NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

SGI NSW Cup
Injuries have created some backline woes for the Dragons this season, but the silver lining is they’ve also created opportunities for players like Sione Finau and Nick Tsougranis.

Another player who could end up getting an opportunity is Hayden Buchanan — a 19-year-old centre, who is tipped for a bright future. Buchanan starred in the Dragons’ win on the weekend with two tries, two try assists, seven tackle busts and 191 running metres. He also made 14 tackles but had two misses.

The Hurstville product captained the Steelers’ SG Ball side last year and is a former Under 19s Origin representative. He’s quick, athletic and a powerful carrier of the ball so ticks a lot of boxes.
According to Rev the other 19 year-old centre Heidke is probably ahead of Buchanan. But for sure it'd be good if they both make it.

  • #1 is going really well. Surprising but only holding the spot for Ramsey who is hopefully back soon.
  • I understand #2 has to play for match fitness in case he's called up to the NRL but Lyric Craft-Te Moananui was going from strength to strength.
  • Nice to see #12 is back in the backrow.
  • I hope #16 remains in the 17.
  • Borg is back, for better or worse. So far he's been a bit of a poor mans Ben Rumble.
  • I don't know much about #5 but I just read about him in the Daily Telegraph. Seems someone the club has its eye on.
  • #2 is also a good athlete. Hopefully he can fix parts of him game other than running.
  • #13 playing lock? Interesting.

Jersey Flegg starts early today. Souffs are below us on the table. It's simply a must win game. Even though they are struggling, it's not such a bad thing as there have been and still are so many of them playing in NSW Cup. The final piece of the puzzle will be if Kade Reed gets a run in NSW Cup this year and if so, how he handles it.

I rate Lyric CT and Charlie Heidke over Hayden Buchanan. Watch various players closely every game and can assure you that performance is far from the norm. He is a trier, will give him that. Where do you source these player stats?

Jersey Flegg Notes (30-28 Win):
Sorry its so long but my god.. what a heart-attack of a game..
  • Borg back into fullback over Pring (long overdue imo), looks a lot bigger than previously.. like much bigger in the thighs in just a few months.
  • We bombed an early try opportunity.. and they went the length with a penalty for their first, sort of a 1on1 with the hookers.. with Borg in the line unable to really assist. 0-6.
  • Treweek takes a contested Reed bomb and goes over and its ruled a knock on.. cant take a trick... plus were getting penalised almost every set to get souths out of their end.. nfi what they are for.
  • Finally we get the ball and put a nice backline movement, Reed holding it up and getting a nice ball to Hammoud to Borg to Hodges who accelerates nicely at ctr, holding up his man and putting Nachar away.. Nachar puts it on the boot and it bounces perfectly away from the defender and into Borgs hands who is supporting 6-6.
  • Note that this is the first time ive seen Eden Hodges or Nachar in ages, ive been a fan of Hodges as a 5/8, massive boot.. I assume hes been injured and sort of missed his window, but great to see him back playing U21s.
  • Off a penalty we get to attack their line again.. massive speculator pass from Hammoud to Nachar, who had 1 defender to beat but sort of got caught in between trying to step his defender and bundled into touch.. think thats the 2nd one he has missed today sadly.. could cost us.
  • On the attack again, seeing this backline to the left over and over again and very dangerous, we get a repeat set dropping it in goal and then do it all over again.. this time Nachar goes in untouched in the corner, 10-6.
  • Borg has gone off here at the 28min mark, but he was literally the guy who just set up the try, he was running freely, so I have no idea whats happened.. hope its not a serious injury.. its his first game back and has been rly good =(
  • Treweek had a poor period here, knocked a ball on in attack.. then tried to make up for it with a 1on1 strip, but was judged to be too late and penalised and rabbits went the length.. got a repeat set and eventually get us under the sticks with a monster prop carrying blokes and twisting out of it.. was soft but a decent barge from the forward. 10-12.
  • Should have been half-time, but we sort of switched off and they go the length with a medium range kick that somehow they won the race too despite half a dozen dragon players being back.. Hodges seems to be the fullback but isn't there.. rly disappointing finish.. 10-18 Half Time.
  • So seems like Egan Hodges is fullback, right ctr is Treweek currently.. and thats where we go after half time.. Hodges to Treweek who runs into a big gap with surprising pace.. and managed to put Fagalilo away (had Nachar on outside also who bombed similar situations earlier), Fagalilo almost bombs it but managed to wrong foot his defender and get over 18-16.
  • Unfortunately Treweek found out at ctr this time.. just a bit slow and left a 2on1 for his winger Nachar.. not all Treweeks fault but hes a big boy and slow to move laterally.. 22-16.
  • Hodges put under immense pressure to get a pass away.. Hammoud does do this from time to time imo with hospital passes.. Hodges cops a huge hit in the ribs and I thought it must be broken... but he has stayed on for now....
  • 40-20 from Reed did it so easy.. so good at finding the ground and getting 4-5 bounces from it... super soft try off the back of it, Fagalilo with a short pass to Rubie who just carries 3 blokes for about 7m and puts it over under the sticks.. 22-22.. 19mins left.
  • Souths throw a few nice movements at us, and we bundle them into touch on both of our edges in successive sets..
  • 10mins in the bin for Souths player here who pushes us over as we play the ball in attack and then mouths off.. good one s0uffs. Off the back of it Rubie goes over again but is held up.. we get it back.. Hammoud runs with pace into the middle and scares a few defenders.. hands it to Rubie who this time easily goes over basically untouched with pace and a nice angle.. Rubie having a big finish to this game. 28-22. 10 to go.
  • Souths attacked us for a while.. again Treweek exposed @ctr, too slow to close the gap which got Nachar to briefly move in to fill it and they exposed him getting burnt on the outside.. its a bit disappointing tbh cause it was 3on3 out there.. 28-28. 4mins left.
  • We give away another penalty and they're attacking our line.. not cool.. omg huge runs we manage to hold up.. souths put up a bomb and the catcher had it in his hands literally to win the game.. and bobbles it.. saifiti had fallen over.. fmd.. the 7 tackle set though is enough for us to get to their 15m line.. 6again.. setting up for a field goal.. but they put on a sort of combination cannonball+hipdrop+crusher tackle on Alhazim.. who gets taken off.. but the penalty in front puts us up with a lead 30-28, the game clock is wrong doh.. still 3mins left.
  • And we lose the short drop-off yet again... Treweek the last one, Nachar this one.. and they almost go over too, Reed holds on to his jersey omg.. finally Hodges takes it in the in goal and omg they rule a dropout for Souths for gods sake.. Reed finds the ground again for about 6 rolls 45m out from the goal line.. what a guy..
  • Souths grubber on the last and its somehow ruled 6again for Souths.. how good.. omfg open goal line and the Souths winger just gets pushed out by Saifiti on the death, holy f***ing god.. I don't think ive ever seen a game where we did the bare minimum to win it.. Souths created plenty of opportunities late in the game with a man in the bin and we just managed to defend it... far out.. Don't think we can make the Top5 but an important win regardless, lot of changes in the team also.
  • Thought Reed had a good comeback after a tough week against the Roosters pack.. he finds the ground so often with his kicks, he has a real array of depths and trajectories.. lots of great passes to the backline into motion also... just.. got us home.
  • Saifiti is so rocks and diamonds its like hes mentally not switched on, cause in attack and defence he is such a weapon when he gets it right.. Nachar looked a bit small for me at this level..

Was not aware he is a Dragons jr, then why wasnt he skippering the Saints Ball side. You really rate him and appears the club does too and the U19 coach. Dont see it to be brutally honest. Both Craft -Te Moananui and Heide are more skillful, quicker, athletic and more powerful ball runners. Better tacklers too.

Got away with a narrow 2 point victory. 2 late tries the prop, Campbell Rubie, who I don't think I've heard of until now.
Hes been the standout prop at Flegg level, really come out of nowhere.. played 5 games of Steelers SG Ball in 2023.. turns 21 in October.. maybe a late bloomer.. im rly happy hes in the system.. Liu has the jump on him but the 2 r very similar.. Weatherall still not crushing it at Flegg level either.. but maybe 2yrs younger still?
Junior Saifiti what a tackle, Souths fullback should have ran himself but that’s a good win with the number of players out
I mean we bombed plenty also early on, but they had 3 tries they bombed late.. one in the air where the souths back had it in his hands and dropped it, one where Reed barely had his jersey and that one with an open line and somehow Saifiti just does enough.. and I mean just.. very lucky to come away with that one for sure.. and I imagine Souths lower grades sides are playing without plenty of players also like we are.

just starting the cup game now, Heidke appears injured, and Nick is either not playing any grade this week, or a possible late change in 1st grade?

We were five pts up on the Rabbits going into this, shudda won comfortably. Craft -Te Moananui was not listed, did he play today. If injured we missed his pace and skill. Seems to always have one leg heavily strapped.

Have often been critical of Buchanan hogging possession. In fact all centres that do this. Twice in last 5 mins he ignored his winger Craft-Te Moananui, who imho is a superior centre to wing.
