Recruitment & Retention 2027

Just wondering anybody in the know if the Dragons has offered that magical $1 mill a year to Drinkwater? Got a feeling that a club like the Sharks will sneak in and sign him for less because of their chances of playing finals looking better than us. Remember AFB and what happened to him when we looked home and hosed to sign him?
Evidently his price has topped $1m a year David. Tigers just pulled the plug over this. But suckers us wont as we are more desperate. Seems Anderson and Flanagan have not read his defensive stats which as I have already said are in Sloan territory. We had a brilliant attacking custodian but with damaging defensive frailties, do we want another one. I guess it is a matter of weighing his pluses with his minuses and ask the question is he worth $1m?

Do we want another dud tackler as our last line of defense, no spring chicken either being a similar age to Gutho, isnt he?
You don't think Drinkwater's attacking ability is on another 3 levels higher than Sloans? Drinkwater does brilliant attacking stuff most games. Not last night but most games and often a few times a game. Sloan used to do it 2 or 3 times a season.

But personally I'd look to recruit two good, fast wingers and leave Gutho at fullback or moves Holmes to fullback for his last year and then look to promote Burton when he is 18, turning 19. ]

Drinkwater is a good fullback. Much better than Gutho, Sloan or Holmes but 1 million a year at this this stage career isn't great value for money. Unless it was for max 2 years or 3 years with an option in the clubs favour for the 3rd.

Yes i see your points RVH. The thing is, in my opinion, there are many of the current day full backs that appear to lack strong defense. Even Teddy Tedesco has his moments when his defense is not all there in some games. I do like to see a great attacking full back any day provided he can catch the bombs and set up plays. The full back I know is basically the last line of defense but if the other guys do their bit better in defense, the full back just needs to make sure he is there to cover just in case and do his best. Even a bigger full back would have a tough time stopping a rampaging bull close to the line.

Our attack has diminished and is unattractive and we need pace, skill and excitement which we have lacked for years. All of the backs that we have are not up to speed and we need at least one half to be mesmerising.

How many times did I say that about Sloan when most of you guys were giving him heaps of flack. He at least showed an effort then. I changed my mind about him when it became patently obvious that he feared putting his body on the line.

You are spot on David. We do and badly. So if Drinkwater can provide that and obviously our club thinks he can other wise they'd not have made an offer, then so be it.
Dont know whether Reed is mesmerizing, but he is by far the best #7 at this club.

It's rly good for us if Drinkwater struggles a bit.. changes the dynamics of the negotiation, gives us half a leg to stand on..... something....

My thoughts are that the club have identifying him as our target specifically because:
  1. Firstly.. we didn't get the young guns in Bula, Purdue, Koula anyway..
  2. Secondly.. Drinkwater is more of a playmaker than the other options (runners), so given we don't have very much of that coming from our halves.. at least in the short-term Scott is helping make a more balanced football side out of us, we can do something with him in our attacking line... he has real pace... and playmaking aside... he is still a real running threat of course.
  3. Thirdly he is high profile, so his signing + KK's and now we have a base to try and land a decent 7 for 2027...
Note 1: There are a few 20-22yr old kids out there which maybe we could break free, or honestly Fuller is older but would be cheap and 18mth contract only.. its not a bad option.. but for the 2nd and 3rd reasons above.. I think they really want Drinkwater specifically (of the available options).

Note 2: I don't 'think' Ollie Burton is coming into any of the equations above (in terms of us choosing an older fullback that wont block him).. Ollie is still 2-3yrs away at a minimum, and honestly he could easily play wing or ctr for a year or 2 anyway.. that might even end up his position yet.. a lot of gun young fullbacks end up in those positions.. either initially or for their entire careers...
