That's a little bit harsh. As a captain you need to lead, show leadership qualities and sometimes you take too much responsibility, on occasion this can be done sub consciously. In this instance our captain is our chief playmaker therefore you would expect him to shoulder the majority of the on field calls and create attacking options on just about every set of attacking 6. This is the issue you have when you do not have a 2nd attacking option (Amone) therefore we look pedestrian and slow in attack and defence. If the coach believes he needs to be reigned in then that's where you have to have a personal chat with him so its very important you place trust in your captain and visa versa. Its not an easy gig by any means especially when the team is continually losing and we now have unfortunately exactly that, a culture of losing. I honestly believe I saw glimpses of positive actions last night, i.e. Lomax finally running the ball taking on the defence and being selective with his passing he is regaining his confidence. All it will take to turn this season around is a win to build confidence and perhaps some consistency. From an old coaches perspective the team appears to be fatigued which would mean to me that they were pushed too hard physically in the pre season hence the plan not to have as many trials as all the other teams, they may have overdone it, if so it will take time to replenish the physical side of the game. Time will tell but I am expecting another improved performance at home against the Knights which will be the tonic many in the team need right now. I really expect us to beat the Knights if what I saw last night continues.
I don't disagree but a captain must also know where and when to delegate and must also trust his teammates to do the things they specialise in.

Normally you are correct but it appears especially in the last 2 games that he has no confidence in those players hence he is trying hard to set an example and motivate them on the field. This team is not a happy team at the moment and playing that way.

Is Hunt, by trying to do too much himself, negatively affecting the rest of the team?

As a coach I expect my selected captain to lead by example. He is trying make up for the failings of others who should be ashamed of themselves for their inability to do their individual jobs. The team, our team, is not performing as a unit they dont look united, and those individuals not performing need to be dropped. If the captain was doing the wrong thing by the team as a coach the responsibility rests on you to address the issue and if need be drastic action which includes stripping a player of the captaincy should be taken but you will very rarely see that in today's game. I believe Hunt is doing his best under trying circumstances. Just my view.

You are definitely unavailable to coach? I never really considered it but now I read this, it seems absolutely, 100% correct.

I'm retired with a lot of silver hair well maybe not a lot. Coaching is a tough gig there is only 1 happy coach every season usually

Damn, that does make a lot of sense.

I don't expect it to happen but if Ben Hunt were stripped of captaincy, who is next in line? I know McCullough was last year but I think he's struggling to remain in first grade.

I can't see a natural leader in that team well no one I'd be walking up to and asking if they would like the job. Interesting to see who is cpt at SOO time if Hunt is picked

I reckon it would be de Belin but for other issues not related to rugby league.

Sims or de Belin but we are getting away from the issue.

Is Ben Hunt, by trying but failing to do everything by himself doing more harm than good or is he merely picking up the slack left by others not doing their job?

I think it's impossible to know. Only matters what the coach thinks. Being by far the highest paid player, Ben Hunt cops it no matter what when the team is going bad. Paul McGregor listening to Panthers employee Greg Alexander and picking Hunt on the bench or at hooker was utterly ridiculous. That much is certain. As for taking the dropout last night, I really don't know. I agree with you and jodragon. I suspect the truth is some common ground in the middle.

Answered and a big no from me.

thank god for Wests Tigers....................

15. St George Illawarra Dragons

Last week’s ranking: 14th (down one spot)
Anthony Griffin’s panicked selection shake-up has been disastrous for the Dragons. In the two games without young guns Sloan and Amone, they have lost 48-14 to the Eels and 24-12 against the Rabbitohs. In Round 5 they were beat by a South Sydney side missing Latrell Mitchell for most of the game and without star half Cody Walker firing. Dragons fans will be hoping Griffin returns to the side they had worked with in the off-season, otherwise they could slump to one win and five defeats coming up against the Knights on Sunday.

I expect an improvement and a win at home
