Recruitment and Retention for 2023

Given a choice of bringing either Cleary or Hunt to the club based on their skillset and pay them S1.2 m. Cleary over Hunt for sure as he is worth it. Still that is far too much money for one player, plus a big chunk out of your cap.
That's what playmakers are on 1m plus a season

Maybe defending in the middle and on the edges is quite different. I wouldn't have thought so but his form for Queensland for a few years suggests there is nothing wrong with his defence at Origin level.
If you watch when he plays for Qld he's not left defending like a shag on a rock as the C defender. One team has a correct defensive structure one hasn't no prizes for guessing which team has the better defensive structures

I cannot see us being competitive until 2025 with our current roster. That means if Hunt re signs his last season will be 2025. I am convinced that we have a salary cap issue and this is impending our ability to recruit 2 decent front rowers that will help us be competitive by that year. If you re sign Hunt it cannot be for more than 900k a season which may free up some money to try and attract the players we need.
I'd offer him 800K for a 2 year extension and inform him he may play hooker for most of that time.

I know you said

It can't be more but it can be less. So how much less do you think they should offer?
As I said in another post if it is not a financial only decision for Hunt he will stay for the money I have mentioned if not he will finish his career elsewhere. If hw wants to stay then in reality to free up enough money to buy at least one prop we can't offer him more than 800k

Got it now he will never play hooker for us. Agree with the money and in saying that he most probably walks away. Knowing the Dragons lack of recruitment and retention they will probably offer him 900k plus to stay meaning we won't be able to buy a decent prop. Time will tell
And another highly respected player turned coach has been shown the door at the Dragons. Remember that tough old prop James Graham? Well he has been a coach/ advisor to our pathways players making that huge leap from juniors to grade. As I said in another post the club internally is in free-fall, the playing group split and because of financial mismanagement cannot purchase any players outside the current 30, our salary cap issues are starting to hit home now. These issues albeit internal have an effect on any clubs on field performance as you have all witnessed in the month of July. Look at Manly last night, that is a divided team. But don't fret 2025 will show us a glimmer of hope. How very sad the whole club has become. I won't be renewing my membership next season.
