Recruitment and Retention for 2025

JAC on the move. Looks certain now. He can help us in an area we are desperately weak in for at least 2, probably 3 years.
If we sign him, all we need is a halfback and a prop. And need Sloan to pull his socks up much more consistently.

JAC Is a funny one, Flanno spoke about it directly essentially saying it was up to his management to come to the table and he wasn't our top priority. He's a proper hard arse with his negotiations which is exactly what we need right now. Happy if he does end up taking the pay cut and coming across (provided Flanno kicks him up the arse) but also don't think it's a big deal if he doesn't.

Agree 100% on all points!

Been some movement on the JAC front today though, Flanno making it clear there was a large value discrepency between what he and JACs manager thought his value was at.... others are confirming there is no chance he is coming anymore.

But if not us.. where is he gonna go.. hes already moved out of his place...

Maybe if the Dogs are picking up some of his salary for next year, that'll bring the two sides closer. Because exactly, where else is he going to go?

Well we can summise all we like and everyone is entitled to their opinions. November can't come quickly enough to ascertain player movements if any. My simplistic view is unless we strengthen our engine room with a big bodied go forward prop it really won't matter who is standing in the backline waiting for the leather to be thrown out wide we won't have a competitive top 8 team. I still hope that we have a decent chance to sneak into 8th place next season under the new coach and the rebuilding to continue. We badly need to shake our poor image within the RL community for our lack of discipline and poor culture which has restricted our ability to recruit and retain the necessary players.

Hope he can be recruited but more importantly, can't show desperation and overpay players. That strategy is a fast train to nowhere.

I agree with you but with JDB, the Couchmans, another few kgs heavier but just as fast and fit, and LPT, that just might be a very handy frontrow rotation.

Here's hoping but props don't usually come good until after 3 seasons of 1sts and not before they turn 25 - 27 yrs old in my experience

And that's totally fine but I'll choose to stick to the positive outlook based on how they speak about the club and are setting the example. If I was concerned about anyone it would be some of the other juniors that havent had similar opportunities starting to get impatient, similar to Tamale (ie Sione).
Be positive mate I use to be also but how can we be positive over the last 10 years of the same crap being dished out by this club and board ........ Wrong players being let go wrong players signed on ....... All I said previously was if true about the Couchman boys then the same crap continues ........ Well let's just hope we hear some good news soon with signings ........ I for one can see us slowly improving if they let the coach do his job ..........

Agree, and I also subscribe to the theory the the prop age is shifting down a little bit due to the increased speed of the game (i.e. less need for as many big bodies and more room for younger legs/agility), iirc Gus used to say props come of age between 27-28yrs of age.. but I think maybe 24-25 might be the new norm.. and I think the Couchies are atleast 1yr ahead of the norm.. they are the only kids I can recall coming through 'early' at Saints in a very long time.... Tonga is I think ahead of the curve also.. but hes still 1-2yrs of development behind the couchies, he could overtake them as an impact forward though with his size.. but he would have to dominate NSW Cup next year... i.e. its a long way to go.

Its extra challenging having '2' couchmans though.. its double the reward, double the risk if they dont come off in 1sts, and I suspect thats the issue around their salary/opportunity.. i.e. having 2 of them makes it really hard to fit them both in the top 17 at the same time.. esp if both are playing prop.. I do feel like 1 could be the 13 at some point, but I dont think Flanno will want to complicate their role yet.. I think Ryan struggled with errors when he was suddenly thrust into the 2nd row a few games back.. it was just 1 game but its a reminder that simplicity is probably wise for young kids. But we also have to keep an eye on Stewart and Latu in terms of potential 13's... I do not envy managing the development of all these young forwards.

I don't mind the mistakes, which to be sure, they did make too many of in the few chances they got. Faster game, harder hits, more subtle foul play, most new to first grade make more mistakes. What is important is that they showed they have all the skills to excel for a long time to come. Strong runners, footwork, can pass and JDB-like defenders.

As will I.

Exactly right and I'm also allowed to point out that bandwagoning apparent departures and it being another fuckup is absolutely ridiculous at at this point given there is literally zero reason to think that. You wanna doomsday and assume the worst in every scenario be my guest, but that's not a discussion, and there's a good reason people don't enjoy that constant negativity.

As I said 2 sides to a coin, they love the club and they most likely want to prove their worth like so many other. Sua did the same for months after being able to negotiate, played his heart out for the club, earned his origin spot and his pay packet. That was the same panic and yet there's no reason they can't do the same, happens all the time. At the end of the day you want players who want to be here and want to prove themselves to the club, that's the biggest factor in club culture. If they want to be here, and everything says they do, then they will stay here.

Side note; they were both speakers at the 'What Makes a Dragon' corporate event today, make of that what you will.

Lol i know right just kick us out of the comp. Not like there's any reason to be positive after finally seeing some change in the club as for the first time in a decade.. Would help the stress levels though haha.

100% the couchmen twins I'm worried about the least in leaving any time soon. Dragons fans demands for signings/re-signings etc. has been a bit over the top imo. I get it but also chill lol. Flanno has more of an idea about the salary cap than all fans put together.

Agree, I found the development of young forwards v young backs was completely different due to their roles and responsibilities on the field. I can always remember the forwards in banter having a go at the backs especially the wingers, so the big boxhead prop when being interviewed would say " For anyone watching the game for the first time dont worry about jumper numbers the wingers are the blokes with the clean jerseys ". If we could keep and develop the Couchman's it takes me back to the Fijian Toga brothers back in the early 70s, Inosi and Apasi who tragically died of tetanus after cutting his foot on a reef when he went back home in the off season in 1973. Both played 2nd row for us. Back then they had a cult following we need to have that again with the Couchman's if they are good enough to play 1sts.

The past is the past if you wanna keep focusing on that shit sure, or you can join us and actually enjoy seeing the first year with some positive change that we can get behind as supporters in that same 10 year period.

Oh and take note of mugs comment, very positive news.
Contract talks are in the advances stages.

Agree we are heading in the right direction let's hope that it's left to the coach to take us forwards and not the influence of the drop kicks we have on the board ....... Anyway let's wait and see It has to be better than what we have been dished up previously

I don't know. Yes, there are a lot of promising juniors but to be frank, that is Griffins doing. As far as recruitment goes, Flanno still goes for every journeyman reject that comes onto the market, like Griffin, McGregor and Price.

Re juniors who are transitioning to the top 30 squad, I know that Loko & Jacob have moved to the Gong. I think Finau is doing the same or has done so already. Previously it's felt like players based in Sydney were unwilling to move to the Gong but it looks to be changing with the younger generation.

This is a positive step in the right direction as majority of the training occurs at WIN & COE will be based in the Gong which means more access to better facilities & less travel time which can only help aide in recovery. It ties in with Flanno wanting to lift standards & more professionalism in the squad.

Well Flanno said Hunt would soon be reporting for off season training, presuming he gets extra time off because he is playing for the kangaroos…

Kyle has just bought an expensive new house and his contract is only for next year. So does Papa Flanno want Son of Flanno to play halfback next year and therefore wants to purge Hunt ?

All will be revealed in November !

PS—-I have a tip for the Melbourne Cup….Saint George ! But it probably won’t get in unless it wins the Lexus next Saturday.
