Round 2 v South Sydney Rabbitohs - Sat 3pm

Sorry I for one was happy when Illias signed on but at the moment the bloke has not come out of his shell as yet ....... The team needs to start winning games and if it's going to take him another 3 to four games to start controlling the team it may be too late for a finals berth ....... Anyway let's hope he comes good ...... But then again when your forwards are going backwards it's hard for him to control the game time will tell ........
💯 spot on. The poor kid broke his tibia. Now this is usual injury in our game. He was playing in the NSW Cup in April last year. So in my experience even though the physical side has healed the mental side may not have. So to have a go at a 24 yr old kid who hasn't played 1st grade for 11 months is not right in my view after 2 games, seriously? It will take time for our halves to gel, its a new combination, new club, new training regime, new structures. I was disappointed in our coach at that interview after the game, I gave him more credit than to come out and say that even though it may have been in the heat of the moment. In my view until we get another decent hardened experienced prop we will struggle especially against the teams who have top 8 aspirations. We could have the best halves in the competition but the common denominator of all this is if your not going forward consistently, making the advantage line and able to initiate quick play the balls it won't matter who are halves are they just won't have the time or room to get into field position to execute our attacking structures or play eyes up football. I for one say give the kid a break (no pun intended). Rant over

Exactly right, there are problems across the board that we need to fix as a team, and our leaders need to be the ones stepping up leading the way. People are way too quick to jump down the throats of the easiest to blame, a little bit of time and patience is required to give them a fair go.

I'd also like to reiterate some of my earlier points, everyone wrote us off all preseason that this year we werent going to be able to score any points without Hunt. Well we mightve lost both games but our attacking structures to our edges are looking the best they have across the park since 2018 and I for one am certainly enjoying watching this develop a hell of a lot more then the 4 hit ups and throw it to Hunt garbage we had for years, so points won't be our issue. Fix up some discipline, some grit in the middle and a bit of time with the experienced guys and I'm confident we can put forward a good year.

I noticed his partner in crime is really starting to cop it in Facebook groups now. Flanno calling Illias out publicly has a lot of people asking why Kyle has never been called out.

Personally I didn't think there was much in it. He hardly gave Illias a razz in public. I'd call it more like a nudge. But he has excuses. With a bit more help I think he can turn it around. I remember watching him at Souths when he first took over from Reynolds and thought he was a gun.

Game is much faster now. There are way more points being scored across the board. A team with good halves would have scored 10 tries on the edges against Souths reserve grade team. Sorry to be so negative but better than optimism where there is no cause for it at all. Team needs serious changes.

Agree in the end those 2 soft online tries cost us we didn't learn our lesson after their hooker dived over in the 1st half but more embarrassing was the Keppie try. Fatigue played a role . In attack well we scored 5 tries so those were structures not eyes up opportunistic tries the attack is coming along well. The defence needs work

One thing that can disrupt all the hard work in the off season, all the combinations, all your structures is to panic. It also affects the mentality of players and the team. As a coach you make voluntary changes if you believe that a player or players are out of form or struggling but you afford them the opportunity to respond by placing them on notice. A good coach won't panic and make decisions based upon public opinion. Obviously if we don't improve to rack up a win or 2 by round 6 then serious consideration would be given to make changes that the coach believes will make the team competitive.

Now every man and his dog has come out in other forums and social media stating next week at Kogarah we will not be competitive against the premiership favourites Melbourne, in fact a bloodbath is expected with the Storm piling on a minimum of 8 tries, I disagree.

I agree but I don't see making changes to a losing team "panicking". Especially when the reserve grade team is winning and playing well. Making changes in this situation looks like common sense, not panicking to me.

The measure of any good coach is to review the games, identify weak links in your structures, identify players out of form then address those issues identified with the individual players and the team. The reserves played ok against the reserves. I know the difference between having a blinder in ressies and stepping up to just being competitive in 1sts.

What the supporters don't know is that wholesale axing do nothing for the team or players morale.

As a coach you basically need to be a good communicator, build trust between you and the team, and most importantly to me anyway is have credibility. I could talk for 30 min to my team but if they didn't buy into what I was saying then that was a very big issue. So for me no axe wielding for the Storm game. Its what I as a coach consider our best 17 against the best in the competition. After that we see where we are at.

If I was selecting the 1sts next week this would be my team barring injuries:
1. Gutherson
2. Sloan
3. Feigai
4. Holmes
5. Tuipulotu
6. Flanagan
7. Illias
8. Klemmer
9. Cook
10. Guler
11. Su'a
12. Leilua
13. JDB
RESERVES
14. Liddle
15. Couchman
16. Stewart
17. RFM

I know a contentious no.3, and I liked the look of our ressies centres but im not throwing them into the deep end against the Storm. Let us see if I'm near the mark.

I think that will be the 17 selected pretty much, i think Mat grabs the centre spot, only thing i can see is Flano may bring in Sele and give Stewart a rest, yes we have the bye this week, highly doubtful but something to consider.

This will be the last time I respond regarding this game because all you offer is the exact same negative rubbish on repeat thats not even related to what I'm talking about, we already discussed the halves multiple times move on and stop forcing it into every response. The speed of play has absolutely nothing to do with the overall structure comparison that I made and if you've ever played the game, or at least applied some critical observation, you would be able to look at the big picture and notice the significant changes accross the park. All I was pointing out is that this is something I'm enjoying watch develop, nothing more. It doesnt happen overnight and it will take some time to evolve so if your only replies to every single positive comment or comparison is "but halves bad", then I have nothing else to add.

Seriously............... yep, it will all come together for your favourite player. Only have to wait a bit longer.

This is what I don't understand. Why isn't throwing Feagai in against the Storm, throwing him in the deep end? I would think someone who has a much better chance of swimming is a better option.

Feigai has 1st experience the ressies centres simply don't have that at the present time. I watch most ressies games and Buchanan and Lawson last week went ok against the ressies Souths centres, who were both themselves being rookies . I'm just talking from personal experience those players simply won't have the experience or skillset to match the Storms centres and can be detrimental to their personal development.

I think Feagai is a better centre than winger anyway. If he tackles much better. Less chance of him rushing in to make a tackle but missing this way. It's more of a question of making the tackle, not choosing wrongly when to come in or stay out, if you get me. But Buchanan might be better than Holmes and Suli next year.

Mat Feagai defending at centre makes my eyes bleed. I know there’s no other options really but god it’ll be a long day watching munster & Papenhuyzen go at him all game.

Fingers crossed suli can be fit to play

Flanno should be able to make him tackle. It's not like Dufty, Sloan or Ramsey being trampled. Feagai seems among the bigger backs.

Anyway, depending on how things go from now Flanno should build a new backline around Gutho and Holmes. And a pack around the Couchmans.

Why not try Corey Allan played at SOO level had a few games back now , could be just what we need ........

We dont know for certain yet that Suli wont be available in Round 4.. but if hes not then yeah there isnt an obvious choice.. which is crazy tbh but it is what it is.. any one of Allan, SFinau, Lawson, Feagai.. I couldnt really pick which one he will choose.. luckily with the bye, they will have the chance to atleast trial there at training... but none of them are specialists... could even throw Sua back and Egan into the 2nd row.. but I dont think he will do anything crazy.. esp not against the Storm.

In years gone by.. opposition halves usually test our outside backs ability to make decisions... and we get found wanting, but I dont feel like either edge has really faced that test in the 2 games so far.. the tries have not really been scored on edges... and we havent really had to defend our line for long periods.

I am not overly confident in our wingers either.. again yet to be tested... .. but I did notice the tackling efficiency in the back 5 last week was Gutho 6 Tackles (2 Missed - 75%), CT 1 Tackle (1 Missed - 50%), Sloan 4 Tackles (2 Missed - 50%), Val (11 Tackles, 0 Missed 100%), Suli (9 Tackles, 0 missed 100%), so im not sure the scenarios those tackles came in.. but 50% for both wingers... and im hoping Gutho will come good, I think hes struggling to adjust to his new role, maybe worrying too much about players.. not sure...
