2025 Round 1 team

This is the latest round 1 team according to News LTD. I think this is what Dragons hating writers want, not what will be.

DRAGONS

  1. Clint Gutherson
  2. Christian Tuipulotu
  3. Valentine Holmes
  4. Moses Suli
  5. Tyrell Sloan
  6. Kyle Flanagan
  7. Lachlan Ilias
  8. Hame Sele
  9. Damien Cook
  10. Jack de Belin
  11. Luciano Leilua
  12. Jaydn Su’A
  13. Tom Eisenhuth

  14. Jacob Liddle
  15. Toby Couchman
  16. Raymond Faitala-Mariner
  17. Blake Lawrie
How old would this team be?! I think we can say #17, 16, 14, 13, 11, 10, 9, 6, 3, 1 are all veterans and #12, 7, 4 have been around a while.

Unless he has already tried it, I don't see why Flanno hasn't been retraining #2 to play prop. In this 17, he might well be the heaviest. Frank Molo was the heaviest.
From an old coaching perspective if that is the team relying on Sele/JDB to run on as our bookends then I'm personally afraid that we won't be competitive in the engine room. 3 x 100m per pack to make a team competitive. Anyone going to nominate the 3? I can't not in this 17.

I'm not worried about the age for this year either. But if this is the team for a large part of the season, going to need a big influx of youth in the next 2 years. Ryan Couchman must be in the 17! Hopefully LKT, LPT, Stewart, Egan, Latu all see at least a bit of first grade this year. By a bit, I mean a few games.
We need youth in the pack, I'm sure this coach isn't going to watch our season fade away in the 1st 6 weeks without biting the bullet and blooding the required players that will make us competitive in the 2nd half of the season

Totally agree on reliance of JDB & Sele, also think we will be heavily relying on momentum out of the ruck (Cookie shifting into 13 to keep that going) and shifting to our edges. In saying that I do think Toby can be that third meter eater with consistent bigger minutes.

Something like: JDB 60min, Sele 45-50min (needs to stay fit but averaged 100m at 40+min), Toby 45-50min (averaged 90ish meters 40min)

Edit: Another thought does Michael Molo find a spot in place of his brother? He didnt see much last year but actually average of 90-100m in 40min games. Maybe a bit fitter under another Flanno preseason to rev him up instead of Lawrie.

You literally opened with 'How old is this team!?' and then listed 13 players, what imagination is required? One of those I now assume you didnt intend to list given you initally had no idea what my response was about, tried to insult me in the process and now your backtracking. If your not worried about age why keep complaining about it? We've got so many good juniors coming through in the next 2 seasons we're going to see a very nice period of development.
Agree our stocks are looking good if we can manage to keep the majority. There is no substitute for experience and it is most definitely needed to ensure our young rising stars are given every opportunity to learn their trades.

Momentum its a game changer but you first have to establish perhaps not dominance but at the very least competitiveness in the ruck. I hope young Tonga can step up to the plate this season and establish himself as a permanent bookend moving late into the 25 and early 26 seasons.

He runs hard, has good leg speed but lacks the size. Still we have to find 3 forwards who can consistently run that 100m. If we can we most certainly have the team experienced enough to edge us into the bottom of the top 8 and semi finals football

Tonga has the potential to be one of the best props in the game with his size and motor. Translating that into first grade is the unknown and takes time but if all goes well he could be our alpha bookend for a very long time to come (fingers crossed).

Agree, his cousin told me he was suffering from a niggling knee injury last season due to heavy impact. Hopefully he has fully recovered from that slight setback and our fitness/ performance team have worked on that area of his physice

Ah I assume thats why he had it strapped up for quite a while there then? Makes sense, hopefully something minor the team was able to fix up in the off-season, him and Stewart are the two I'm most excited to see debut. Been waiting for Hamish to get his chance, something about him just feels like he will be able to handle 1st grade really well, dunno why lol.

My experience is that niggling injuries early in your career can define the players especially mentally. Being a prop forward in 1sts inherently comes with the highened chance of being physically injured due to the high impact contact. To me I was always happy when one of my bookends were strapping free especially around the knee and ankle areas. Let us hope he can live up to the wraps and isn't hindered by that knee. As it has stopped many a player in the past from reaching their potential.

The worst outcome would be for the nightmare to continue where they are mediocre, beating a lot of the crap teams but no chance against the better teams. Missing out on the finals by a game or 2 so the coach does the same thing the last 3 have done and just make a few small changes.

Guler in, Molo out. Imo the most open spot is right wing. All other positions seem settled...

Personal preference is no Eisenhuth & RFM in top 17, Rava first shot at right wing. He has most upside as a winger atm imo.

Can't see anyone other then Sloan starting the season on the right wing (barring injury) tbh, particularly with Flanno always talking him up in recent interviews. Seems to be pretty set with this roaming second fullback idea in attack with Gutho and honestly I'd much rather keep developing Sloan's defence then dealing with Ravas. I do have a soft spot for watching the big fella barrelling over people on the side line but Sloan and Finau both offer so much more versatility across the park so I'd see Rava as the 3rd option behind them both, stranger things have happened though.

Yea hopefully only 1 of Tom or RFM in the starting 17 to kick off the season but that may depend on that potential other signing Mug mentioned while he works in the younger guys? Still hoping big Loko shines in the trials and gets a run early.

I'd be tempted to give Sione Finau first crack. We know what we have with Feagai & Rava but Finau is still an unknown. Good athlete who has done the hard yards as a winger in NSW cup with some great stats. Injury worries with Sloan & a new position too, happy for him to bide his time in NSW cup. Ditto with Lawson re experience in new position.

I think for the first time in his career, we don't really need to rush Sloan into our 1st grade team. We've got his spots covered unless Gutho gets injured.

Agree re Loko, the guy is a weapon. I think it was a NSW cup game last year where he was flatting the opposition with great tackles then giving it to them too. Was great fun to watch, we haven't had that fwd presence in a long time. Both Tom & RFM were training with top 17 in socials pics today.

I love Finau think he's outstanding, was super bummed for him when he copped that injury on debut, and you right with him and Lawson being the unknown. Will be interesting having these guys competing for that spot, should drive them all pretty hard in those first few weeks while positions settle.

Yea Loko is great fun to watch, even in that Aussie Schoolboys side he was carrying blokes with him and making some epic tackles. That big Alpha position is definitely there for him to grab with both hands over the next 2 seasons and make it his, hopefully for a very long time to come.

Ty still in rehab week by week situation.
He will have limited prep time for wing.
He would have to have to be a standout in the trials to be selected round 1 that’s if he plays in them.
Rava was wing until he injured his knee 2 weeks ago. Mat now on the wing.
Si has been getting a run at centre in cup squad.
