Recruitment and Retention for 2026

I would have preferred to keep Klem as I thought he was one of our more reliable forwards last year and was good for another season but maybe super league were simply able to pay him more.

With Kerr he's definitely not here to break tackles or take the heavy hits. I've never thought he has the mongrel for that. But I do think he improved at the dolphins and I agree with some other posters he will excel when we get in the opposition half and the forwards are given the green light to offload and be more creative. Time will tell whether this turns out to be the case but let's not write him off after round 1. We are going to need him confident. It's that offload ability that got him into the QLD origin camp. I think the Parra game will be a good one for him.

As for JDB, yeah I trusted Flanagan's judgement on that one and I think he called it right. Fine balance between bringing through the young players and having experience and not everyone's going to agree and that's ok, it's part of the fun of the chat forum. In my opinion his leg speed was already starting to look ordinary last year and we were being massacred for line speed by most teams. Not all his fault but he was definitely one of the culprits.

As for Parra, hmmm. I was one of the posters on the other site who was more than happy to get Flanagan's experience over Ryles inexperience. And I still believe we got the right man in the end. I know there's a contingent of fans who want Flanagan gone and that's ok we're all entitled to our opinions but I reckon we will come good under him and I think there's progress across the club as a whole. I wish Ryles the best as I do all ex-Dragons stalwarts but I reckon over the next couple of years we will leave Parra for dead. The have been so reliant on Junior turning it on over the years. At 32 his most destructive passages of play are becoming fewer. And as a club they will find it difficult to replace that momentum.

As others have noted, it would be interesting to see how Hayden Buchanan handles the fullback role in NSW Cup. With Sloan currently the backup to Gutho, the coaching staff may be reluctant to experiment this early in the season. Still, it would be disappointing to lose Buchanan and watch him thrive as a fullback at another club.

He’s definitely not a fullback from what I’ve seen

Terrible aerially, very short and we have no idea how his ballplaying is or his organisation of defence

I think he’s just a specialist centre that can play both sides

if talking Buchanan i got the sense watching (albeit less games than others) that he performs a lot better on the left than the right.

I'm sure Buchanan played fullback at some point last year (cant recall what grade it was).. but it wasnt his skillset... its why im so hesitant of having him in the squad.... i.e. he doesn't have the fullback skillset.... he's way too small for a winger, so he can really only be a ctr.. but small centres dont exist in the modern game, can you think of any since Renauf who retired in 2001.. Hayden will have to be exceptional to make it.

I think I also blamed him for chewing up the ctr depth spot that I wanted Heidke to have.. but thats not his fault ofcourse.. Heidke looks amazing but if hes always injured, that doesnt help anyone.

And after saying all that.. im still keen to see Hayden get a game, even in 1st grade if Val is injured.. hes bulked up over the offseason, id like to see what he can do.. I dont mind Feagai either but prefer him on the wing.

Why would Buchanan play fullback in reserves when Feagai has done it in the past?

Is he all that small? I saw a pic on here of him standing next to Egan. He didn't look that small. A bit short for sure but solid AF.

I would like to see Buchanan given a run at fullback for NSW Cup. We all know Slone isn't the answer, so a bit of experimenting in NSW Cup would be good to see.

I agree with you about small centres.
Jamie Lyon was small for a centre.
Croker from Canberra was on the small side

Thats actually a seperate topic, i.e. just how small Egan is! The 2 of them are so incredibly short.... thats also why I thought Egan would not make it in 1sts.. but he proved me wrong, his work rate and heart are immense.. its made up for his size.. but its a huge natural disadvantage to overcome.

I mentioned that Buchanan bulked up over the off-season so thats why I want to see him get a shot to see how he handles it this year.. he is however still very small.. in a world where most modern centres are disgustingly large and powerful.
