i think it showed today when our middles came off JDB, Guler and Toby we leaked points, souths making huge yardage around the middle, watched Sele and Stewart get caught at marker and PeterM went straight through, still adamant we need another strong prop to come in and keep the pressure on after our main middles come off..

Agreed, really disappointed with Sele. He should be leading our pack with the money he’s getting.

Ryan couchman head and shoulders better than Sele and Stewart when they were on

How goods Egan been in the trials though. Love to see it

Couple of observations from 1st Grade:
  • Love having players with good hands.. if it wasnt for blokes catching balls behind them (at full speed) or off their bootlaces.. we probably go close to losing tonight.. several of those tries came off great catches.. the alternative being we drop it.. and hand over possession.. or give up a potential intercept instead of a try.. Holmes, Finau and Reed all stood out in that regards.
  • I have been saying for 6 months that Finau was the 1st choice winger.. I dont understand why you would pick Sloan who has literally never played a full game on the wing.. CT maybe.. Lawson down the track... Allan is a ctr now.. and Rava is on his way out... its an obvious choice.. hes had 2yrs in cup hes had a good patient apprentiship, 12mths ago I felt he needed to up his work rate.. and he did that in 2024.. now hes fast, athletic and got good power.. what else do you want? You cant possibly mess with him & Holmes as a left edge partnership.. they are good to go. he is however off-contract.
  • Guler is exactly what we needed.. if we can just get rid of molo and get Klemmer, that gives us a punch of Guler, Klemmer, JDB with 2 Couchmans off the back.. were good to go.. we shouldnt be getting flogged up front anymore.. clearly sides can get a run on against us like in the 2nd half.. but I dont think we will get run over too often..
  • Cook is such a difference.. the way he will completely change direction if he doesnt like what he sees.. so good.. and to have Liddle to come on with fresh legs will be great too.
  • Both Couchies coming of age now.. theyve always been ok, but errors and just looked a little small.. but now they look like they belong.. but I think the best is if they could come on after the bigger boys have softened the opposition up... they are still 4-5 yrs from their peak.. lets hope hey..
  • Not too much else, Lawson has a huge ceiling, but I think he just needs regular footy to figure it all out, Tonga was solid.. hes probably first in line as backup, Sele I didnt rly even notice his impact.. I think hes in reserve grade also (if we get klemmer), Stewart I think needs a year in cup, but he needs to step up in it.. RFM i dont rly know if hes on my bench.. id rather RyanC.. Egan was rly good but tbf he was fresh legs against very tired defence.. Sloan looks very odd with that extra weight, looks like he has a tummy even though im sure he doesnt.. not rly sure what to make of him as a winger.. id rather him just work on being a better fullback.. I dunno... if hes gonna be a 1st grade winger, I would like him to really work on that hard for 80mins each week and learn the subtle differences.
  • As much as I have loved the 2 wins, reality is if the Dogs give it to us in Round 1, it all means very little.. but a lot to love.. and much happier seeing our combinations performing well intead of getting beaten up.. i did actually think the 2nd half today was good for us.. little bit of a reality check.

Bulldogs defence is outstanding, their attack is decent. All we can ask for in Round 1 is to compete and keep it relatively close.

Sloan who has literally never played a full game on the wing.
Didnt Hook put him there for a few games. He is the bulkiest he has ever been, so can now handle the flank. But may have to wait as surely Finau starts if fit and Flanno will want CT. Why Lawson down the track, Jo said same? Why cant he start now and can he handle centre. Suli has been terrific at centre, reckon he'd go just as well on his edge and move Luch to the middle. Just some personal ideas if we cant get another prop.

I don't think Glover will make top grade
I was impressed with his cameo today. Looked nippy. Should put pressure on Kyle or Lachlan if they dont form a strong partnership. I had our half outplaying our 5/8 today by some margin. Will check stats to confirm that.

Trust me, he’s tragic. We definitely don’t want to be forced to play him in the halves unless absolutely necessary.

Once LKT is fit he will play over Glover if required

Glover is literally just giving us 12mths of coverage.. hes tenacious and a good runner.. but I think this will be his last year.

Holy hell.. just saw Cassius Tia in the dogs trial.. the dude is a behometh.. how the hell has he been playing halfback in U21's.. surely hes not really gonna end up a halfback.. Woods will be the one they bring thru I suspect.. and move this bloke somewhere else.

I agree with this completely.

You echo what I have been saying for sometime now we are 1 big bodied prop short and we really need to fill that void

Good observations. I couldn't find a spot for Sloan at the moment. When you run your attacking structures you have to have faith that the last link in that movement will finish it off. Finau showed exactly that albeit against a weakened Rabbits backline. I couldn't say the same thing for Sloan. I really like Lawson he just needs to transition from his union mindset to league and he can shine.

What some are missing is how disciplined we have been in the 2 games , last week we lost the penalty count 4 - 7 this week we didn't give a penalty away. Little improvements like this is what you look for as a coach. Missed tackles have been the big improvement this season as well , 23 last week and only 19 yesterday another big tick.

Lastly completion rates again another area of big improvement last week 76% which is really not a pass to yesterday 84% so all the important stats are heading in the right direction. That's what you need to see and more importantly maintain on a consistent basis.

It is going to be an interesting round 1 clash against the Bulldogs who I rate as a top 8 team this season.

If we play like our first 35 mins, I see few teams beating us. You will agree jo, they were running like a well oiled machine. Most excited I have been since Widdops time with us.
That has been our issue for years now we have been a 60- 65 min competitive team. That has to improve to give us any chance of playing semi finals football this season. We need that 1 more big prop if we get him I'm confident we will be playing semi finals football.

That 1st half attacking was excellent in regards to the structures and we were fortunate that the passes stuck. Undoubtedly we can score points the issue will be can we score more than the opposition on a consistent basis. Time will tell.

I dont think we can beat the Bulldogs in round 1 based on what I have seen.
How much of a upgrade is Klemmer , from Molo or Lawrie ? Would or will he make that much difference if he plays or would you prefer Molo or Lawrie ........ For me I say we will get more out of Klemmer than the other 2 ............

On that performance with us having so much possession, I have Egan, RFM and Stewart starting in Ressies. Sele needs to lift, 20rm is very mediocre.

First round pack/bench if no Klemmer:
Guler
Toby
Su'a
Leilua
de Belin

Ryan
Sele
LPT
Lawrie for Sele if fit.

I am a bit of a loyal person, as an old coach, sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes not so good. If fit I personally would at the moment have Lawrie coming off the bench, not big bodied but he can run hard and straight and could make the advantage line against a tiring opposition pack after the softening up period. Be interesting to see what team the coach goes with for round 1
