NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

Games ours. Not the thrashing I expected but they have a decent halves combo, Smith and Rodwell. We win again and will hold sec place but the Warriors are unstoppable and have to be white hot faves for the title.
Warriors first grade team will be in the finals, probably for at least the first 2 weeks. Mike Molo and Finau will come into the team. Ramsey will be back. Hopefully the lay off will give him an opportunity to hit the gym. Though I'm not sure having BMM, RFM, Allen and Fegai in for Liu, CST, Heidke, Moananui will make the team better.

If things pan out and we can iron out our problematic switching off them my expectations would be a Warriors v Dragons GF.

Watched their game today and they have depth. Tannah Boyd played 1st and played very well. Without him young Jett Cleary took his spot in the 7 and although they won against the Magpies they were not as smooth and rampant.

With 13 min to go they were cruising 22 zip ended up allowing 3 tries and won
22 - 14. Their coach wouldn't be doing handstands either.

NSW Cup Notes (28-18 Win):
  • More dominant than the scoreline indicates.. Roosters had a b***sh** try early to be up 6-0, and then we scored 28 unanswered points gradually over the match, with 2 late consolation tries for the rorters.. very dominant.. pack easily held their own against a fancy rival.
  • Up against Sandon Smith and Toby Rodwell as a halves partnership.. Ilias was pretty average, too slow as always, couple of his passes were put down by a rooster going for an intercept.. but it was enough.. Glover was good but not godly.. goalkicking was great again.
  • TPH had a rly good game.. hes found his feet recently and been a good stand-in for the speed Ramsey.. who will hopefully be back for finals..
  • Allan was solid, 1 good charge-over try, Heidke was magic as always, took a few contested bombs, catching over his head.. have to repeat myself yet again.. give him a contract and play him on the wing in 1st grade...
  • Feagai was back, and solid in his first game back... I suspect he will play in 1st next week instead of Sloan.. I get it.. he's safe and solid.. but probably not going to score the tries Sloan scores either.. this is the dilemma as always.
  • Liu went off in the 3rd minute (HIA I think) but came back thankfully and was solid all game, Tonga was good too.. just had 1 moment where we had the ball on their line and he threw it a defender and made a big scene.. and got penalised for it.. very dumb.. hope he learned from that.
  • Halangahu was average.. couple of his slow tractor runs.. NickT was energetic and fantastic as always, finally playing 2nd row which I pray means Flanno is going to actually play him there in 1st grade soon... did go off with a back injury though I think it was precautionary cause he wanted to stay on.... CST was good.. Hutcho was decent enough.
  • Up against the team running last next week.. definitely in with a shot this year now that Boyd/Martin r in first grade..

If Flanno were to be really bold, make a really big call, he could pick Heidke to play wing though I'm not too sure how it would work with the salary cap. He has speed to score tries, good under the high ball and isn't afraid to make a tackle.

He has to contract him first before he could play.. surely its coming.. would be nice if it was sooner though.. I dont think Flanno would be thinking like that though, hes more focussed on forwards and big backs.. but Charlie reminds me so much of guys like Bostock and Schiller.. quality ~19yr old outside backs... they came through as a likely centre or fullbacks.. but wing is an easier path into 1st grade.. so if theyre big enough, play em there.. .in charlies case I think he could easily come in and play ctr however.. just saying we do need to fill Sloans spot.. Flanno was pretty clear he was filthy about those first 2 tries he let in (as we all were).

Heidke does remind me a little of Robert Toia, not lightning quick but has similar movements and that fend + good in the air

Very strong and stout and never gets embarrassed in defence, seems obvious that he should be given an extension but we’ve seen that sort of thing before like you said Rev with Bostock who was a clear star in the making and we let dolphins get the jump on us

There’s maybe 2 or 3 young guys at centre in that age group who are better and not by much, just offer him that development contract for 26’ into top 30 2027 IMO

Pretty stark contrast if you watched Sandon smith today in Reggie’s vs when he played like prime Thurston on Anzac day

the difference? He wasn’t playing on the front foot for 80 mins

Makes me ponder how good LKT would look if he was on the front foot more often.
The games he’s looked the best are against teams who we’ve been able to gain a foothold against like the tigers/eels etc.

We didnt bash the roosters (in cup) today but we easily held our own.. Roosters had moments too... but Sandon was yes very quite.. apart from some moments late when the game was over, and goalkicking he is very good.. and Rodwell had a couple of moments also.. nothing to write home about though..

LKT did play some cup early season in a dominant cup team.. you could look to that to measure his effectiveness... but.. i reckon he wasnt going that well at the time.. nor early on in 1st grade... but... the key to judging talent (I think) is seeing that they are still developing.. i.e. that they havent plateaued.. and I reckon he is starting to look more like a first grader every week lately.. he seems to be adjusting to the speed and physicality.. and working out how to best create threats..thats a rly good sign.. he also however has Val Holmes outside him, and thats really important.. a real strike weapon at his disposal.. and im glad they are on the same side for that reason.

Its a little bit like Reed & Heidke, the 2 have played a lot together, Heidke runs great lines and Reed knows how to put him into the gap.. I dont love that the 2 of them are in different grades right now, but its kind of how it has to be for now.. unless one of our main 4 halves get injured.. I dont think we will be rushing Reed through.. but if Flegg drop out of finals contention.. maybe...

I don’t have a problem with Reed just playing the year out in cup personally, just develop at his own pace there (hopefully their competitive and don’t get spanked by 40 most weeks)

Kade just needs to add some weight on, has all the skill in the world but even in the NRL trial against the chooks you could see he was a child compared to grown men

Same with Buchanan, it doesn’t look as bad now but Toia threw him around like a toddler in that matchup

To be fair I liked what I saw from Buchanan in cup today but he’s still got a long way to go (fair enough he’s only 18 turning 19 this year)
