You have a good eye for talent then. My view of Tallis is I wish we had that type of enforcer now. In regards to his tantrum he threw in relation to the Broncos issue he got what he deserved and lost a bit of my admiration for him.Going back to 1990 to 1992. In the weekly team list in the Telegraph Mirror, I used to put an * sign next to the young players who I was very confident of becoming rep players. I would put + sign next to those who I thought might and a - sign next to the ones I thought were maybe's.
I had a mate who was also a very good judge of talent and we would often agree on things rugby league, the one who saw Sonny Bill at the World 7's and asked for the program to see what his name was and said he was going to be a mad centre. If I owned Saints I would have made him CEO, even though he was a Manly fan.
As soon as I saw Gordon Tallis play first grade I knew he was going to be really really good. Phil Gould who is regarded as one of the better judges of talent and played a major role in signing ARL contracts during the Super League war, referred to Tallis as a reserve or something along those lines, he was mostly coming off the bench at that stage. I couldn't believe Gould didn't see Tallis as a future great. If he did and offered him a big money ARL contract, we may have kept him. The same may have applied to Anthony Mundine and he too signed with Super League. As soon as I saw Mundine debut I said he was going to play reps.
