I think you are right. His best position is probably as a hard running centre as he was for Cronulla. Instead he has tried to change himself into a second rower but it just isn't working. He has his moments but more forgettable than memorable.
In my personal opinion he can't match it with the best centres anymore. The move to backrow would have been my first option but he is playing at the moment like a 60 min bench player at the very best. I would suggest that this has a lot to do with contract negotiations. His defence is extremely worrying at the moment after 4 games he is missing 4.25 tackles a game which places him in the top 6 not a record that you want. I can't see him holding onto a starting 13 spot at the expense of Amone and company but once again just my views perhaps he will come out and have a blinder against souths time will tell

It's also possible an asteroid will hit and destroy civilization before Saturday night.
His defence is my biggest concern as well. He hasn't been making many metres but if his defence was up to scratch and one of the starting props (Lawrie) was making decent metres, he'd be worth keeping in for his attack, support play and utility value. If his defence was up top scratch.

Confirmed. Mbye to start at fullback and Sloan cut from the squad so I guess that means Mbye at fullback for the 80min. Bird to start at 5/8.

God help us. Is he just trying to prove signing Mbye wasn't pointless and unneeded?

If you want to do a live game chat today, please make the thread. To be honest, I'm not overly enthusiastic. I really meant it about looking forward to the NRLW game tomorrow but not so much this one.

This place has gone from bubbling optimism to impending doom within 3 weeks.
Only because we can obviously see what the coaching staff refuse to see that picking players out of position, picking players who are dissatisfied with contract negotiations is fraught with danger, and everyone can see this from the results to date. In regards to Bird I can confirm this he has been given until Friday to accept or refuse the offer, all other interested parties have now withdrawn their offers so the dragons have the only offer tabled $500,000. It has to end for the benefit not only of the club but himself and his fellow players and mates. His stats so far this year reflects what I have been saying, in the 4 games he has made only 97 tackles and missed 17 tackles, that is far too less and far too many. In saying this if you looked at his efforts from last year in the 22 games he played albeit in various positions he averaged only 17 tackles a game so far this season its 24 but that's because now he is in the pack until last week and again this weeks game. This year his ranking is 80th for tackles and believe it or not ranks him 4th best tackler in our current team, seriously? Believe this or not Lawrie averages 28 a game and there lies in the problem the opposing packs do not fear us at all and are rolling up the field easily without any hinderance, if the same happens tonight god help us.

This sums up the situation absolutely perfectly.

Here is an idea. Amone to fullback to rediscover his running game. Mbye to 5/8 where there is no reason he would especially suck as he does in fullback. Consider his weaknesses and strengths:
  • Slow for a fulback.
  • Good defender. Problem is given his speed, opposition players can run around him. Not the case when he is in the line at 5/8.
  • Good or relatively good kicking game. Something which is almost completely denied him at fullback.
  • Good or relatively good playmaker. Something which is almost completely denied him at fullback.
So why in gods name would the coach make him fullback? It exacerbates his weaknesses and denies him his strengths!

His ability to organise the defence from the back is a big deal for the coach. It doesn't make up for your points but it's something.

Ben Hunt has let the captaincy go to his head. Why did he take the short kick off last night? Is there any indication at all he is better than Lomax in doing that? Shortly after that he took a short drop out. The drop out worked out. It was a few cms over the 10m line. Why does Ben Hunt think he is better than Lomax doing short drop outs?
Ben Hunt and Lomax are part of the problem. They both want to singlehandedly score on every second touch of the ball and are screwing up more often than not.

That's a good question.
Both he and Lomax were good last night but both had forgettable moments. Lomax's no look pass was so utterly unnecessary as to be a joke.

Yep heard the coach say that and I did mention that in another post people do not really understand what the fullback needs to do in defence because it really doesn't show up on live tv coverage. He sees the whole playing field its up to him to organise and in some instances change the makeup of the defensive line and redirect the defence. Obviously the coach feels that Sloan is not ready to do that yet hence dropped to as he called it 2nd's.

That's a little bit harsh. As a captain you need to lead, show leadership qualities and sometimes you take too much responsibility, on occasion this can be done sub consciously. In this instance our captain is our chief playmaker therefore you would expect him to shoulder the majority of the on field calls and create attacking options on just about every set of attacking 6. This is the issue you have when you do not have a 2nd attacking option (Amone) therefore we look pedestrian and slow in attack and defence. If the coach believes he needs to be reigned in then that's where you have to have a personal chat with him so its very important you place trust in your captain and visa versa. Its not an easy gig by any means especially when the team is continually losing and we now have unfortunately exactly that, a culture of losing. I honestly believe I saw glimpses of positive actions last night, i.e. Lomax finally running the ball taking on the defence and being selective with his passing he is regaining his confidence. All it will take to turn this season around is a win to build confidence and perhaps some consistency. From an old coaches perspective the team appears to be fatigued which would mean to me that they were pushed too hard physically in the pre season hence the plan not to have as many trials as all the other teams, they may have overdone it, if so it will take time to replenish the physical side of the game. Time will tell but I am expecting another improved performance at home against the Knights which will be the tonic many in the team need right now. I really expect us to beat the Knights if what I saw last night continues.

Amone is playing to coaches instructions hence the timid start to the season in my view.
