Recruitment and Retention for 2026

Rorters messed up badly with DCE. His form has fallen off a cliff. Played a year too long already.
Roosters don't get many wrong, unfortunately. But this is a big one. But will probably only affect them for a year. I hope they signed him for 2 but I'd bet it's something like 1 year with a club option for a second.

Our lock/prop around the same age hasn't slowed down at all but this is a reminder that at his age, it can happen very suddenly.

I think for a big club with pulling power, you definitely err on the side short.. Hargreaves for example..

But I think in our case it was a gamble on the proviso we could pull one of those big name middles instead.. and im not sure we can...

If we keep Klemmer I think we are just ok.. problem is hes been playing so well lately, now he has other sides making him offers.. but hopefully we can keep him here for 1 more year while the couchies & stewart come on.. and at the same time we r obviously still chasing a marquee prop for 26/27 whever we can actually get them..

I believe there is cap for juniors as well. Roosters and Dogs just probably cheat it more systematically knowing the governing body doesn't have the resources, time or determination to investigate.

2. Players on the Development List have a **set payment amount ($85,000 in 2024)**.
This $85,000 per Development player is EXCLUDED from the main Top 30 salary cap.** This effectively acts like a small, separate pool for these developing/lower-grade players.

3. **Junior Representative Allowance ($650,000 per year):**
* This is the most significant mechanism supporting juniors.
* Clubs can spend **up to $650,000 per year** on payments to **eligible junior representative players** (generally players aged 17-20 before June 30 of the relevant year, meeting specific criteria like playing in the club's junior rep teams - SG Ball, Harold Matthews, Jersey Flegg - or being identified as a local junior).
* **This entire $650,000 is EXCLUDED from the main Top 30 salary cap.**
* It's used to sign and retain talented young players *before* they graduate to the Top 30 or Development List. It directly incentivizes clubs to invest in their junior pathways.

There's always a way to bend it.
Supplementary List and Train & Trial have a Cap, once you go over that it was added to Top 30 cap but now it's a fine equal to the amount you go over.

Clubs like Roosters and Dogs are happy to pay that.

More is spent on Juniors than just the cap that includes health insurance 1500 per player and we have 200 players.

Not many junor players are on 20k.
There is also living away from home allowance 15k.

Roosters spend around 500k on just their SGB squad.

Re. The JDB situation - as someone very wise once said, better to let them go a year early than a year late
It's always disappointing to see a club legend moved on but Dragons need to be ruthless. I hate to say it, but I think the club made the right decision.

Never really gave it much thought til Anderson mentioned it on the podcast but it really is a balancing act with the salary cap deciding who gets paid substantially

30 T30 players at a minimum pay of 145k is 4.35 mil which is 36.5% of the cap

Then divvying that up with Gutho/Sua/Luciano/Cook/Liddle/Val/Suli/Sloan/Sele all high to mid tier paid players and it leaves very little wiggle room for the rest

No wonder we’ve been trying to punt Lawrie/Ravalawa for so long. Salary far outweighs the production

Really emphasises how important it is to have the young juniors pushing through perform well, provides clubs with a massive advantage having good young players on minimum wage performing well above that value . Eg’ Penrith with Chrichton/Luai/Martin around 2020

let alone next year behind a better forward pack,
What better forward pack. No Jack, so immediately we are worse off. Other than the Couchies and Stewart who else do we have to make our pack stronger than this year. Kerr, what a laff. We need a pack leader, a marquee prop and have a snowball in hell chance of landing one.

I think I was most disappointed about JDB but I saw a comment on another thread yesterday. About it being better letting players go a year too early rather than keep them a year too long. Seeing the way DCE has struggled and continues to get worse, I'm coming around to the idea that letting JDB go was the right decision.

Ryles dont agree with you, nor do I. What we will most miss from Jack is his enormous productivity. Every week he busted his balls for the club and the jumper. We have no one that I can see will do that now, perhaps Toby Couchman, but is he as bullet proof as Jack, doubt it.

Yes we need a leader of the pack who shows the way in every game and I just cannot see the Couchies, Stewart and Kerr being that leader. We must sign that big powerful leader, no ifs or buts if we want to be more successful.

Fast backline and zippy halves all add to a much better team and outcomes. There are a few of these in the lower grades that could be good, but we need them sooner rather than later otherwise we keep saying every year the same things rather than saying we have what we have always wanted at long last and we are killing it.

We have hired Anderson to get these guys and retaining our good existing ones in all grades.

Yes, that is true and understandable Eric but we must get a younger, equivalent or preferably better version of JDB for the years ahead. THis is most important. We need leadership in the middle, a player with total commitment and dedication and a willingness to always do the hardwork.

It's not so simple, IMO. I think everyone still rates JDB highly. But it depends on a number of things other than how good he is now. Like how many young forwards the club needs to keep, how many it can have In the top 30, what other positions need to be bolstered. And the elephant in the room, how much longer can he maintain his current output.

If DCE was on the market now, I think he might have to pay a club to take him. Thurston was the same. Played a year too long.

I'd like to see older guys like Webster, Leikvoll promoted to come off our bench next season. Both are big units and look hungry for work. Time Jett Liu was given a crack at the top grade too. Instead of having guys chopping and changing like this year like to see some continuity with our benchies. Jake may also be a benchie regular, but doubts over Loko. Best thing for his development is another yr of Ressies.

Spot on DD. But players of Jacks calibre dont grow on trees. I have belief that Toby could be our man, but a little down the track, Hamish also. Time will tell. But like you say we need that leader for next season, a bloke that has proven himself at his club, someone built from the same mold as Jack. Pay overs if we have to.

Both Couchmans on the field and a year older, a bit bigger, stronger but just as fast. Same for Egan, Stewart, LPT. Su'A still playing well. Halangahu hopefully in the 17 somewhere. Even without JDB the pack will be much better next year.

Lets wait and see how not having Jacks leadership and inspiration will affect our pack before making those assumptions.
