Coach Griffin

There is a negative side to being successful in the NRL.The more you win, the more other clubs try to pinch your talent. The Cowboys’ resurgence this year has rival clubs looking not just at their players, but the coaches. Not just Todd Payten, an early favourite for Dally M coach-of-the-year, but his assistant Dean Young.

Young’s primary charter – as defensive coach – has produced results unheard of in recent times. Prior to this weekend’s round, the Cowboys have only conceded 10 second-half points in their last eight games. In six of those second halves they have not conceded a point.

It says a lot about their off-season, their fitness, their technique and their structures. Overall, they have the second-best defence in the NRL, behind only reigning premiers Penrith. The former Dragons premiership-winning hooker has been mentioned as a long-term replacement for Anthony Griffin, and other clubs are now on the lookout for new coaches.

Young is now 38, a similar age to when the Roosters gave Trent Robinson a start.

I was a huge fan of this guy. He bled red and white. Should have won the Clive Churchill medal in the GF and I'm glad he is going well as a coach but I hope this isn't true! The part about him replacing Griffin. The record with old boys becoming coaches is scary bad!

Anthony Griffin under pressure as Dragons future clouded by crunch board meeting

Dragons coach Anthony Griffin is under pressure ahead of a crunch board meeting on Tuesday after the heavy 54-26 defeat to the Roosters amid concerns he has lost some of the dressing room.

Pressure is mounting on Griffin ahead of the board meeting following back-to-back losses to the Broncos and Roosters conceding 86 points in the last fortnight. There are reportedly sections of the Dragons dressing room who do not agree with parts of Griffin’s coaching methodology.

There is also reportedly angst in the playing squad over special treatment of Griffin’s former Broncos players Ben Hunt, Andrew McCullough and Josh McGuire. There is a concern at the club over the lack of development in exciting youngsters Jayden Sullivan, Talatau Amone and Tyrell Sloan, while Zac Lomax hasn’t improved despite signing a lucrative long-term deal.

Another concern is the fact the Dragons have the worst defence in the competition. The Dragons were criticised for extending Griffin’s contract through until the end of 2023 before this season after he failed to make the finals last year. Griffin has won just 16 of 41 games since succeeding Paul McGregor in 2021. It was reported earlier this year that the Dragons would be willing to pull the trigger on sacking Griffin and handing him a payout of $475,000, if they no longer believe he is the right man to coach the team.

The board meeting will put the Dragons and Griffin’s performance under the microscope ahead of their must-win clash against Manly with the Dragons currently in 11th place two points off the Sea Eagles in eighth place.

What have we been banging on about?
  • Hook's inherent bias for his storied Broncos U20s team of 15 years ago.
  • The defence.
  • Lack of improvement in the highly touted young players, Amone, Sullivan, Sloan.
Exactly what the front office is concerned about.

Yeehah, hallelujah, fantastic. About bloody time. Sack the dud.

..plus ten of thousands of loyal RedV supporters that dont agree with his baffling coaching methodology either. Specially his continual playing favorites with his Bronco pup mates while neglecting the development of some of our club's best young local talent by hiding them in the lower grades. Do other clubs do this. I doubt it.

There is our new defensive coach father Craig. Make it happen. Deano is a Dragon down to his boot straps.
I was a huge fan of Dean Young. He was the epitome of a "club man" and a great player as well. But look at the record we have with ex players as coach. I wish Dean Young well and a lot of success as long as long as it doesn't take success away from the Dragons. But I wish it for him elsewhere. At least for now.

Talking about Deano becoming our defensive coach Eric.. not head coach. He could do a better job standing on his head than Gentle.

Would definitely do a better job than Gentle but I presume he won't leave where he is unless it's for the head coach position. But if he was willing to come and be the defence coach, that would be a huge victory for the club.

His treatment of McCullough and McGuire is mind-boggling! They were good players in their day. But their day has passed. Why is the coach seemingly the only person on the planet who can't see this?

while Zac Lomax hasn’t improved despite signing a lucrative long-term deal.
We saw what Zac is capable of when his nifty footwork beat three defenders to score his try.
As well as a new head and defense coach we also need fresh ideas for out attack. Now who can we lure here to fit that role?

That's the million dollar question. Flanagan will surely be appointed head coach. He probably has some ideas. Maybe John Morris? What is Matt Heads position within the coaching staff?

Flanagan as head coach and one assistant being John Morris sounds good but isn't John Morris already employed as an assistant somewhere?

The issue here is and I have it on very good authority that Flanagan still has that peptides issue from the Sharks still forefront in clubs boardrooms minds and nobody at the moment wants to take him on. Perhaps the only other premiership winning coach Paul Green may be an alternative?

No thanks for Paul Green. Villame Kikau, Kaylan Ponga and Brandon Smith were among the Cowboys juniors Paul Green didn't rate.

Our joy was short lived with Dragons head honcho Craig Young ruling out sacking Griffin before his tenure is up at end of next season. "we have complete faith in Hook"" he told the media. Why Albert. 14 piddling wins from 41 starts.. starting to lose the dressing room, which Albert as you know, is, the players are losing confidence in their coach.
