Recruitment and Retention for 2026

With the right people finally in key positions, the club has made enormous progress. We have strengthened our junior pathways, established proper professional structures, advanced major infrastructure projects like the high‑performance centre, and have now recruited a highly sort-after representative player. After years in the wilderness, I can see this club re‑establishing itself as one of the NRL’s most respected and competitive clubs.

Nearly all sources saying we have him for 5 years from 2027. Only source missing now is the official Dragons notification on their website.

What scares me is I still have AFB coming to us and then out of the deep blue sea, the Sharks nab him and we dropped our jaws but the Sharks jaws drew blood and while he stayed at the Warriors for another year, the Scum got him to take the bait.

I hope this is the new year announcement for us.
Souths are the only ones who can trump us this time Dave as the cooling off period is only for the current club to be able to make a counter offer. He’s apparently told them of his decision already after souths made an upgraded offer so I’ve heard.

Great. Now we have to get (or introduce from lower grades) a top flight center and fullback for the 2028 season. These two players must be available for us to talk to in the nov 1 2026 negotiation period. I wonder who Ando has in mind?

If we get these two positions right and one of our young halfbacks comes through, 2030 could be our premiership window.

Thanks Dave. It’s well done to the club then i really thought we missed another with Souths offering the same money. But are we in a cooling off period ? Or is that done and dusted.
As far as I have read we offered KK a 5 year term from 2027 for a figure of $5.5 million while the Eels I understand offered 4 years @ $5 million. The offer that Souths came back with was 4 years @ $950 thousand. KK has entered the 10 day cooling off period. I've read that it started on Christmas Eve but the masthead in the Sporting News below which was today's issue shows that he would start it from today?? I think that for Souths to retain KK, they would need to offer him in excess of $1.1 a year which I don't think they will.

What you say George is now all part of the revival of the Dragons now that the Administration has become more positive with guys like Peter Doust not being too involved nowadays and the unearthing of Tim Watsford, Daniel Anderson, bringing Ben Creagh into a more football management position out from the Board, putting Bruce Gordon as the name on the C of E, all of these are helping to raise the standards of the club, more sponsors like JAC Motors and so on.

Much better days ahead for the club and us as fans.

Agree 100%, Dave. I wasn’t sold on naming the CoE the Bruce Gordon Centre at first, but I’m prepared to give the club the benefit of the doubt now.

I dont want to believe it until its official...

It will be more $ than anyone expects I reckon.. it will seem a lot.... but its crucial we got him.. and a middle too.. its the first big domino.. but again dont want to get our hopes up lol.. AFB was done also...

It's good he can cover 2rf at a very high level too plus if Su'a leaves, we've still got an elite fwd in our team.

I think Dylan Coutts looks like a great prospect at second row or at centre. He looks to have a great running game. For anyone who hasn't watched his highlights package. Check this out. I think Rev said he was a 5/8 in his juniors. Maybe he could even be a good 5/8?

Leilua may as well start packing his bags but even without him, club has a logjam of second-rowers.

I think Coutts and Leilua will get opportunities in the middle this year.. Coutts is still young and on minimal wage, but Leilua I dont think will be here beyond 2026 given hes on big cash.. but im still expecting a huge improvement from him in his new trimmed form.. but I just cant see a 2nd row spot with us in 2027 no matter how good he goes... if he can make his mark as a prop.. well im all ears.. again though probably a reduced wage.

I can only guess his manager went to to Souths and said something like, "He wants to stay but in oder to stay, he needs $********* for * years. Souths said, "Sorry, can't do it." So he signed with us. Hope so anyway.

Yes, me too George. The people in charge are paid to make decisions and they have decided it would be the Bruce Gordon Centre. Everyone will get used to it. We have been waiting yonks for something like this C of E to come online - remembering when it was first proposed mid 2022 and a few months into 2026, it will be officially opened (I wonder by whom?). It will bring a big resurgence of Dragons footy fever back into the Wollongong and St George Districts and something to be proud of.

It will uplift the spirits of the players, fans, administrators, sponsors and the general public in my opinion.

Sometimes all it takes to start an influx of great signings is that one big name to say yes first

I think you’ll find retaining some players will be easier, Jayden Su’a and Keaon are very close mates. I’m sure when we’re in talks to extend Sua this year it will no doubt help that a close friend will join in ‘27
