Recruitment and Retention for 2023

Illusion

SGI Jersey Flegg
It is being reported this morning in the D. T. that Brodie Croft, who was blasted by many including me for being an ordinary playmaker actually knocked back our offer not the other way around. This is an ideal example of what I have been consistently saying that NOBODY wants to play for our club under the current management and coaching regimes. If true that Croft knocked us back then that surely should be setting off alarm bells in the corridors of power. Now can you imagine what decent players think of our club? Not much. It's going to be a very long season I'm afraid
If things don't change soon with the board , coaching , and who ever is making the calls , then I can see us phasing completely out , as the St George name , Illawarra name , is no enough to keep this once proud Club from falling .....

I think the club is making a nice profit. Enough to keep the board fat, dumb and happy. As long as that's the case, who cares about the NRL team? That seems to be the philosophy.

Knocked back by Brodie Croft? A blessing in disguise and a club scorned by players.
Don't look too much into it. He probably didn't want to be a placeholder and wasn't confident of doing well to be anymore than a placeholder.

Apparently the Dolphins are very happy with the progress of Jack Bostock. Apparently the Dragons didn't even make an offer for him.

St George Illawarra confirm interest in Kangaroos forward

The World Cup winner is set for a big upgrade on his next deal.

St George Illawarra have cash to splash and have circled a Queensland Maroons edge forward to kick-start their recruitment drive.

While he didn't play in the World Cup final, Jeremiah Nanai nabbed two tries in two games for Australia at the tournament, capping off a stellar breakout season after the back-rower crossed for 17 tries in 23 NRL games.

Can someone please please ring the board and tell them we need 2 big prop forwards not lightweight edge forwards if we are ever going to be competitive again

I agree. I rate Nanai but is that really the kind of player we need now? Though one thing I'd say he suits the Dragons in; It'd be a good race between him and Zac to see who the second fastest player in the team is after Sloan.

Nanai signs big new deal with North Queensland Cowboys

The Dragons, Titans and Raiders all came knocking but in the end Jeremiah Nanai will remain a Cowboy

Predictable but once again, this thing I keep banging on about! Where is all the money going? If the Dragons were offering this guy big money but didn't get him, who is that money going to? Once again, the coach went on the record to say that most of the journeyman, fringe NRL forwards he has recruited are on a minimum wage. His words! But still no word on how all the salary cap money is being spent!

My mate tells me that in the real footballing world nobody wants to play for us under the current coach and clubs culture. I have no reason to doubt him

The following big names going to make a call for next year and beyond imminently.
  • Mitchell Moses
  • Herbie Farnworth
  • Tom Flegler
  • David Fifita
  • Adam Doueihi
  • Spencer Leniu
  • Dominic Young
  • Jesse Ramien
The one thing they all have in common is that apparently the Dragons aren't in the race for their signature. Flegler, Fifita, Leniu are just what the Dragons need but no. Well have to stick with players the last and second last placed teams don't want anymore. At least until we get a new coach.

I don't think there is any doubt at all about what Jo Dragon says above.

Even though I'm trying to be optimistic, I have to be realistic and say nothing is going to improve until a new head coach takes over.

I have kept a few friendship's going and I wouldn't just bullshit and make things up. My understanding is that the majority of player manager's firstly have no connection with Griffin or rate him highly as a coach to develop their clients, they have at the moment no real link with any member of the SGI board, secondly they don't want their clients to be involved with the club until the coaching and cultural issues are addressed, and lastly until the club once again becomes competitive because although money is now an important part of being a professional player the opportunity to participate or even win a GF is still high on their agendas. This particular friend is still involved with a club.

Well there is some good news and some bad news, firstly the good Mbye has stated that he doesn't want the no. 6 jersey on a permanent basis because he knows what I know it's a tough position to play for the full 80 min and is a specialist position. So hopefully we will see a Hunt/Sullivan halves combination, but knowing how this coach thinks don't be surprised to see a Hunt/ Bird combination, still in saying that even those combinations are not rated in the top 8 spines.

As you have said many times, one way or another, I have fears for Sullivan trying to do palymaking behind a forward pack being dominated by the opposition.

You will note during the season even the best playmakers will struggle if their forwards are not consistently making the advantage line. Unfortunately for us we will be reliant on Musgrave stepping up big time to help Lawrie. I just have this gut feeling that the opposition will adjust their defensive structures to combat Lawrie's new running style which saw him consistently make 100m per game in the second half of last season. If that's the case then some others will have to step up including Woods who will always be in the top 17 under Griffin.

Musgrove and 2 other props. Molo and ....... Woods, Jaiyden Hunt or Murdoch-Masila. Even Lawrie is the best prop at the club but isn't going to bother anyone come Origin selection time.

In the first year, you could have blamed McGregor for the lack of talent in the forwards ready to step up to first grade. In the second year, half-half. Hook should have seen the juniors in the club weren't going to make it anytime soon or ever and recruited young players. In the 3rd year, now, it's all on Hook.
