over 90kg and maintains his speed, he should be able to do that.

1 or 2 or 5. Ramsey: If he is going to play on the wing, he needs to eat and work out a lot. Needs to run harder and get the team going forward like all the half decent wingers can do.

2 or 5. Ravalawa: More of the same but wrap the arm simultaneous with hitting with the shoulder.

2, 5, 3 or 4. Feagai's: They are big, fast and have good skills. Have shown it in glimpses in the NRL but we need it on a regular basis.

3 or 4. Suli: I'm not sure why this guy was recruited. From what I've seen, he is barely NRL standard. I saw another post saying he has to get involved more and work harder. I'll go with that.

3 or 4. Lomax: Stay injury free and keep doing what he has been when injury free.

6. Amone: Be half as good as we think he is. His running game has already been demonstrated. I hope his ball playing is as good.

7. Hunt: It was good to see him do well last year, underline how clueless Paul McGregor was. Need more of that and to stay injury free.

8 or 10. Lawrie: Add more to his game than just running hard and working hard in defence.

8 or 10. Burgess: What he used to do but hopefully a few more minutes.

8 or 10. Woods: A little more tackle breaking along with the long minutes he can play.

8 or 10. Molo: I don't really know. Never really noticed him play.

8, 10 or 13. de Belin: Bring his offload back along with doing the same as he always has.

9. McCullough: We know what we will get with him. Good service from dummy half and hard work in defence. Not a lot in attack. It will have to do. It could be worse. Mitch Rein offered far more in attack but his service was so atrocious, McCullough is far better.

11 or 12. Sims: Keep doing what he does but more consistently.

11 or 12. Su'A: I watched him play for Souffs and thought he was drastically overrated. He needs to prove me wrong.

11 or 12. Fuimaono: Same as last year. Run hard, tackle hard. Maybe he can take leaf out of Sims book and run into gaps a little better. I know that's equally or more dependent on the person passing to him.

11 or 12. Burns: A little bigger, able to run a little harder and he may turn into a really good backrower.

13 or bench. Bird: Hopefully we have seen the last of him in the centres. We need centres a little faster. I read somewhere the idea is to have him play like Cameron Murray. Similar size, Bird may be a little bigger. Bird is probably faster and more skillful. So no reason why he couldn't surpass Murray.

Other. Mbye: A good bench utility but is it worth recruiting a specialized bench utility? Is Griffin not confident in Amone or Sloan? I don't know what Mbye was recruited to do.

Other. Sullivan: Bide his time for another year unless there is an injury to Hunt or Amone and be ready to go in the NRL 2023.

Coach: Show us why Suli and Mbye were recruited. Show us Su'A isn't overrated. Make sure Woods and Burgess turn back the clock.

Too negative on Su'A. As far as I know, he got dropped last year due to going missing. Bennett was making a point that he can't do that. When he was recalled (I think after only 1 week) he was much better.

Mbye is a good depth signing. If Macca goes down, I think Mbye will be hooker.

Woods isn't going to break many tackles. He is going to drag defenders for 5 metres, fall on his front and get a quick play the ball and play long minutes. To expect more from him is unrealistic.

If Bird is going to start in the forwards, assuming that JDB and Lawrie are going to start as props, that pack will be too small.

Not bad. I want to see what the coach is thinking with Bird, Suli, Feagai's, Mbye, Ramsey, Woods, Burgess. Woods and Burgess are only props but why recruit them both? Must have come really cheap. Suli is only a centre but why extend both Feagai's if Suli is the long-term pick? Lomax will be the first one picked if fit.

How long is it since we had a breakout forward? De Belin was in and out for a season or 2 before securing his spot. Mitch Rein was hardly 'breakout'. Merrin was good but I wouldn't class him as breakout either.

Who else has there been? Every one a fringe NRL player or import.

Just on Amone, IMO ball playing ability is most important. If his ball skills aren't excellent, maybe he'd make a good fullback and Sullivan should be 5/8.

Did he make his NRL debut for the Shonkies? He was always overrated anyway.
With a decent coach, Frizell would have been a superstar or close to it. When playing for NSW or Australia he was much better than he was for us.

It was the same for all the players who came from another club or left and went to another club. Much better before coming or after leaving while we suffered Price and McGregor.

I think he was poached before making his debut. May have been set to debut for them, suffered a long term injury and joined us while still injured.

What do we need from these guys in in order to justify resigning?

Off Contract 2022
Daniel Alvaro - Surplus to our needs going forward. Retirement or ESL.

Jack Bird - Nice to keep him but not on big money.

Billy Burns - I think he has potential. Needs to show I'm right on a regular basis it or bye.

Poasa Faamausili - Surplus to our needs.

Jackson Ford - If he were 10cm taller and 15kg heavier, best backrower in the comp. Unfortunately he isn't. No opinion on keeping him or not.

Jack Gosiewski - Surplus to our needs.

Blake Lawrie - Every team needs a hard working, metre eater on minimal money. Unless he can an offload to his arsenal, worth keeping on minimal money. I guess it depends on how Woods and Burgess go and who else we could recruit or produce to replace him.

Josh McGuire - Surplus to our needs going forward. Retirement or ESL.

Tautau Moga - Can't see him in the NRL this season. Surely behind Lomax, Suli and both Feagai's. Surplus to our needs going forward. Retirement or ESL.

Shalom Oofou - Hopefully he gets a chance sooner rather than later so we can make an accurate judgement.

Tariq Sims - It would depend on how long he wants, how much money, how Burns and Oofou progress, how Bird is in the forwards and whether or not he is resigned. In a perfect world we'd be able to keep him for another year.

He inherited a club in a mess, obviously with a lack of good forwards either in the squad or coming though the juniors. I'd like to see him extended for another year and then if there isn't good progress in 2023, look elsewhere.

Alvaro is the only one I'd put a line through at this stage. McGuire is ok. Gets the team going forward reasonably well but if he can't stop getting suspended.........

I was just thinking about what St George Illawarra Dragons need from the individuals.

The faster game might suit Jackson Ford. He might surprise a few people and be a regular in the 17.

Not much news about anything going on with the pre-season for St George. I guess no news is good news. Burns twisted his ankle before Christmas. After Christmas several players caught rona. That's about the extent of it. At least according to what I've heard.

No news is good news:cool:. No one died of Covid. Even Craig Young is ok.

Pretty slow today. Can't wait for the season to start! I'm going to upgrade this based on what I've heard or read since I compiled it.

1. Sloan: His attacking skills are well known but the best fullbacks also get their teams on the front foot early in the tackle or whenever. Something Dufty hopelessly failed to do.
(He also needs to position himself better much better than Dufty. I'd add that he should look and and emulate the work ethnic of the top fullbacks. But no much as Gutherson at Parramatta with his 40 hit-ups a game. )

1 or 2 or 5. Ramsey: If he is going to play on the wing, he needs to eat and work out a lot. Needs to run harder and get the team going forward like all the half decent wingers can do.
(He has eaten more and gained a lot of muscle, according to Hook. He may well turn into a really good winger if he has the power to make good metres in the first or second hit-up after kicks. )

2 or 5. Ravalawa: More of the same but wrap the arm simultaneous with hitting with the shoulder.
(No change to this.)

2, 5, 3 or 4. Feagai's: They are big, fast and have good skills. Have shown it in glimpses in the NRL but we need it on a regular basis.
(no change. I had one of them penciled in for a winger to start the year but it seems Hook is going to go with Ramsey.)

3 or 4. Suli: I'm not sure why this guy was recruited. From what I've seen, he is barely NRL standard. I saw another post saying he has to get involved more and work harder. I'll go with that.
(no change other than he appears to be a certainty to start the year in the centres now so Hook must have a plan to get the best out of him.)

3 or 4. Lomax: Stay injury free and keep doing what he has been when injury free.
(no change. Looking at pre-season photos, he seems to have gotten significantly bigger. We know he is going to create space for Ravalawa but it'd be nice if he busted more tackles himself along with setting up Rav.)

6. Amone: Be half as good as we think he is. His running game has already been demonstrated. I hope his ball playing is as good.
(no change)

7. Hunt: It was good to see him do well last year, underline how clueless Paul McGregor was. Need more of that and to stay injury free.
(no change but if the attack is faltering in the first half of the season, he may have to move to hooker to make way for Sullivan.)

8 or 10. Lawrie: Add more to his game than just running hard and working hard in defence.
(no change)

8 or 10. Burgess: What he used to do but hopefully a few more minutes.
(no change)

8 or 10. Woods: A little more tackle breaking along with the long minutes he can play.
(and offloads. Not so much before the line like de Belin but in the tackles.)

(just a little more in attack would be nice. He's had an entire off season with the team now so that shouldn't be too difficult.)

11 or 12. Sims: Keep doing what he does but more consistently.
(no change)

11 or 12. Su'A: I watched him play for Souffs and thought he was drastically overrated. He needs to prove me wrong.
(other posters seem to have a high opinion of him. I hope they are right.)

11 or 12. Fuimaono: Same as last year. Run hard, tackle hard. Maybe he can take leaf out of Sims book and run into gaps a little better. I know that's equally or more dependent on the person passing to him.
(no change)

11 or 12. Burns: A little bigger, able to run a little harder and he may turn into a really good backrower.
(he is off contract and no one seems to be in a hurry to resign him so, it's up to him to be a little better in everything than he was last year.)

13 or bench. Bird: Hopefully we have seen the last of him in the centres. We need centres a little faster. I read somewhere the idea is to have him play like Cameron Murray. Coach: Show us why Suli and Mbye were recruited. Show us Su'A isn't overrated. Make sure Woods and Burgess turn back the clock.
(a little outside the box thinking. Some new attacking moves and things like that. I feel that would suite Amone and Sloan.)

Good job✌️. Need to update it as the season goes on for more of the top 30. McGuire for example is missing.

Jacksion Ford and Jack Gosiewski: When you get a chance, the new rules should help smaller forwards coming off the bench. Prove it and earn another contract.
