Time for Young to give gametime in first grade to more lower grade/junior players for the rest of the year. He has had the same side in the main ever since he took over from Flanno and results as you know have been poor with only one game won. If the Board is waiting for him to get another win to announce his appointment officially then I hope we don't win another game this year. We should start afresh with several new players and new coaching beginning in November.

Call me crazy, but I think we win this week vs the tigers at Kogarah. Can see our forwards doing some damage. Feeling in my tum tums

Surely it'd be better for Young to experience coaching in a winning culture. Like say the Panthers, Warriors, Roosters etc. Taking the head coach job at our club after being part of the losing culture seems pretty narrow minded.

You are not crazy R redv13. Nice to be positive in a way. My concern is that this will be Douiehi's second game back and Api won't be in SOO. Our forwards will dominate but our halves won't and that is where our problems lie. They beat us convincingly in Round 2 this year and beat us in Magic Round last year as well. Hopefully we will turn the tables on them at Kogarah on Saturday evening.

My biggest concern with this bloody coaching saga is that there is just no-one of any greatness wanting to coach the Dragons except non great Young and maybe Hornby - hooray and yippee. That is what I see our problems are. There is absolutely no-one wanting to coach us because we are a too hard basket of a club with the Board that we have and the dramas that anybody outside of the Club (Hornby played for us so he knows the system) will have to endure.

No-one is prepared to take up on the challenge of coaching us except Young and Hornby.

Which coaches do you think are great? Only those under contract and/or retiring. WT has proven to be a great coach in the lower grades but I prefer the idea of bringing someone in from outside and using WT as an assistant for now.

The leading coaches of today that could be considered great or the best both here and in the Super League in my opinion are:-
Super League:
  • Matt Peet (Wigan Warriors): Highly rated as the most accomplished young coach in the Northern Hemisphere, leading Wigan to major trophies including the 2026 World Club Challenge.
  • Sam Burgess (Warrington Wolves): Transitioning seamlessly into the top coaching ranks, Burgess has shown tactical brilliance and a strong win percentage in his tenure at Warrington.
  • Brad Arthur (Leeds Rhinos): Brings a wealth of high-level experience to the Super League and boasts a formidable win percentage with his current club.
  • Paul Rowley (Salford Red Devils): Widely respected for consistently punching above his weight and out-coaching wealthier Super League rosters with limited resources.
National Rugby League (NRL)
  • Craig Bellamy (Melbourne Storm): Universally regarded as the benchmark for sustained excellence, Bellamy has been a masterclass in consistency, keeping Melbourne at the top of the ladder for almost two decades.
  • Ivan Cleary (Penrith Panthers): The mastermind behind Penrith's modern dynasty and so far winning 4 premierships. He is widely recognized for his high winning strike-rate and player development.
  • Wayne Bennett (Dolphins / South Sydney Rabbitohs): The most experienced and successful coach in the modern era, known for his elite man-management and ability to get the best out of any roster.
  • Trent Robinson (Sydney Roosters): A multiple premiership winner who consistently ensures his squad plays an expansive, finals-caliber brand of rugby.
  • Andrew Webster (NZ Warriors): Joined as head coach in 2023. Previously served as a highly successful assistant coach for the Penrith Panthers, helping them secure the 2021 and 2022 NRL premierships. Won the Dally M Coach of the Year award in his debut season (2023) after guiding the team to a top-four regular-season finish.
  • Willie Peters: (Proposed HC of PNG Chiefs): Transitioned to coaching by serving as an assistant at Manly Sea Eagles, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Newcastle Knights. Enjoyed massive success in the English Super League, leading Hull Kingston Rovers to a historic treble (Super League Grand Final, Challenge Cup, and League Leaders' Shield) and a World Club Challenge victory over the Brisbane Broncos. Served as assistant coach for the Australian Kangaroos and was appointed as the inaugural head coach for the NRL's PNG Chiefs.
No doubt there are many others that I have not been able to remember but I do remember one other and that is Billy Slater who is destined to join the Melbourne Storm either next year or the year after (2027 or 2028). https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/0b8b5e29dcb2b2705998d8545b5de419

Willie Talau has been a very good coach in the lower grades at the Dragons and he has plenty of knowledge on the juniors coming through. He and Aaron Gorrell have bright futures and I would like to think that with their experiences and knowledge of the modern game, they could one day be Head Coaches.

As I said, I don't think that any of the above would want the job and I would like to add that I don't think that any of them has been approached to coach us, not even Brad Arthur.

Anyway, sorry for this long post. Just had a bit of time to research a few things to put on. This is the sort of thing that the CEO and others at the Club would or should have drawn up and those named approached to see if they would coach us with high remuneration on offer. They then can say unequivocably to us fans that they did their due diligence .

Never hear of him.

Seems a bit soon. Needs to prove himself a bit more.
  • Brad Arthur (Leeds Rhinos): Brings a wealth of high-level experience to the Super League and boasts a formidable win percentage with his current club.
Extended his stay just several weeks ago. No get-out clause as far as I know.

Both retiring. Cleary not retiring completely but as a head coach.

Surely this will be his last contract he is one now for another 2 years after this.

Won't leave their current clubs.

Isn't he already confirmed for PNG?

Yes Peters has been appointed the coach of the Chiefs. He will take up the post in 2028.

All I have shown are guys that are current or will be coaches in both hemisphere's Rugby League clubs that I consider to be great coaches. I know that all are tied to their current clubs so not much chance of getting them to the Dragons and Slater will eventually end up at the Storm.

Looks like it will be either Young or Hornby for us and we will have to grin and bear it.:(

tail wags dog - they know that young will be appointed so want to ensure they remain on the good side of him by pushing his barrow.
I keep reading Deano is a done deal. I have no reason to think the people saying it are wrong but just can't accept the club is that amateurish. He has shown he isn't a good coach since taking over and showed before that, at a couple of clubs, he isn't even a good assistant coach.

well that may be hard as no one in Cup were pushing for selection ...
Could end up with Fale back on the wing with Holmes back to centre.

I think Todd Payten was happy to say goodbye Deano. Blake Green and Paul Wellens are Payten's assistants now and they have been more successful than Deano was. The thing is Deano is well liked by the playing group and are now coming good. They all look forward to training under his lead moreso than having Flanno. If it is out of Deano or Hornby, I think Deano will get the gig. It will be much easier to coach a team containing better players, which is somewhat of an obvious statement. Young to me might get better results when Daniel Anderson culls the team of deadwood and signs up a couple more fast and strong externals and re-signs several of the young ones we have to complete our squad to compete in 2027 and onwards.

There is no-one readily available. I will not be happy if they approach Madge Maguire if he is on the outer at the Broncos. Our players will not perform under him.
