That’s just an absolutely insane deal, could put them in purgatory for the length of the contract

He’s had more hits than misses though, signed most of that dolphins squad when recruiting in such a short time period was almost impossible

That’s why it’s such a fine balance to not overpay but still offer enough to convince a player to sign

Never forget our Corey Norman overpay 🕊️

heads had to roll after that one

Agree, that dolphin squad was insane.. I dont think the Bears have much chance of pulling off anything similar..

But POS is a very smart operator, so I cant help but wonder whether he realises something we dont in terms of the changing recruitment market.. or sees something in Brown we dont.. I think there are some clauses to end it early but its still gonna be incredibly long. Could also be desperation around keeping Ponga, and after missing Pezet, but POS doesnt seem like the desperate type..

Wouldn't surprise me if Ponga is gone within 2 years

I heard Gus talking about some interesting statistics regarding finals games and halves

The intensity is higher and halves tend to have to run more with all the rivals study of shape teams have run through the season

Go look at the premium halves in prelim finals and grand finals. Their run metres are much higher and they rely on their running game to break games ope

See game 3 of state of origin last year, the only 2 tries of the game were from a Luai linebreak before assisting Best and then Mitch Moses running and breaking 3 tackles to score

While I think it’s an awful deal that Newcastle made, I get the idea behind why they’ve done it considering the salary cap will rise steadily over the next decade

I don’t mind clubs taking a swing rather than being stuck in purgatory and being content with finishing 7th-12th

Newcastle took a big gamble paying ponga huge money at such a young age in 2018 and it paid off

Plenty of people thought Newcastle were fools to make that Ponga deal also.. even though in hindsight it seems obvious.. but it was risky... I remember Ponga was coming thru at the same time as Dufty, only Ponga also hit hard in defence... that was the main difference I saw early.. actually AJ Brimson was similar in that regard.. also tenacious in D.. but which of them was going to be one of the games premiere players.. very hard to tell at that age...

But like you said, you need to take a swing at something.. its why losing Latu sux.. im pretty sure we have a whole bunch of first grade forwards coming through, but I think he might be the AFB of the batch.. the way he is rolling up the grades so quickly.... now the dogs get to take the swing instead..

Ponga is certainly a supersatar but having one superstar on their list next year might be good for them. Doubt but possible,

Do you think the halves run as much if their forwards are not given them the space to do so, without it no matter how good of a running game you have, you wont be going forward, but i get what Gus is getting at you also find (it seems) that SOO and Semi's are played at a faster rate, quicker play the balls, giving your halves more opportunity to tun at a retreating defence as well ..
I spoke to a current coach a while back, just talking about shape etc, he said all team run the basically the same shapes with slight variations depending on what they did previously and you will notice a lot of teams run a diamond shape off the first receiver, just depends who gets the ball whether it comes back inside goes outside, goes to the player running out the back or first receiver runs it, some will keep going out the back then next time they run the play, will go back to the inside man and hope they catch the defence out..
The 2 trys that that the dogs scored at the end, both those plays are also standard OzTag plays as well, that most teams do, X plays off the 1st or 2nd receiver, to catch the lazy or overzealous defender and exploit the holes left around the ruck, a good running player can exploit those situations..

100%, pissing them off or hard to negotiate with, in their terms would be sucking the life out of a club that is now desperate to have some form of success. As was quoted, money is the main game !!

💯 correct even back in my day it was basically the same. Some coaches would come up with trick plays and some successful some not. But basically it was similar structures.

Those 2 Bulldogs tries at the end were scored where? Right down the middle.

Lazy or more realistically at those points of the game fatigued forwards in both cases it was Radley, he was just unable to keep up with the quicker more evasive backs.

In saying that you need to have that field position initially . That is the difference for us at the moment we just don't have that field position.

Can't ever remember Kerr running that hard and straight for us, although he always had a good offload in him.
Had a good offload but one that backfired more often than it came off. But I don't think he ran hard last night. Did he bust any tackles? I didn't see it. He took advantage of a backpeddling Bulldogs defence.
