I'm sold on 4 front-rowers as well. At least for the opening few rounds when it might be time to reassess. It'll be nice to have McGuire ready to come back so the four of Burgess, Woods, Lawrie, Molo are trying to out-do each other in the first few rounds or face the prospect of being dropped. It does make sense to hace 4 big guys smashing it up the middle for the entire game provided they have the stamina to properly do their job on hte other side of the ball. That might be an achilles heel for Burgess in particular.
I like the idea (4 props) as well but I wouldn't be so quick to pencil it in for round 1. After around 30min, don't you think a smaller quicker guy like Jack Bird migh be able to make better better metres than a bigger, slower guy? And in defence, after around 30min Bird will definitely be better. And Bird is just an example. Jackson Ford and Fuimaono are others.

Both strategies should be tried in the trails.
I like both these ideas. Can we demand the NRL gives us an extra player for the next 2 years to make up for the De Belin debarcle?

On a serious note, maybe it (bigger slower pack vs small faster pack) will depend on the opposition. Or maybe a ploy to change regularly until the finals (crosses fingers) to keep the other teams off balance.

If you can't get 20 min each half from professional 1st graders then they shouldn't be playing 1sts. Out of the 4 Burgess is the most likely to pick up an injury due to his operation and time off from playing. Ball retention will be crucial because defensively he will be lacking.
I remember now. One of those Burgess twins used to have hands like feet. I'm not worried about it. Hook will hook him if this is the one and it's still true.

That's actually not a bad idea (changing heavier packs for lighter more mobile packs on a regular basis) in theory but after a few weeks we are probably going to see one or the other prove more effective and I don't think even the most fanatical fan will say we will be able to afford to not use our best 17 on a regular basis.

Not bad. I want to see what the coach is thinking with Bird, Suli, Feagai's, Mbye, Ramsey, Woods, Burgess. Woods and Burgess are only props but why recruit them both? Must have come really cheap. Suli is only a centre but why extend both Feagai's if Suli is the long-term pick? Lomax will be the first one picked if fit.
If you are looking at the right edge Sua is going to hurt the opposition in defence and if your right centre is the ex manly player Suli he can hurt you in attack thats a good combination to me. Same left edge Debelin in defence and of course Lomax in attack again very good combination because in my view you need to have the ability to continuously hurt the opposition with or without the ball. I really do believe that Bird needs to touch the ball more and thats possible with him in the pack so lock or 2nd rower because he has the ability to set up our 2nd phase play something we have lacked the last few seasons. If that is the case then we can only have the 3 prop rotation and that has to be Molo Woods and Burgess.

Josh McGuire: Pick up from where you left off last year, hopefully better with more support from the rest of the pack. Keep getting under the skin of the other teams but not so much that he keeps getting suspended.

Jacksion Ford and Jack Gosiewski: When you get a chance, the new rules should help smaller forwards coming off the bench. Prove it and earn another contract.
Well Mcguire won't be there until round 6 then back from the bench so I'm leaning towards Molo McCullough Woods Debelin Sua and Bird lock lets see what 1st trial against Parramatta reveals

This is why I couldn't be a coach. I can't agree or disagree because I only consider the best players, not right edge vs left and things like that.

A lot of how much damage the edges will do will depend on Hunt, Amone and Sloan. Sloan has great ball skills. That's known. Amone is no slouch with his ball skills but his running game is his biggest asset.

I didn't see myself but heard Amone had very good ball skills in the juniors. A complete package.

I saw. Very good but maybe overshadowed by his running game. I don't see it as a problem because his playmaking certainly isn't bad so if he keeps the opposition guessing with ball in hand and then passes, the guys outside him will have overlaps or other opportunities on a regular basis. Rather than the veritable brick wall they have usually faced over the last few years.

Interesting thought but in my experience if the engine room is not rolling forward even you most talented players cant show their best. We most definitely need more 2nd phase attack this year and Woods should be an asset in that area bending the line and offloading then the edge and backs come into their own. Weve got to own or at the very least compete in the middle of the park in my humble view

That's why I was thinking and learning toward a smaller, more mobile pack with only 3 specialist props but I've now come around to 4 specialist props. But my original idea still has merits. I think Hook will, or at least should, try both in the trails.

Before the team is named tomorrow and competition begins on Thursday, I thought it might be time to update this based on what has happened in the trails.

1. Sloan: His attacking skills are well known but the best fullbacks also get their teams on the front foot early in the tackle or whenever. Something Dufty hopelessly failed to do.
(He also needs to position himself better much better than Dufty. I'd add that he should look and and emulate the work ethnic of the top fullbacks. But no much as Gutherson at Parramatta with his 40 hit-ups a game. )

Judging by the trials, my fear that the opposition would manhandle him like they did Dufty were absolutely unfounded. He runs hard and often falls on his front when tackled. Still only 19. Will put on some more kgs yet.

1 or 2 or 5. Ramsey: If he is going to play on the wing, he needs to eat and work out a lot. Needs to run harder and get the team going forward like all the half decent wingers can do.
(He has eaten more and gained a lot of muscle, according to Hook. He may well turn into a really good winger if he has the power to make good metres in the first or second hit-up after kicks. )

Did those things well in the trials. Has noticeably put on a number of kgs.

2 or 5. Ravalawa: More of the same but wrap the arm simultaneous with hitting with the shoulder.
(No change to this.)

Still no change.

2, 5, 3 or 4. Feagai's: They are big, fast and have good skills. Have shown it in glimpses in the NRL but we need it on a regular basis.
(no change. I had one of them penciled in for a winger to start the year but it seems Hook is going to go with Ramsey.)

No change. One is obviously out with injury for at least 2 months and the other will start in the NSW Cup but showed a lot of promise in the trials.

3 or 4. Suli: I'm not sure why this guy was recruited. From what I've seen, he is barely NRL standard. I saw another post saying he has to get involved more and work harder. I'll go with that.
(no change other than he appears to be a certainty to start the year in the centres now so Hook must have a plan to get the best out of him.)

He was really good in the trails. Seems to have dropped a few kgs.

3 or 4. Lomax: Stay injury free and keep doing what he has been when injury free.
(no change. Looking at pre-season photos, he seems to have gotten significantly bigger. We know he is going to create space for Ravalawa but it'd be nice if he busted more tackles himself along with setting up Rav.)

No change.

6. Amone: Be half as good as we think he is. His running game has already been demonstrated. I hope his ball playing is as good.
(no change)

No change.

7. Hunt: It was good to see him do well last year, underline how clueless Paul McGregor was. Need more of that and to stay injury free.
(no change but if the attack is faltering in the first half of the season, he may have to move to hooker to make way for Sullivan.)

Well, he won't play hooker. At least, he is fourth in line.

8 or 10. Lawrie: Add more to his game than just running hard and working hard in defence.
(no change)

no change.

8 or 10. Burgess: What he used to do but hopefully a few more minutes.
(no change)

Went ok in the trials, specially the Charity Shield.

8 or 10. Woods: A little more tackle breaking along with the long minutes he can play.
(and offloads. Not so much before the line like de Belin but in the tackles.)

Was a standout in the Charity Shield.

8 or 10. Molo: I don't really know. Never really noticed him play.
(no change)

Worst player on the field in the first trial. Much better in the Charity Shield.

8, 10 or 13. de Belin: Bring his offload back along with doing the same as he always has.
(no change)

No change. He did offload in the Charity Shield.

9. McCullough: We know what we will get with him. Good service from dummy half and hard work in defence. Not a lot in attack. It will have to do. It could be worse. Mitch Rein offered far more in attack but his service was so atrocious, McCullough is far better.
(just a little more in attack would be nice. He's had an entire off season with the team now so that shouldn't be too difficult.)

Had a few good darts out of dummy half on the back of strong runs from the front rowers.

11 or 12. Sims: Keep doing what he does but more consistently.
(no change)

Obviously no change.

11 or 12. Su'A: I watched him play for Souffs and thought he was drastically overrated. He needs to prove me wrong.
(other posters seem to have a high opinion of him. I hope they are right.)

Not many minutes so can't really comment much based on the trials. Obviously considered a certainty for selection.

11 or 12. Fuimaono: Same as last year. Run hard, tackle hard. Maybe he can take leaf out of Sims book and run into gaps a little better. I know that's equally or more dependent on the person passing to him.
(no change)

Was an unfortunate accident. Wasn't much in it but for the severity of the injury meaning he was always going to cop a significant suspension.

11 or 12. Burns: A little bigger, able to run a little harder and he may turn into a really good backrower.
(he is off contract and no one seems to be in a hurry to resign him so, it's up to him to be a little better in everything than he was last year.)

Obviously been injured. Off contract this year and no rush to re-sign him. Seems to be on the outer.

13 or bench. Bird: Hopefully we have seen the last of him in the centres. We need centres a little faster. I read somewhere the idea is to have him play like Cameron Murray. Similar size, Bird may be a little bigger. Bird is probably faster and more skillful. So no reason why he couldn't surpass Murray.
(no change)

Barring an injury crisis, he won't be in the centres and given his contract status, seems the staff don't think so highly of him as a forward.

Other. Mbye: A good bench utility but is it worth recruiting a specialized bench utility? Is Griffin not confident in Amone or Sloan? I don't know what Mbye was recruited to do.
(seems he may have been recruited as mainly a backup hooker.)

Was solid in the first trial. Correct me if I'm wrong but was injured for the Charity Shield.

Other. Sullivan: Bide his time for another year unless there is an injury to Hunt or Amone and be ready to go in the NRL 2023.
(no change unless the attack sux in the first half of the season in which case he may be parachuted into play halfback this year)

Coach: Show us why Suli and Mbye were recruited. Show us Su'A isn't overrated. Make sure Woods and Burgess turn back the clock.
(a little outside the box thinking. Some new attacking moves and things like that. I feel that would suite Amone and Sloan.)

Jack Gosiewski: Who is he? A 27 year-old, less than 100kg backrower was probably, or was almost certainly, our best player across both trials. He'll get a chance in the NRL at some stage this year.

Jaiyden Hunt: After Gosiewski, was probably our second best across both games. I guess he'll get a shot in the NRL sooner rather than later.

Josh McGuire: We'll, he's not a halfback or hooker but if there are no injuries in the forwards by the time round 6 comes around, there will be huge competition for the starting middle forwards coming from McGuire.

Disagree I thought he went well last season in a good Manly pack and went well for us this season. His attitude certainly was better than a few players in the 2 games so far. I cant see him starting initially he will come on and replace either Debelin, Sua or Bird depending which of the three is not playing up to expectations. Isnt it wonderful this season that so many players are vying for every position, that means competition within the team and that has always been a very good thing in my humble view
