Recruitment and Retention for 2026

The only thing that is certain, the Parra fullback Flanno paved the way for them to sign is much better in 2026 and going forward.
Before we signed Gutho, Ryles already said he intended to play Iongi at fullback for Parra. He was talking of playing Gutho lock, which I think is a stupid idea. Gutho is better for us than Slone is. I would have given Lomax a run at fullback if I was coach.

Tell me what your take on the "theme" is?

My take on it is that besides Penrith, most of the teams with the most juniors in the top 30 are in the bottom 8 of the NRL market for the premiership or in the top 8 for the most loses market.
Yep, look at most of the teams with very low numbers like sharks/storm/raiders/roostsrs/broncos

Their all perennial finals teams who don’t confine themselves and have this weird ego about prioritising players that are ‘one of their own’

All recruit and develop from a young age incredibly well

Yes we need to be as good at stealing local juniors from other systems as some of these other teams are. I think we've improved in this area over the last few years however when the players are on the edge of the first team they tend to go back to market and we simply can't compete with the third party deals and other financial inducements on offer from the likes of Roosters and Storm. The third party system is an absolute shambles and massively favours the Roosters with their mega rich eastern suburbs fan base. So the reality is that like it or not it's the "one of our own" type players that are most likely to stick around for unders.

Those numbers don’t add up. The Broncos and Dolphins have only four local juniors between them, despite drawing from one of the largest junior bases in the country. With just two Brisbane clubs competing for that talent, versus nine in Sydney, they should be stacked with homegrown players. So where are all the Brisbane juniors going?

The amount of Brisbane raised players that get poached by other NRL clubs (Sydney clubs in particular) would surprise you

Broncos tend to keep the very good ones but because they have the largest catchment in the league. Other clubs come in and take good kids away like we did with Loko/Hutchinson

I can appreciate that, Mailroomsgi. However, given the Broncos, and to a lesser extent the Dolphins, have strong pathways with local players, and considering the cost and disruption involved in relocating, I would have expected their rosters to be predominantly local. Perhaps there’s something about living in Brisbane that influences recruitment in ways the data doesn’t fully explain.

KK is huge but he is a massive outlier ... we will return back to our standard recruitment ... we will look at Barnett and say nah we can do better and not do better and miss him.

plenty of rumours about people like that we have had a shot at and for whatever reason couldnt/didnt land because they dont fit in with a style of play that worked in 2016 or there was another line in the water looking for that bigger fish we dont land. Who have we potentially missed out on because we have tried unsuccessfully to get Bula across (as if Isaac Moses will do us a favour).

sigh ... incremental improvement is still improvement

disclaimer - this is just my deducation based on observation and listening to odd rumours here and there. Could be 100% wrong on this.

We know that winning the comp is every clubs aim each year. We also know that there are a few clubs that are perennial top 4-8. These clubs have good player drawing power because of these yearly successes and of course with the high standard coaches, administration and in some cases a third party system that would help reward players going to those clubs. These clubs have more chances of winning the comp and in consecutive years at that.

I cannot see the Dragons winning in consecutive years anymore, but I would be more than happy if we can have consecutive years in the top 8 and win at least another grand final.

Your guess is as good as mine, I guess. My guess is - intense competition, salary cap constraints, and the need for veteran leadership have forced changes in the roster composition for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. I think Brisbane still have Patrick Carrigan, Ezra Mam, Kotoni Staggs, Jordan Riki, Xavier Willison, Brendan Piakura, and Deine Mariner as ex juniors.
While the 2023 finals side was heavily reliant on juniors (14 out of 17), the 2025-2026 squads have seen a shift toward a mix of retained elite local talent (Haas, Carrigan) and key external signings (Hunt, Reynolds, others) to build a premiership-contending team.

They had a formidable roster in 2020 but in that year they were wooden spooners - their first wooden spoon.

Several talented Broncos juniors have moved to rival clubs, including the Dolphins, Titans, and Sydney-based teams, due to better opportunities.
