Roosters 3 is quite clever in running at Buchanan, to engage him.. he should never have been there, but Stewart was slow to get into position.. nonetheless.. there is a yawning gap outside Ravalawa, whether its team structure or what.. I mean tbf this is not an edge combination that would have trained together...

Simple answer is we got our numbers wrong.
Stewart job was to cover the decoy runner which he did, Roosters 3 the FB chimes in creating the overlap and did a good job of engaging Hayden.

3 options we need to slide earlier and better, FB needs to come into the line or FB job to get across and cover winger, that was our play and Rumble didn't get there.

Buchanan missed a couple of tackles on his opposite but all in all was good I thought.

Can't agree. He did his job, made one mistake, was constantly trying to get into the game but was given very little room to run. Their kick and chase was good on the second half. Rumble was coming out of the corner with Rorters players all around again and again.
I thought it was a solid game from all the young guns. Halangahu in particular had limited chances but bent the line when he ran. Egan, excellent defence and good leg speed. LPT and Latu are surely in contention for first grade now. Not in a couple of months but now. Reed deserves the hype. I don't consider Couchman's young guns pushing to get into first grade anymore. They have to be in.

One more thing, RFM is way, way better on an edge than in the middle. Is Luch under pressure to retain his spot? He probably should be. From Egan and RFM.

I know it was only a trial but I'm going with:
3. Gular
2. Gutho
1. Ryan Couchman

Gular kept hitting it up, getting post contact metres and doing a lot of defence. Gutho and Couchman won't surprise anyone I don't think.

Lets not get too over excited from 1 trial against an understrength roosters side where most of our guys played 30-50mins. Some of the takes online across social media is wild, pretty much ruling out players or indicating someone is in a set position (i'm guilty of it too). Need a body of work before we pass definite judgements.

As a collective I thought our attacking shape & lines were much better, our defence held up pretty well too. Promising signs.

Is the CS limited to only 17 players or could we have 28 like last night?

I think it's 28.

Rumble doesn't excite me at the moment
Yar I feel the same.. Ben has had a few years in lower grades where he has been rly electric though.. line breaks and setting up tries galore.. Ive been eagerly waiting for him to come through, especially with the lack of other outside backs pushing up in recent years (bar guys like bostock, schiller & gromek who we lost).

I wonder if Bens body has been getting bigger and a little slower (hes already tall, which is a big advantage), because he looks really sluggish to react, sluggish to accelerate.. he dropped the offload from i think it was suli.. and he seemed slow to respond to it... physically he looks a lot like gutherson tbh.. strapping lad... its also possible fullback isnt his final position.. maybe its ctr or wing... but it could also be that he was being cautious last night, or coming off an injury.. definitely not writing him off... but 'right now' I think Sloan has him well covered as fullback replacement.. Ben has to make his mark in the next 1-2yrs I feel, he is 21 or 22 already.

In terms of fullbacks behind BRumble... TPH youd have to assume wont come on and will keep the seat warm for Borg, who I think has been rly solid but hes not an excitement machine either.. hes just solid in his role.. decent sized body.. and you never know... he doesnt need to be a god.. he just needs to do his job.. be defensively solid etc.... behind him in U17s.. Ollie Burton looks great, but hes young.. and there was a dragons SG kid Justa mentioned who I think is out for the season, so thats really going to set his development back.

100% while they had some good players too, its a different game with names like the Cheese, Walker and Tedesco supporting those big forwards..

Nonethless, it feels a lot better discussing a solid win than the opposite! Shield is still a trial, still 28 players Id assume, its just that we are less likely to be bringing out big names off until 10 or 20mins to go.. well we will see.. tbh the whole concept is strange to me.. a shield from a trial game.. sort of discourages giving the kids a run..

Spot on, he didn't read the play and that is what we have been missing from an experienced fullback for sometime now. That was Sloan's archives heel. Dont get me wrong you can't stop every try however reading the oppositions attacking structures is an art and takes time. Hopefully young Rumble can learn by his mistake.

Tough gig pulling on a 1st grade jersey. My old coaches eyes would agree in what you said, he really should not have dropped that ball back inside, he called for it, was expecting it and dropped it cold. You can make mistakes in your journey to the top but those who don't usually jump you in the pecking order. I wasn't wrapped in his reading of the 2nd try, it was a good move by the Roosters but he hesitated and thats all it takes . I hope he learns from his mistakes

I thought Luch was a touch disappointing last night in a team that was under strength but maybe I was expecting too much so early on in the season.

Agree with you some social media accounts have the happy dragon in a phone box ordering GF tickets. We won't be in the GF this season. The thing that impressed me as an old coach was our defensive line speed and structures especially when Gutho, Cook and Holmes were on. That's not a gimme when you buy quality players from elsewhere it takes time and a great deal of effort to realign yourself with another teams structures. I thought they were tremendous in that area which indicates to me they have bought into the coach, his style and structures. Defence will win you more games more often than not. We missed 23 tackles last night, now that has to be the benchmark and on a consistent basis. That stat in defence makes you competitive in a game.

Irrespective of the quality, I loved the chat among the players. Obvs Gutho leading it but then guys like couchman & loko, leilua & flanno, JDB with other forwards. Great sign, communication is key.

I also liked Flanno & Illias playing both sides of the field & linking up together rather than solely being on one side. Another tactic that can help our attack.

The errors he had were more rustiness rather than poor decisions or laziness. He was a big component of our attack in the 1st half, I think it's a smart move playing through him as he can help with ball play & also has a strong running game. He's one of the players whose conditioning will improve through more gametime & match play imo.

I hope that you are right because when one song and given early ball on the edges against a defensive line either retreating or not set could garnish us many points this year. I must say he looked to be carrying a few extra kilos or alternatively didn't lose as much stomach muscle as say Lawrie has.

I would say during last season the communication on the field from the players was non existent especially in the last 4 rounds. Communication is an important ingredient in a successful team as long as it's constructive and from only those players chosen by the coach to do the talking such as your elected leadership team. In my day I had 2 players the cpt and also the vc one preferably in the backs one in the forwards may have changed since my day but worked quite well for me.

In regards to your 2nd point allowing your attacking structures to include having the 5/8 and 1/2 back linking is rare these days but the quality teams with the quality halves have made it an art which more times than not confuses the defence and leads to points. Good to see that we now have this in our attacking arsenal especially if we can pull it off.

I agree maybe oppositions are onto him lurking out wide , maybe something has to change where he receives the ball .......

I mentioned in another post, perhaps early ball especially if we are moving their defensive line back or not allowing them to set. This relies entirely on your bookends chewing the metres up the middle and getting a quick play the ball off the back of that momentum.

Something also some forum members won't like, and I haven't been a fan either, RFM was good. Egan was too.
Lurch can be damaging , and should be better last year same ........ If I was coach a scrum close to the line stick him at 5/8 and let him ball play from there ........
