Recruitment and Retention for 2023

The Roar named one "breakout player" for every club. Most were young players but no surprise the player they nominated for the Dragons was...

15. St George Illawarra Dragons

Nick Lui-Toso

An unknown prop hailing from the Northern Pride, this front-rower is going to be catching a few fans double-taking in 2023. Turning 27 midway through the season, Lui-Toso is a late bloomer, but it's better late than never. The Red V has a really underwhelming front-row rotation this season, meaning it only takes a few bad games through the middle for Anthony Griffin to call-up the journeyman.
Dragons front-row rotation:
  • Musgrove, 26, turning 27 in March.
  • Murdoch-Masila 31, turning 32 in February.
  • Woods 31, turning 32 in March
  • F. Molo 28, turning 29 in March
  • Lui Toso 26, turning 27 in May (a youngster of the pack!)
  • JDB 31, turning 32 in March
  • Lawrie, 25 and not 26 until October.
  • J. Hunt 24, turning 25 in July. (young enough but if he had severe problems with stamina when he was 23, why would we expect anything different when he's older?)
Last year St George had the oldest pack in the competition. I think this year, even though McGuire and Burgess have left, the pack is going to be still older vs the nearest rival.

Are Griffin and the recruitment-retention committee trying to sabotage the team for another 5 years???

At times last season, the slowness of the team overall was really easy to see. Well, I thought it was easy to see. Obviously Hook doesn't agree.

He might step up and be a real find but doubtful.

With a bunch of rejects posing as first grade props, the answer is yes. Josh Coric and the Couchman brothers need to be given first grade debuts this year. Chances are this may happen when this dud lot are jettisoned along with the coach mid year.

The recruitment for last season was head scratching but Griffin thought he could get another good year or two out of journeyman props no other club wanted. He was wrong so this year, he doubles down on that strategy. It's beyond baffling!

What about Sione guys.. not impressed? I can see him scoring tons of tries if we have someone running a slick back line for us. He is a flash finisher and looks capable of handling centre as well as wing.

I'm impressed by both! Thanks for sharing the videos. But remember it's just a highlights reel. Do you think if they were really good, Melbourne wouldn't ahve tried to keep them? Who are Melbourne's outside backs? Olam is good but not exactly Reg Gasnier. Who else? The hooker is Grant. Obviously he isn't going anywhere but who is the back up hooker for them now?

He must have a much larger blooper reel or he'd already be a first grader somewhere.
He has been in the Storm pathway for a while but found himself stuck behind Harry Grant. Felt that was a brickwall tp playing top grade so needed to leave to explore other options. The Dragons offer came and he jumped at it. Talk was the Storm wanted to keep both he and Sione. Haele is only on a T&T with us while Sione is on a DC, odd that.

Strage that.

Stuck behind Grant and Smith but I think Storm had a mini crisis a few games last year when Smith was injured or suspended and Grant was on rep duty. If he was close to as good as those highlights suggest, I think he would have been in.

Sione is the outside back, isn't he? I think he's only 19. Haele is in a position we are REALLY lacking in. At least for this year.

That's an easy one. He wasn't in the top 30 because he was behind Grant and Smith so wasn't available for first grade selection.
This may explain why Sione followed his brother out the Storm door.
I hope he came to us because we offered more money, not because Melbourne rated 5 outside backs above him.

Anyone heard of this guy. We have signed him. News to me.
Seems he must be only 19 or 20 so better than 90% of recent imports. At least that much can be said. What position does he play?

Pics of him on our website training. By his build I'd say in the halves. Hello FO we have our own next gen halves in Wallace and Herring. Why arent they backing them over imports.
