Steelers HM Notes (First Half):

• Remembering that Steelers HM are undefeated.... with this match and 2 more to go before finals.
• I hadnt realised how big #13 Halaapiapi Amone was for this age group.. huge advantage
• First try was just our little 7 in Brookfield probing and going himself.. nice 6-0 start.
• Next try was again Brookfield but getting it out to Morrison #3 the captain.. basically untouched, some poor bears defence.. unfortunately missed an easy kick, but 10-0 up.
• ok so our 3rd try.. Brookfield with a short kick that hits the defenders but they cant pick it up.. so Ollie picks it up instead and strolls over.. bit of a lame one but we will take it.. 14-0.
• Ref is giving the bears every decision to get them back into it.. the bears spread it wide and have basically a 4on3 or something going on out there.. it was too good for us.. 14-4.
• We hit straight back though.. the big #10 Mason Andrews crashing over right under the posts.. very soft.. and good for him to get 1 back as it was a strip on him that led to the bears try in the last set.. they twisted his arm behind him and it was very dubious but anyway.. 20-4...
• Larkin #14 in a nasty head clash taken off HIA.
• Another dubious call and the Bears attacking our line again.. their winger streaming for the corner in for all money, and ollie f***ing burton again, wraps him up and gets him over the sideline.. I noticed last match when he chased down Ah Kee, he gets beaten initially (like he looks sluggish).. but he gets to full speed in just a couple of steps... and has a knack for holding up tries.. obviously a very handy skill for a fullback to have...
• Half time.. ref having a word to both teams about the push and shove going on constantly. 20-4 up.

Bears dont wanna compete. Just gifted Macgregor. Could not have made it any easier for the centre than if he actually said take it 70m then put it under the posts.

Steelers HM Notes (Second Half):

• Mason Andrews #10 has the ball stolen for a 2nd time 1on1.. fmd..
• Thankfully as they spread it, MacGregor #4 gets into the defensive line to snatch an intercept and run 90m to score.. very deflating for the Bears.. wish he had of bought it in another 5-10m though.. goalkick hits the upright and out... 24-4.
• So Brookfield from about 35m out from his line has kicked what I assume is a 40-30 and we got the ball back.. so must be how it works in this grade.. pretty good effort from a little guy.
• We go on to get an easy try.. Humphries #6 to Macgregor #4.. strolls in untouched. 30-4... got a goalkick!
• Jordan Barlow #15 is an interesting runner.. sort of light weight forward who keeps stepping as he runs and dodging tackles.. I think I saw him do it 4x in a row at one point before finally the tackler got him. He definitely makes blokes miss.. not sure what his position is exactly though.
• Scofield #8 has a big game, one particular run was 15-20m post contact.. looks a lot like weatherall with his ponytail..
• Some of these refs are calls are diabloical.. he really wants the bears back in the match.. suppose its good defensive practice though.
• Couple of nice moments from the #9 Chapman too, darting runs and a big tackle.. literally as I write this Scofield breaks a tackle (again) and runs 30m and Chapman nearly scores...
• Meh more penalties let the bears to our line.. nice run from their 2nd rower.. carries a few over for a good bears try 30-10.

The ref was trying desperately to square the game up.. but given we were miles in front.. it was probably good to force a bit of resilience out of us.

I had Scofield as my M.O.M. today, very impressive stuff.. 2 big post-contact runs in particular were game changing.... Ollie I love also cause hes just classy.. you just back him to take his bombs and hold up ball carriers.. the defensive stuff.. noticed oppositions like to try target him with niggle also to get him off his game.. hes also doing a lot of our attack off the back of brookfield.. ball in 2 hands... exciting kid..

Yeah, he’s got a bit of C*nt about him does Burton (in a good way of course) ,the forwards can go underrated but their a big reason why the Steelers have won every game and have a great defensive record. They make teams have to work really hard or do something exceptional to score points.

Credit to Schofield/Andrew’s/Amone. That’s a great middle core

Yah I feel like the raw product I would have in front of Kirk, probably not Williams.. but Saifiti is lightning fast, big tough carries.. he just seems to always ruin it with something silly.. so its just a question of can we knock that out of him... edit: ofcourse he goes on to drop it cold off a 20m restart..

Also feel like as we come to the period where our juniors can get poached.. that we need to see which ones we lose in a few weeks time.. Williams could be one of them.

Steelers SG Ball Notes (First Half - 22-4 Up):

• Ref is giving us very little.. thankfully weve been able to defend this first 9mins.. not sure we have been out of our half... until finally we get a 7-tackle set from our 20m.. and literally bash our way down field, another nice run from #9 Phillips.. he and #13 have been my standouts so far in the middle.. getting to to Langdon #11 to crash over.. after all that defensive work.. we r the ones in front 6-0.
• The very next set... we get the ball back from our goalline.. Phillips to Reed to Heidke.. Heidke (the surgeon as I call him) disects the defensive line yet again... gets it back to Reed.. who gets it to Saifiti who is lightning and does the rest.. under the posts.. 3minutes after all that defence.. we are now 12-0 up.
• A series of things happened next.. Weatherall tried to play the ball too fast (fractionally), Reed threw a dud pass.. the ref is being ridiculous giving every call to the bears.. a few minutes of defence follows... almost every second play is called 6-again or a knock on against us if it comes loose from a bear.. eventually they spread it and strip us to go in, in the corner... 12-4.
• Bears attacking our line again.. 2nd time Borg has been trapped in-goal and smashed this time.. but off the short kick off, Kye Andrews #5 who only has a shot due to Kirks injury..wants it more and cleans it up and finally we have the ball back... I do wonder if this defence will come back to bite us later though. We end up going the length, Reed sending Langdon into a hole.. but the big unit drops it over the tryline.. then we get penalised after the ball comes out from a bear on the hitup.. fmd this ref is giving us nothing.
• fmd ref again.. DMeafou on report, might have a case to answer.. the defender drops to his knees right as hes tackling him.. maybe not really im not sure what he can do in that situation.. he was 3/4 thru the tackle already.
• And another penalty in front after a bear loses the ball.. im losing my mind.. even their own fans are asking the ref to just given tham a try instead. We defend yet another set and finally a penalty our way... I think a 6again also.. and we take full advantage.. big carries from DMeafou and Taufa.. and eventually 9>6>7>11 for Langdon to put a bit of individual skill in to beat his defenders and reach out and plant it down.. phew.. another great goalkick from reed 18-4.
• The Surgeon Heidke decides not to offload the drop-off and just runs it himself.. cuts them open yet again and we are out to the 40m line.. we got em running back now and Fitzy makes the most of it.. easy show and go and scores in the far corner.. 22-4... kick narrowly misses. Half Time.

Looks a good centre, size, pace, ball skill. Both Meafous impress me too. Reed growing on me. Like the way he takes the ball to the line as it opens up several options. Such as the Meafou try just then. Quality footy from both of them.

Steelers SG Ball Notes (Second Half 50-4 Win):

• Basically first set of the half, Reed has sliced through on their goalline for an easy try.. lovely way to set the tone.. 28-4.
• Few minutes later, a big bold run from Saifiti down the sideline.. does well to be tackle in the field.. Heidke a strong run off the back and then Reed with another simple show and go as he steps straight under the sticks with no hand on him.. Bears are broken i think, they are not defending the simple stuff at all any more. 34-4.
• Feels like some of the intensity of the game has come out, but Kye Andrews has dropped a contested bomb and the bears have managed to pick it up and go over in the corner.. 34-8.
• We got a ball back on their line.. and once again Reed with the simple footwork to score his 3rd.. Im not really sure what to say cause his 3 tries have been off the back of terrible defence.. but he was still good enough to make it count... 40-8.
• Following set and Reed has put DMeafou at full speed through with a shortball and under the sticks.. was borderline forward.. but the sort of pass that I see every other NRL team apart from us get away with each week... 46-8.
• I must say Borg is an integral part of this sides chances.. and hes solid and he chimes in the backline.. but he just of doesnt have any x-factor.. he just takes the pass and runs.. and if hes fast enough great.. if not.. he gets tackled.. its a bit of a let down after watching Ollie Burton for example.. but.. I still think he might well take TPH's spot in Flegg later this year.. im not sure about that.. but anyway we shall see.. im not sure hes a longterm prospect though is what im saying... but hes been good this last 2 years in SG Ball.
• fark Taufa on report for I suppose its a crusher, but the bloke really was running into him with his head, like it wasnt a deliberate action he could avoid.. certainly hope we dont lose a few of these blokes..
• now Tyrone Amone is on report, because he missed a tackle and the ref 'I think' is accusing him of an attempted shoulder charge or not wrapping his arm, because literally i dont think he came in contact with anyone... fmd this ref might end our season. Their hooker eventually darts in after all of this.. 46-14.
• Borg takes a lovely contested bomb to save us close to our tryline, and off the following set the ball comes free from the bears winger and were able to get a simple try thru Saifiti and Heidke.. um Reed isnt goalkicking, infact hes not on the field.. hope its just precautionary... Saifiti shanks the kick.. 50-14.
• Game over.. very nervous about all the blokes on report and Reed (who did come out to shake hands with all the players.. limping a little but i think just in a tired way), but we needed a good win and we got it against a mid-table team.. now with 2 weeks remaining, I think 1 more win and were in finals..

exactly.. he slices defences open at will.. there is something very precise about the timing and the lines he runs.. he just goes through one side and comes out the other...
