2024 Round 1 Team

What I hope for:
  1. Sloan (after a baking and warning from Flanno that if he doesn't get more involved consistently and doesn't tackle much better, he might as well pack his bags.)
  2. Rava
  3. Lomax (vc)
  4. Tamale
  5. Finau
  6. Amone
  7. Herring or King-Togia
  8. Lawrie
  9. Liddle
  10. Couchman
  11. Su'a
  12. Suli
  13. JDB (c)

  14. Couchman
  15. Coric
  16. Bird (I know this will upset some but I think as an interchange utility, he has value in the 17)
  17. M. Molo (hard worker. Isn't a game breaker but doesn't let anyone down.)

  18. Tsougranis or Egan who will probably both be on development contracts.

Not sure about Suli. Why try and turn him into a backrower instead of promoting a very talented young backrower, like Tsougranis or Egan or going to the market for a backrower?

He also said the kid is a rare talent. That baking is to scare him into fixing his flaws. He will be more involved in the halves Flanno.

Because Suli is already on the books on very decent money anyway. So why not give it a try? If he was off contract, I'd be in favour of not resigning him.
Not at $600K he hasnt. Not worth half that. We ask good players to go yet keep Bird and BMM, effing unbelievable.
I agree with that. No way I'd want him re-signed for anything close to that if at all. But he is so may as well use him if we can.
We need to upgrade Blocka ($480K) or he may walk.

Needs to hit the gym and pile on 5/10ks of bulk. Flanno needs to get him in the halves with his mate and put Zac at the back.
Not sure about Lawrie. Coric did his ACL in a pre season trial but I think he might offer more than Lawrie from next year. Still a place for Lawrie in the team but I wouldn't be upgrading him.

Agree about Slaon.

I rate Suli in the backrow. But I had hoped it would have already happened. From next year I think both the players you nominated at #18 might be better.

I hope Coric goes well. Very skillful but is he tough enough or another Jackson Shereb?

It appears almost certain Hunt is staying. I guess that means they don't rate Zach Herring. Another Beau Henry or Drew Hutchinson. Both were stars in the lower grades, couldn't make it in first grade. So I think:
  1. Sloan
  2. Rava
  3. Lomax (vc)
  4. Tamale
  5. Finau
  6. Amone
  7. Hunt (c) I don't like it but that's how it will be.
  8. Lawrie
  9. Liddle
  10. Luke Thompson
  11. Su'a
  12. Suli (I'd also like to see Suli get a chance in the backrow so in the absence of an obvious replacement, I'll leave him here for now.)
  13. JDB

  14. Couchman
  15. Coric (Looking forward to seeing what he can do.)
  16. Bird (trains over the off season to cover around 15min per game at dummy half.)
  17. Couchman

  18. Tsougranis or Egan who will probably both be on development contracts.

I'm just wondering if it would be advisable or even possible to not go after any big names but to load up on the best young players from other clubs. Clubs which have loaded up, paying overs for established big names along with clubs which have spent big money keeping it's current squad largely together. Thinking Bulldogs specifically for the former and Penrith, NQ for the latter. Of course Roosters, who are a combination of the two never have salary cap issues and Melbourne don't really have any juniors.

Because the club already has a cadre of veterans or proven first graders. Especially if Hunt is staying. Hunt and JDB are veterans. Suli, Su'a, Lomax, Lawrie, Rava have been in first grade for a long time. Liddle has been in and out of first grade for a while.

It's better to concentrate on who the top 30 will be. I'm going to have a go even though I'm sure there are some who I'll miss.
  1. Luke Thompson (Seems we are the only ones interested in his services so surely it'll happen.)
  2. Toby Couchman
  3. Ryan Couchman
  4. Savelio Tamale
  5. Josh Coric
  6. Hame Sele
  7. Ben Hunt
  8. Blake Lawrie
  9. Cody Ramsey
  10. Francis Molo
  11. Jack de Belin
  12. Sione Finau
  13. Jack Bird
  14. Connor Muhleisen or Declan Purcell
  15. Jacob Liddle
  16. Jaydn Su’A
  17. Matt Feagai (wouldn't surprise me if one or both Feagai's are tapped on the shoulder before round 1 next year)
  18. Max Feagai
  19. Michael Molo
  20. Mikaele Ravalawa
  21. Moses Suli
  22. Talatau Amone
  23. Tyrell Sloan
  24. Zac Lomax
  25. Viliami Fifita
  26. Dylan Egan or Nicholas Tsougranis (with the one who doesn't make it on a development contract.)
Already it's shaping us as a much stronger squad.

That's an excellent balance of youth and experience!
But one thing it's most certainly lacking is injury cover for Hunt and Amone. I think it must be Herring promoted to the top 30.

I think this is a little too heavy on juniors. I like the idea but no way. Not in one season. Though hard to see who will miss out. I think No. 26 might both be on development contracts. No. 12 or No. 4 will be on a development contract as well. They might both be.

Just putting my old hat on again Don't be surprised to see a different backline next season. I'll throw this out there, barring injuries and just reading between the lines and obviously if we are successful in our targeted signings.

1. Lomax
2. Sloan/Finau
3. Suli
4. Alamoti (Dogs)
5. Rav
6. Amone
7. Hunt (cpt)
8. Lawrie
9. Liddle
10. Sele
11. Sua
12. Bird
13. Debelin
14. Thompson (Dogs)
15. Molo
16. Feigai/Tamale
17. T Couchman

My mate tells me Sullivan is gone and we won't have to stump up any of his salary meaning we should have a bit over $1m to spend in 24.

No Su'a in the second row?
